Odds are 33% that I can make it. I need to fly out the next day for Asia again. -
South Park, as always, shows it at its best.

I want to run for office in England! Could you imagine a discussion like this taking place on the floor of the senate? -
Great work!!! Love it. (And I scarcely ever say anything positive on this forum... )

I wish I had known. Such wretched people. They were supposed to be protesting the Laramie Project in Ann Arbor. I showed up to the counter-protest, but they were never there. The absolute worst of America. I sometimes wonder if they are deliberately playing villains in order to expose the idiocy of mainstream homophobes.

Badass Women Characters in Movies
st_masey replied to n0Mad's topic in Movies, Books, Art, TV, Gaming and Computers
I can see the pic. While I do like her for the first half of the film, I don't like how she devolves into being all domestic wifey with long hair at the end. What a disappointing change... -
American Women are Terrible Flirters
st_masey replied to StormKnight's topic in Relationships, Pets & Domestic Homelife
I think the idea behind the cheesy pickup lines is the same rationale behind ironic facial hair. Take something that is unfashionable and make it even worse as a joke. Once it because a joke, you know this person is one that doesn't take themselves too seriously. If they don't take themselves too seriously, they are easily approachable. If they are easily approachable, they can buy you a drink. -
American Women are Terrible Flirters

On the other hand... I'm sure most American men are so fucking overweight that they seldom inspire the inclination to flirt. I also question how this survey was conducted. An internet dating site? They probably just said this to drum up some business. -
American Women are Terrible Flirters

I've been to five very different countries and I must say, this is pretty much true. However, that said, there are two different ways of being terrible flirts. One would be that they are too scared to at all and another would be to say that they have the bravery, but no talent. After living in Korea for a year, I can safely say that Korean women are MUCH better than American women when it comes to the former, but much worse in the latter. Keep in mind though, I am very difficult to flirt with. Korean girls tend to use the "full on flattery" mode much like American guys do and I absolutely cannot stand flattery. -

I'm opposed to the simplistic idea that "badass" necessarily means "kicking ass". -
*winces* I attempt too many arguments on this forum. Usually my points kill threads, so I won't bother here. Suffice it to say, goth as we know it owes nearly everything to Bowie. He is one of the most creative people in the history of popular music. Sure, he has not done anything musically significant for the decades since Scary Monsters, but what he accomplished in the seventies is unrivaled, unprecedented, and in some ways, unsurpassed.

Post-punk can be a tricky genre because things as diverse as second-wave ska, no-wave, synthpop, and industrial can all fall under the label. Post-punk doesn't necessarily mean that the artists be merely a form of punk, it stipulates only that these are genres that came after punk fundamentally changed the way rock music was made in the early to mid-seventies. Therefore, non-punk bands can be used to claim an influence over post-punk ones. The artists themselves can testify to this. Bauhaus, largely influenced by David Bowie, arguably the very early Adam and the Ants (Glam). Siouxsie and the Banshees, have stated several times that they were influenced by Roxy Music (Glam). There's even a hint of Bow Wow Wow in Southern Death Cult. Really though, it all comes back to the Velvet Underground and Can, which are unclassifiable. The only major first wave goth act that I can think of that borrowed more from punk than from glam would be Killing Joke.

Oh, he is a douchebag. I think his unabashed desire for popularity, shock and his overall shallowness makes most goths feel guilty. "Oh my god, is that how others see me?", or, "Is that what I really am?" So he becomes a scapegoat for all the immaturity and silliness of the goth subculture. They place all their anxieties concerning their own personal issues with originality, substance and appearance onto him because he is first of all, popular, second of all, not a particularly authentic goth. Truly, I don't see what "real" goths do that Marilyn Manson and mallgoths don't. If this were simply a matter of artistic taste, that would be one thing. Sure, he makes sucky music. Can one really say that Cruxshadows are any better? And even if one does like the good goth music, isn't the antagonism against Marilyn Manson still more of a way to justify one's identity to oneself?

The goth's disdain for Marilyn Manson is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in the glass. This is by no means a defense of Manson, whom I previously mentioned my distaste. All contemporary aspects of the goth subculture are inherently fake and silly. This is alright if one maintains a self-conscious, tongue-in-cheek attitude about it... which makes it all the more glam. Most first-wave goth music is just phase of glam, not the other way around. Current electronic goth music is just a phase of disco, which is abyssmal. The goth's disdain for VNV Nation is the rage of Caliban NOT seeing his own face in the glass.

Great artist. Lousy song. Good words to live by.

Marilyn Manson IS goth, he is just terrible. Lots of goth things are terrible. It's just simply better than being a hipster.

David Bowie shows the full realization of what one man can do on this earth if he meets the right drag queens.
