granted
so what's the deal... why no chat room? are you just against it, or has it been tried and failed? i really doubt it would take much away from posts people could read at their leisure. i don't know...don't really care, just curious. the main point for a chat room is that i will probably not post a reponse to this topic for a day or two, as i am unable to view this board at work. so when i am able to visit, i actually want to talk to people. not post, and wait a day or more to view responses to my questions, statements, opinions, etc.
Nienna
I would like a chat room too. I know it's been tossed around, but not sure what the outcome was.
TomCat
I'm not against chatrooms, just as long as you have an "ignore" option for when miscreants are bored and want to piss in yer wheaties.
Aralis
I think a chatroom would be a great thing to have! I don't go to any anymore cuz I can not find any decent ones to chat in! The one I did like doesn't exist anymore. I definitely think we should have one!! !
Kitten
We should register a channel on a semi-popular IRC server i think. speaking of which.... ill go check into that
Scary Guy
irc.thegleek.com The main network for #mephistos #cityclub #sillygoth #remixwars and #virtual_blood (not that that one gets used much ATM). I'm also trying to get more people in the gothic/industrial/EBM scene to have their networks on here. I also run a server on that network and am subsequently an IRCOP Then they could put some form of CGI/flash IRC client on the website here. torn asunder
(from troy)"DGN Chat?" Why there isn't one - Official Response The board was created (and continues to operate) under the idea that we want to encourage clam longer-form discussion, and well thought out ideas. Chat rooms tend not encourage that kind of discourse. All this work building the userbase , was done under this (as well as other) concepts. Its the Marshall McLuhan "The medium is the message"at work. The play-nice rules , make it such that DGN is associated with calm, generally flame-free discourse, open chat rooms are very difficult to properly manage in that way if not impossible. In addition, it is well known that chat rooms, when associated with message boards, quickly consume a large number of the potential ideas/posters in favor of the more lowest-common-denominator conversation chat room "style" on both the chat room and the board(s) that are associated with them. Every eyeball that is on a dgn "chat room" is one that isnt on the board. You can "chat" right on DGN nearly as fast (but not quite, by desgin) as on any chat system if you really feel the need. (PMs or on board) There are lots of other lesser reasons why there is no "Official DGN Chat room" but the above are the core reasons why we have not put up a chat room. As you might be able to tell a lot of thought has gone into this one over the 5+ years of "DGN's" existence (as well as the 10 month or so existence of the various incarnations of the pre-Spiral proto-Board era) Its a popular idea. One that we've almost implemented several times. But just as -zero taxes- might be a popular idea, but would be detrimental to the existence of a nation. As it stands now a DGN Chat room would be more of a liability than an asset for what we are trying to build. If you need to "chat" everyones PM / IM information is clearly visible in their profiles. Note the above is not "set in stone" but its, at least set in sandstone, for the time being. We've spent so much time thinking about this one its silly. granted
Having a chat room would kind of make amessage board usless now wouldn't it? :whistling <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i disagree. it is quite possible to do two things at once, ie chat and post. i can see there are good arguements both for and against. i had figured this had been discussed before, and i was just curious what the opinions were. Scary Guy
I've had a chat room/server up for a while and I don't see anyone flame. If they did I would quickly kic/ban or kill/kline them as needed. I think if people go in with the idea that it works the same way as the forum everyone will play nice. If they don't, I'm sure we have many users/mods who would make good ops in the channel and keep things civil. Actually let me tear Troy's responce appart, I haven't done that yet I don't think, and shreadding is fun. "The board was created (and continues to operate) under the idea that we want to encourage clam longer-form discussion, and well thought out ideas. Chat rooms tend not encourage that kind of discourse. All this work building the userbase , was done under this (as well as other) concepts. Its the Marshall McLuhan "The medium is the message"at work." You're saying you can't have this in a chat room? I sit back and think out my responces before i type them just as I do on this forum. It is group IM'ing or multiplayer notepad and the chaos of it can be fun sometimes. "The play-nice rules , make it such that DGN is associated with calm, generally flame-free discourse, open chat rooms are very difficult to properly manage in that way if not impossible." You can kick and ban users who cause problems, and furthermore add a policy of if that behavior continues in the chat room to ban them in the forum as well. "In addition, it is well known that chat rooms, when associated with message boards, quickly consume a large number of the potential ideas/posters in favor of the more lowest-common-denominator conversation chat room "style" on both the chat room and the board(s) that are associated with them. Every eyeball that is on a dgn "chat room" is one that isnt on the board." I think topics would still exist both places and DGN is still DGN, wherever it might be. How aobut "every eye on a dgn "chat room" is an eye that isn't in some other chat room? "You can "chat" right on DGN nearly as fast (but not quite, by desgin) as on any chat system if you really feel the need. (PMs or on board)" But it isn't instant, so your point is moot, and I also have to keep refreshing the page "There are lots of other lesser reasons why there is no "Official DGN Chat room" but the above are the core reasons why we have not put up a chat room." Name them, I can't destory them if I don't know what they are. "As you might be able to tell a lot of thought has gone into this one over the 5+ years of "DGN's" existence (as well as the 10 month or so existence of the various incarnations of the pre-Spiral proto-Board era) Its a popular idea. As it stands now a DGN Chat room would be more of a liability than an asset for what we are trying to build." As you see it, but there are enough users that want to use the chat who don't think so. If you don't want to chat in the chat room, you don't have to. "If you need to "chat" everyones PM / IM information is clearly visible in their profiles. Note the above is not "set in stone" but its, at least set in sandstone, for the time being. We've spent so much time thinking about this one its silly." PM's and IM's are not group chat (unless you drag everyone into some AOL/yahoo room or something). Finally I'd rather be hanging out in the #DGN channel than the #cityclub one. Its the Marshall McLuhan "The medium is the message"at work." You're saying you can't have this in a chat room? More or less. You can obviously have 'deep' conversations on IM just as you can have plenty of idle banter on a message board. However, the message board lends itself to a higher ratio of the deep side of Internet chatting. "You can "chat" right on DGN nearly as fast (but not quite, by desgin) as on any chat system if you really feel the need. Fierce Critter
Umm... As to this: The board was created (and continues to operate) under the idea that we want to encourage clam longer-form discussion, and well thought out ideas. The amount of 1-word or single-sentence replies on DGN has increased exponentially, seemingly since switching to IPB. Sometimes I wish there WAS an actual DGN chat to take some of that off-board. Soulrev
A chat room is a bad idea as it would be detrimental to all of our social lives.. You really think giving more crack to a crack addict is a good idea? Give us a chat room then ;P Just kidding.. I wouldn't mind seeing a chat room either, but I think we still need to do some growing (as a board, in numbers) before we see a chat room.. I think at this point it's too unpredictable if a chat room would make or break this board.

Jarodaka
Some good points have been brought up. I'd like to point out that there's nothing really stopping anyone from starting their own chat room (IRC channel or otherwise) and then happen to promote it only to DGNers. I think Troy would only ask that you make it clear it is not 'officially endorsed.' There's also the administrative issues associated with keeping a chat room experience consistent with the board and enforcing any rules. Perhaps it's better somebody made an unofficial DGN chat... Scary Guy
Already done. irc.thegleek.com #DGN Slav3_Kitten already made one on another network but he's hanging out in mine too. Channel stats for users #cityclub : 11 #sillygoth : 11 #DGN : 2 #Mephistos : 5 #Virtual_Blood : 1 :( Come on I know we can make #DGN the most active channel on the network!
