Troy, I use a straight razor but here is the key, Disposable Blades with the corners rounded. Now I'm not saying you don't know how to shave, but in my experience most men don't. During that crucial time, my father kept an electric shaver in his car because he got 5 o'clock shadow at noon. So my mother who just raked the hair off her legs and pits with a bic, "Taught" me how to shave and drove me to sporting a goatee for years so that my chin wasn't infested with ingrown hairs. It took me years to figure it all out. Keep your mirror treated with Rain-X anti fog. Wet the hair and keep it wet with water for a minimum of 5 minutes. It softens the hair making it easier to cut. Oil, not cream, foam, soap or detergent. Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, shaving oil, hell even butter is better. Oils don't suck the oil from your shin or prevent you from seeing it. I use Shave Secret when I want to smell spicy, and Ceder oil when I want to smell woodsy and coconut when I don't want a scent. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it. Sure you get a smother shave but whats better a smooth shave now or red bumpy irritated skin later? Do not repeatedly shave over the same spot. TWICE MAX! Either give your face a few hours to recuperate or cut hairs you missed with small grooming scissors. Strop strop strop, I can not say strop enough. Every few strokes, STROP! You can strop any blade even those crappy multi blades with wire guards designed to destroy your face. Don't own a strop? Don't have a leather belt, or refuse to use it as a strop? Use your hand! If you run the blade backwards against the friction ridges at the base of your thumb, you will be stropping. Not only does it reduce the scratching, and improve the cutting, but it extends the life of your blade. But you probably should be using a disposable straight razor, and at less than $0.03 cents a blade you should consider a fresh blade every time. Do not put any alcohol based product on your face.
