Goth scene in Minneapolis?
industrial_girl_2000 replied to industrial_girl_2000's topic in Nightlife, Events & Concerts
Thank you both for your helpful replies!!! I'm printing this out right now. -
Hey all, not sure where to ask this, but.... I'm gonna be in Minneapolis next week and was wondering what the goth/industrial scene is like up there, or if anyone knows any decent clubs to go to. My friends & I are looking for something fun to do on a Saturday night! Thanks to all! Industrial Girl

What a great night that was! KMFDM kicked ass, but the best part of the evening was when I was buying a band souvenir and ran into SASHA who was selling the band merchandise, as well as Lucia. They were very gracious, spent time talking to the fans, autographing our tickets, and taking a picture with Raev. I was glad that my first time seeing them in concert was an experience like this. Bands are always so far away on stage and you never get to see them as just regular people. A shout out to all the other DGNers that were there last night as well.

Oblivion May 9th at The Leland!

Great job to everyone who performed! This was most definitely the BEST show yet! -
Great suggestion if you need a job! Here's another really cool volunteering thing: Some of my friends are volunteering for the upcoming Olympics in Vancouver 2010. If anyone has ever considered going to an Olympics, tickets to the smallest events could cost you thousands of dollars (!), and that is in addition to your travel/hotel/food costs. If you volunteer for a big event like this, you get free tix to some events, lots of freebies, free food, and are in the middle of the action with all the athletes from all over the world. Autographs/photos, anyone?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: here is a GREAT way to get into your fav. plays/concerts/sports events for FREE: Volunteering. Seriously! All the people who are ushers at places like Detroit Opera house, Fox Theater, etc. are ALL volunteers. They get to see most of these top shows for FREE while they are working as a volunteer. I would call the venue up directly & ask about volunteering, what kinds of positions are needed, & how you can get involved. You may not get your choice of show, but at least you get to see a show. This applies for sports events too. There are sports events that things like baseball camps with actual major league stars that show up to teach kids or whatever, especially in the summer. One of my friends did an event where she was assigned to one of the major league mascots (basically just tended to his needs throughout the day, like food, or helping him with the costume). It was EASY work, she got to hang out with a bunch of mascots from all the teams, met tons of people, and got tons of autographs & freebies for doing it. FYI - volunteering at the upcoming Motor City comic con at the Rock Financial this month will get you a free pass to get in as well. If you like Henry Ford Museum or Greenfield village, you may also be able to volunteer there as well, which more than likely will mean free passes for a future visit. I would also call art museums as well since they are privately funded & can use all the free help they can, especially in this economy. You can network & maybe even pick up a few good references that you can use for future jobs. It is a total win-win situation. Another bonus about volunteering: you often get free food if you are working a minimum of 3-4 hours.

That's why you get there when the park opens & walk to the farthest area of the park & ride those rides first. You can ride a ton of your fav rides without lines (or with very short lines) since everyone else is obsessed with the rollercoasters nearest to the entrance. Throughout the day, work your way back to the entrance, and when you are done, you don't have a long walk in order to leave to go home either. I do it this way every time I go to a theme park & it works great.

I'm a big fan of cerebral/cultural outings such as the DIA, Cranbrook, Detroit science center, MOCAD, and most recently the African History museum. Cranbrook's outdoor gardens are (almost) free to check out....last time I checked, it was a nominal charge of maybe $5 (?) to park for their gardens and you can walk the grounds all day long or have a picnic. It's awesome & gorgeous in the summer. One thing that is nice is that most city libraries have free tickets right now to many awesome cultural events so you can get in FREE. All you need is a library card and you can get a ticket for yourself and up to 3 friends to join you. And this is not limited to adults....for those of you with kids, you will find many free kid-friendly activities as well. For those of you who want a more physical pursuit, check out public ice skating at your local rink. Most rent skates and you should be able to skate for 2 hours for about $7 total (ticket + skate rental). It's a nice change from the summer heat. What about Kensington park? They have a beach and super long bike/walking path. Summer is a good time for a day trip to Cedar point with fellow DGNers. Load up the car with your peeps & pick up reduced-cost tix at your local grocery store. Detroit Electronic Music Festival (outdoors!) is May 23-25 this year. Day pass is $20. Motor City Comic Convention (www.motorcityconventions.com) is May 15-17 at the Rock Financial Showcase in Novi. Ann Arbor Art fair in July every year. Awesome indeed.

City and Necto no longer, for me.
industrial_girl_2000 replied to asphyxian_doll's topic in Nightlife, Events & Concerts
I can totally understand that. As someone who has always had breathing issues my whole life, I was delighted to find that many bars/clubs/restaurants in the US are adopting the no-smoking policy inside the building. They provide good/comfortable smoking areas outdoors for those who want to smoke. CC will always be near/dear to my heart, but I do realize that if I limit my exposure to the highly smoky atmosphere, it helps my breathing immensely. There are times when I wish they could just open the CC roof like a drawbridge & totally air out the space, LOL! Saturday night, I went to a club that was totally packed full of people, yet walked out without smelling like smoke. It was a mainstream type of club which isn't normally my thing, but the change of scenery definitely did me good. They had a very good ventilation system in there, but then again, that's what I would expect from a club of this caliber. This is not a club I could afford to go to every week ($25 cover), but thanks to a friend of mine who Promotes for them, my friends & I all got in for free so we were able to check it out. There ARE many things you can do in Detroit area that are smoke free (& way cheaper than the above $25 cover, that was just an example, LOL) & I discovered a lot of them last year when I was touring around Detroit metro. If you want ideas, feel free to PM me & I can share with you. Life has so many possibilities & beautiful things out there & you definitely don't have to restrict yourself to just ONE club in Detroit. I fully respect your decision to branch out like this. -
Who Here Is Single

Nothing wrong with you. I don't want kids now either, especially after my divorce happened 5 yrs ago. There is no way I would want to raise a child by myself, and I don't trust a man to stick around, so I just choose not to get pregnant. I give a lot of credit to the single parents out there, but it is not a lifestyle I would want for myself. The funny thing is that I could have been talked into having a baby when I was in my 20s. Now that I am almost 36, I really don't see how anyone could ever convince me to have a baby, especially in this crazy-ass world. Technically, this is the time my biological clock should be really ticking away (according to all the "experts"), but it isn't & that's fine. I don't get all ga-ga over human babies. Strangely, I get all ga-ga when someone gets a new pet and I LOVE going to see someone's new puppy, kitty, reptile, whatever. I LOVE animals/pets. They are so cute/sweet and I get all mushy around them. I have had my turtle for 19 yrs & my frog for 9 yrs. My pets are my "babies", plain & simple. IMHO, marriage isn't needed if you aren't planning to have kids anyway. Cool if you choose to get married regardless, but there shouldn't be any pressure if you decide to only live with a person for the rest of your life either. -

That's a very healthy attitude and one that I whole-heartedly support. -
<--- Word. I was trying to analyze for the last 4 months who I pissed off in order to get into the state I am in now. I figure I just stay home, save money, let some time pass, and don't worry about it too much. And that's where I'm at now. Whatever. I can't change it, so I am not going to try to fight it. Things could always be worse.

industrial_girl_2000 replied to SaGa's topic in Relationships, Pets & Domestic Homelife
Sorry to hear that. :( People can be so superficial & the single dating pool is brutal sometimes! I swear it is getting worse by the day. People are nuts. My single girlfriends & I keep running into the gamer guys who "claim" they want a girlfriend, but they spend the entire weekend playing World of Warcrack and you never hear from them. Ever. Forget "football widows"....."World of Warcraft Widows" are the new trend now. LOL! -
"OBLIVION" @ The Works , April 18th!
industrial_girl_2000 replied to Ivy_Cat's topic in Nightlife, Events & Concerts
Haylee Jane was truly awesome on stage.....AND a nice person OFF stage which made her even more gorgeous. Really enjoyed my evening at the Works. Since it was my first time there, I really didn't know what to expect. Maria had me socializing all night long, and thank goodness for 6" heels so I could look over the crowd and find people, LOL! I was very happy to see a ton of DGNers in attendance since I haven't seen you guys in a while. -

You can pick them up at the ticket booths that they have at Hart Plaza on the day you go. It's usually a long line, but it does move fairly quickly. -

Oblivion May 9th at The Leland!
industrial_girl_2000 replied to Ice Queen's topic in Nightlife, Events & Concerts
I will definitely be there that night, LOL. So far, I have been working with Oblivion in a "socializing" capacity, per Ivy Cat's request (I believe the words she used were "we need models to provide eye-candy...." LOL). I don't think I will be on stage any time soon because I don't have a lot of time to rehearse anything. Never enough hours in a day for me to do all the things I want to do.... -
Oh man, great thread! I love yoga. I do the Bikram style of yoga: www.bikramfh.com. It's done in a very hot room (105 degrees) to promote sweating & release toxins. People walk out of the class literally dripping. It's not the most popular style of yoga for this reason, but I find that the heat helps me to stretch better, and with less injury.
