  4. Imagine your favorite Tim Burton film and you’ll get a good idea of the visual atmosphere at Leipzig’s annual Wave-Gotik-Treffen, or Wave-Gothic Festival. Known for its history of as hotbed for classical music composers, the Saxon city now welcomes approximately 30,000 members of the Goth subculture to its cobbled streets, making it the largest such festival worldwide. Click here for a photo gallery of the Goths in Leipzig. Now in its 17th year, the Wave-Gothic Festival over the long Pentecost weekend featured an array of events from classical music performances and medieval fairs to dark electronic and rock band shows, and even a Victorian picnic. Attendees at the fest were as diverse as their choices of music, but what brings them together every year is the chance to be part of a Goth majority. For Anouschka van Manen, who traveled from Holland for the meet, being a Goth is about respect and acceptance into a group that society often rejects or misunderstands. “Goths are some of the nicest, most intelligent people you’ll meet,” she said. Gothic – or Gruffi as it’s widely known in German – fashion takes on many forms beyond wearing lots of black. Today the subculture has grown to include those donning Victorian-era and Japanese-inspired Visual Kei and Harajuku styles, which are often brightly coloured and comic-inspired creations. Felicitas Heckman and Andres Trujillo from the Ruhr Valley region in western Germany brought as many as six different outfits for the weekend. Both emphasised the importance of personal style to belong to the self-proclaimed elite of the Goth community. They preferred platform shoes, hair adorned with long neon springs and neo-Romantic ball gowns over the stereotypical black-clad Goths of yore. “We match all of our outfits and have day wear and evening wear,” said Trujillo. “We tend to dress more simply at night.” http://www.thelocal.de/society/20090602-19655.html http://www.thelocal.de/gallery/501/8/
  5. ...the list keeps growing.... The Classic Middle Name It only occurred to me in the early 1990s that "Wayne" was a popular middle name among a few of the most heinous murderers of our time, e.g., the clown John Wayne Gacy (who killed almost three dozen boys and young men in the late 1970s and buried most of them beneath the floorboards of his Des Plaines, Ill., home) and Elmer Wayne Henley (sentenced to six consecutive life terms in 1974 in Houston for his role, with ringleader Dean Allen Corll, in the murders of 27 young men). I began to publish periodic lists in 1996, and soon readers made sure I never missed a one that made the news. This is a mighty impressive (so to speak) group, and below is an alpha listing. But first, several disclaimers: (1) Theoretically, a few of these people are probably innocent (or, if not "innocent," then at least the charges have been dropped). At the first instant that I find out about such a person on my list, I wipe him off and publish a correction in the weekly News of the Weird column. But, rest easy: The vast majority of these men, no matter how much they protest, are in fact murderers. (2) I have been too unmotivated to update the list in other respects. Most notably, there should be more names (i.e., some have been withheld because they were mere "suspects," but many of those were subsequently arrested, not to mention convicted), and there should be more, well, dead people on the list, if you get my drift. (I have only designated the executions that I know about.) (3) My list is only of murderers (or those charged with murder). Manslaughter is not enough. Other violent crimes are not enough. And it's only of middle-name Waynes who have been in the news; I have not pored over penitentiary rosters to get the old-timer Waynes. (4) Before anyone asks me, I will answer: No, I have no idea whether the number of middle-named Wayne murderers is statistically significant. I suspect that aggressive-personality fathers during the 1950s and 1960s did in fact hopefully and disproportionately name their boys after that era's icon of ruggedness, John Wayne. Beyond that, I dare not venture. 13. you can read about his and see pics on the site... quote: At Puruchuco-Huaquerones, an Inca cemetery outside Lima, Peru, a mummy excavation is disturbing Inca spirits—at least according to local villagers. Just over 1,200 families dwell in Tupac Amaru, a shantytown alongside the site, and some blame archaeologists for the recent misfortune that has befallen the town, including the death of a young schoolboy. Digging up these spirits of the past will only harm the living, they argue. Though the chief archaeologist at the site, Guillermo "Willy" Cock, discounts these rumors (he thinks the deceased boy died of tuberculosis), some villagers remain unconvinced. Willy himself had a fierce cough for months after he began handling the mummies. And when National Geographic photographer Ira Block arrived back home in New York City after completing his assignment for the story, he too had a bacterial cough, which he treated with prescribed medication. Can this be a case of the notorious curse of the mummy—or just bad sanitation? People have been saying for ages that angry spirits arise from such excavations. The most famous example is the official opening of King Tut's tomb in 1923, after which the financier of the project, as well as some others associated with the discovery, died prematurely. But archaeologists excavating the Inca site in Peru believe the amount of water (60,000 gallons/260,000 liters) and waste dumped by villagers each day causes rampant bacteria to fester in the ground. Willy isn't spooked. "Not one of us is going to die because of these excavations. We may die because we don't use a mask and have contact with contaminated material." (The team members do use masks when they inspect the mummy bundles in the lab.) "My cough was from the bacteria associated with the mummy bundles and the soil at the site, which is highly contaminated. There's no sewage system in the town, so you can imagine what's in the soil." Whether it's a poor sewage system or angry spirits affecting those in Tupac Amaru, dedicated archaeologists will continue to seek answers to the extraordinary Inca past. —Christy Ullrich
  14. http://www.cahokiamounds.com/ quote from someone's travel log: Great Travel Moment While reading a book, I came across a story about“The Pyramids of Illinois.” I was not aware of any pyramids in the United States. This prompted me to go online and find as much information as I could. The pyramid is called the Cahokia Pyramid or Mounds. The pyramid is located in Collinsville, IL. I concluded this would be my next adventure. Arriving on site, I discovered this property to be hosted by a Center. The Center offers escorted tours or you can tour on your own, with a map of the area. I decided to go it on my own. As I walked toward a ten story pyramid, with three levels, I became exhilarated. The pyramid was made by the American Indians, some 15 hundred years ago. Imagine, Columbus wasn't even born. After arriving at the base of the pyramid, there are 150 steps to the top. The top of the pyramid is leveled; this is where the King's Temples were built. The knowledge that pyramids were built in the United States is amazing. This reality will remain with me. http://www.crystalinks.com/pyrnorthamerica.html
