  4. Here I thought it was Chernobyl trying to sucker me into something... *bolts*
  5. I know I am a bit different here. Wanted to be a cop for a while, before the reality that father may or may not come back alive from a patrol. If I have a family, I wouldn't want to burden them with that fear. An extension of this is one of the reasons I wasn't looking for something while I was in the service. I didn't want to leave a family grief-ridden over the fact I could come home in a metal casket. However, I discovered at a young age I wanted to be a doctor. Go with the strengths, which was strong sciences. So much of my life has been dedicated to this end, it is a majority of my pattern. Perhaps it is the last of the childhood optimism that I can do anything that keeps me going. I knew the work was going to be hard, and made an almost monastic life in pursuit of the goal. It wasn't that hard to be that dedicated; nothing/no one interfered with the work for a long time. (Those saying "ignore it and it will happen," about certain parts of my social life, *this* time of my life convinced me more than ever that that saying was trite and patronizing. The time period took up at least a decade of nothing in that aspect.) I had to watch my back, as the undergraduate level had a severe backstab factor among the pre-meds. One friend in the major I trusted, who is now a professor at Vanderbilt. I was set on being a cardiothoracic surgeon, the most soul-crushing, time-killing, merciless specialty of surgery. I didn't care, it was something I loved. Then the condition set in, that made it unsafe for me to work the 120+ hours a week that is required to train in the specialty. I fell in love with the operating room when I was a tech, and had to change to anesthesiology, another love I found along the way. There have been a few hiccups along the way. But I still made it. But I haven't completely grown up. "The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play." One of the reasons I need something active, and why sitting and talking can irritate me. I need to be doing something. Hence a little more clubbing than someone of my age would (considering most of my peers in high school have had families and a fairly sedentary life.) Simple, unwinding, and relatively safe (compared to doing things like sports car racing, etc.)
  6. Finally got to meet Onyx. My Pokemod collection is now complete.

  8. I have been looking for an excuse not to do it, hoping to find one. However, it has been more than disappointing locally. It's been depressing. I can't even get far enough to show worth, or they would sap me dry without any return of benefit. Guess the choice has been made before me. At least I will be comfortable.
  9. Had a "House moment" on another board: "Are you trained in surgery? No? Then quit your bulls*** consulting and let me see this abdomen." Don't start with the whole IM/medical student presentation of "This is a xx-year-old male with hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, etc..." Cut the to the frakking chase and tell me why the heck you are calling me at 2am. One line presentation, mental masturbators. One line! "We have an old guy with free air under the diaphram," or "We have a woman with a 8cm symptomatic aortic aneurysm on CT scan," is all I need to get moving with a bit of urgency. And I won't be annoyed at you for interrupting my dream of me on a tropical island a load of young, nubile, smart, scantily clad, open-minded women with a thing for me just as they were about ready to suggest some kinky fun on the beach. Save your oratory orgasms until I ask for details when I see you in the ER. Am I being a bit too cynical, or is it the fact I am getting into the "old man" range?
