  1. Remember, if you don't go out and support your local goth/industrial/etc... club nights they'll die off. Then they'll turn into sports bars, and do we really need more of those? So just to recap, here's a list of all the events that I know of in the S.E.MI. area that either have a Goth/Industrial focus or are friendly: -----REGULAR WEEKLY EVENTS----- Monday: Factory @ Necto in Ann Arbor Tuesday: NOTHING! Wednesday: We Don't Have to Dance at Small's in Hamtramck (is this still going on?) Thursday: NOTHING! Friday: NOTHING! Saturday: NOTHING! Sunday: NOTHING! -----SEMI-REGULAR (BI)MONTHLY WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE IT EVENTS---- Friday - Saturday: Quite often City Club has a Goth/Industrial night on one/both nights. They used to be strictly Goth/Industrial but now do mostly Techno/Emo evens. $5 if the front room is open, $10 if both rooms are open (may be more on non goth nights/special events.) 9:00-3:30 - 18+ Friday/Saturday/it floats around and pops up wherever the hell it wants 9PM-2AM Thirst Wave / Industrial is not Dead / She's Lost Control at Small's in Hamtramck. TW is alternative 80's, while IinD is more... well... industrial. $5-10ish 21+ -----MONTHLY EVENTS----- Every First Saturday: Asylum @ Villains Beastro (Canada) DJs @Raev, and Surge bring you the best in dark alternative music while surrounded by the cities most unique and interesting venue, with displays from local artists! No cover, but tips are always welcome. Music ranges from Goth, Industrial, Post-Punk, New Wave, Shoegaze, EBM, any anything else that strikes the mood - ranging from classics to brand new releases! 19+. 9pm to 2am. No cover ever. Walking distance to the Detroit-Windsor tunnel The Third Saturday (and occasional other days for special concerts): Something Cold @ The UFO Factory: Minimalist European coldwave mixed with some old-school EBM and Industrial. Every Last Saturday: Happy Endings at Eastern Palace: Mostly New Wave / Alternative with a Goth / EBM track thrown in thrown here and there. The Halloween event is very fun and generally more our style of music. Food is a bit pricey but otherwise a great venue, especially if you like a tiki island theme. Also completely free. 10PM-2AM 21+ Every full moon: Full Moon Party at The Black Salt Bar 9PM - 1AM 21+ no cover. -----OTHER EVENTS TO CHECK OUT----- @PlasticPassion_a2: (Not really a thing these days, but occasionally they will do a reunion.) It has been known to have nights with a dedicated EBM focus. Black Planet @ The High Dive 9PM - 2AM 21+ $5 cover. ....and a few others exist as well. I don't have a lot of info because I don't go all the time, I'm not on Failbook, and no one tells me shit! Further information can be found at: https://www.gothclubs.org/index.php?title=Michigan Outdated historical information can be found at: https://www.vamp.org/Gothic/clublist.html and https://websites.umich.edu/~mauraway/eventslist.html If anyone knows of any other (semi)regular events (or sees any outdated/incorrect information) please post about it and I will update this list. If we don't know then we don't go, and if we don't go... they die. Also if you want to see more goth related events you should consider starting up your own night somewhere too!
  2. Wow, had no idea you were going through all that. Yeah she can be a bit of a pain at times and I have no clue why. You'd think that the camera stole her soul or something. Anyway feel free to crop her out and post up the photos and post them up! Maybe next time we should do a group photo, and since she doesn't want to be in it she can take the photo. As I said maybe next time she shouldn't sit in the middle of the group either, and the fact that she's in a public place with zero expectation of privacy should be noted as well. Basically the only thing keeping her face off anywhere is the fact that most of us are nice people and tend to respect the wishes of others.
  3. You owe me nothing, and I don't agree with everything but I completely agree on that last part. Never said I wasn't scared of not existing. Although these days I take the stance of Woody Allan "It's not death I'm afraid of, it's that whole dying part that scares me." I'm a bit of a nihilist and often think "why bother" and that helps keep me lazy too. Yet I want to make everyone like me :/ Anyway, always try the nice approach first. If that doesn't work then I say bring out the asshole in you. I always like to use the "if he loves you then why would he send you to burn for all eternity" line. Also "if he knows everything why would he make it to where you question him so he sends you to hell?" is fun too. Those of course only work on the low hanging fruit but they do work. Planting seeds of doubt is what life is all about!
  4. I forgot about Columbine, and Backspace. Probably a whole range of others too.
  5. Well when you see religion as one of the most dangerous forces on the planet it's kind of hard to keep your mouth shut, to remain silent about it, to "live and let live" because even though the moderates might not care much, with numbers they also don't care if you're at best converted, or at worst killed. Even those who might be against it may remain silent for fear of being singled out themselves. There are plenty of examples of this too. Even the joke religion of the Subgenius jokes about being split between turning all the pinks into slaves or killing them. The Subgenius have fanatics too, the people who actually drink the koolaid and take the shit seriously, or at least appear to. The people the other people in the church deem crazy are called "Bobbies" and of the few I've met on IRC they exemplified Poe's Law perfectly. I have a theory that any belief system or group large enough will eventually use force to enforce their religion of peace, because what force is going to stop them? That's why I stopped doing that nonsense (although it was fun and most of the people are nice.) Power corrupts large groups too, especially when they feel justified in using that power. There is also the theory that different types of communication speak to different types of people. Ridicule can be an effective tool, especially when you get them heated and arguing their insane brand of bullshit and shoot it down with facts. Some have been deconverted that way although I do agree that it doesn't speak to everyone. There is also the theory that it's easier to deconvert the most vocal and adamant apologeticists as well because they have to constantly reinforce their belief to themselves as well as others (kind of like the gay homophobic politicians.) Where religion has really been dangerous is climate change denial, faith healers, and all the other pseudo-scientific bullshit that stems from it. So yeah, I'm just a little bit pissed off. I do think that by working together we can do more, but I'm still going to call them out on their bullshit when I see it. Me and my religious friends have a deal, we don't discuss it. Life seems to run pretty smoothly that way.
  6. She's the reason I made the post! I was wearing one of her shirts and Troy hadn't heard of her. I miss when her brother played at City too. I remember when he got fired for playing "too much techno." Oh how little did they know :(
  7. Well, the nice thing about an evening shift is if there's a club night you can go there after and unwind.
  8. I think we left around 12:40ish. Had a bunch of fun. Looking forward to the next time if my schedule is clear. It was good seeing old faces and meeting new ones.
  9. So I brought up Chiasm tonight and no one had heard of them. I thought I'd start a thread featuring local music. Note that not all the bands I list here are still together/in the state anymore. (Yes, that is my old casket in front!) I tried to find videos for Rouge Angel 7, Electrophile, and Enluften but came up with nothing. Also I tried to remember the names of some other old bands and came up with also nothing.
  10. Got a copy? Sounds like a fun read :D
  11. I suppose you guys use it how you want to, and I'll use it how I want to. I like the upvote idea and I wish there was a downvote option (although that would probably work out badly for me, I still don't care.) I don't think it should mean "I appreciate your post" because then I'd feel really unappreciated way more than I do . I also appreciate everyone who posts, even if I don't agree, and I don't want to hit that button every time someone does post, nor do I want an email notification every time someone sees my post. Really if you want to change its meaning stop calling it an upvote is the first thing that needs to be done. Although, if you really want to change its meaning you don't have to recode anything. All you need to do is edit the image file to something else, and maybe if you want it to say "thanks" or something then expand the bit of code that defines the image size. The heart is probably the same way with just a number overlaid on top of it (yep) so that could be easily changed (or just completely taken out) as well.
  12. E-mail works for phone notifications if you have it it linked to g-mail and that linked to your phone. I shut off e-mail as much as I could though. I remember the play nice rules here vs. the shitstorm that was the DCC. Each had their own advantages. I liked the honesty that was the DCC but some of the trolls on there made it feel like 4chan. I was (and aren't) very well liked because I was (and am) and opinionated asshole. Now that DCC is gone and P. C. Principal Failbook is here, it seems like this place has taken on the best traits of each of the two forums. Although FB came along and killed most of the activity here too it seems :( That and also the fact that DGN doesn't really have a club night anymore. If you want to get fresh bodies you have to go out and recruit more (Red Apple doesn't count either.) I still say this place could use a built in IRC chat though with saved logs we could read. In the end though people will use whatever they feel most comfortable with. I think the majority come here for the community rather than any features it may or may not have. EDIT: You can fix the link to the calendar on the Nightlife forum, or remove it. It just takes me back to that forum.
  13. As far as Hellraiser goes, my order goes 2, 1, then the rest. Everything after 4 was crap too and even that kind of sucked for reasons I won't get into (plotholes? more like plotcraters.) I used to hang out on the Cenobite.com forums too a long time ago when +ripps was running things. I remember talking to him one time, found out he was from A2 and liked NIN but that's another story. I heard recently they're remaking Hellraiser, with Clive writing it and Doug reprising his roll as Pinhead. I do hope it comes to fruition and doesn't suck but I'm sure if they're involved it will get the justice it deserves.
  14. Yeah, I dig my heels, because even those who don't know any better are holding scientific progress and society back, and even damaging them. Religion has flown vans and planes into buildings. Fanatical fundamentalism is bad, and to go from moderate to fanatic in just about anything isn't that complicated, especially when you have religious texts and a community that prods you to do things you otherwise might not do. Even suicide bombings etc... I think religion is dangerous in pretty much every form that exists.
  15. I am an asshole, and I am proud! I cannot stand those who are willfully ignorant of the truth, or know the truth and lie to others for some sort of personal gain. Sometimes people listen to reason, and others are deaf to it. It is infuriating when there are financial or medical consequences to such beliefs too. Like the anti-vaccine movement, the homeopaths, the chiropractors, the faith-healers, etc.. This sums up how I feel quite well:
  16. I have distant family, some of them I love and some of them I couldn't care if they walked into traffic. Real family to me are those who make the time to actually hang out and are there for you. I may not get to see them often but I know I can call and they'll be there. It's a title that has to be earned though, and can vanish fairly easily. When you don't feel particularly close to anyone life is pretty hard. There are very few that "get me" completely. Those people should be treasured above all others.
  17. First off, it's what you are on the inside that counts. Second, corporate goth is a thing. http://www.waningmoon.com/corpgoth/ Although there is something to be said for blending in to survive. Personally I much prefer to express myself in my outward appearance. In the end, it should be whatever makes you most comfortable though.
  18. No one has ever had freedom, not really anyway. You didn't hear about bad things happening because they weren't that widely reported, but they still happened. Human trafficking for sex and slavery should have always been a concern. Although, studies have shown that violent crime is at a historic all time low now. http://time.com/3577026/crime-rates-drop-1970s/ It's good to be a balance of both free range and helicopter parent. Freedom but always with conditions and rules for safety. Until I was 5 I couldn't go out of eyesight (five houses away) and then after I could go to the end of the block. Other studies have shown that not letting your kids explore and get into things makes them more susceptible to germs and viruses. Not to mention it can also stunt their learning ability. Technology helps too. Give them a cellphone with GPS and keep track of them. Restrict what apps they can install because apps can track you as well and basically just mine you for data to sell to marketers / other corporations. Anyway, I suppose my point is parents are supposed to be protective yet lenient with freedom. It's a tough line to walk and most parents are idiots. I think the best parents are the ones scared they're going to screw it up, because those are the parents who try as hard as they can not to. On the bright side of the dark cloud that no one wants to talk or even think about. If the worst does happen and they do end up killing themselves most people can usually have more.
  19. To me the best horror has nothing to do with horror at all. As a skeptic I don't believe in a lot of things without evidence, so not much scares me but I suppose one has to be able to suspend their disbelief when watching certain things. One of my favorite movies where that is required is Event Horizon. John Dies at the End was just funny but also worth mentioning for the complete suspension of disbelief section. I also really like Alien since it is plausible that could happen one day in the future. Texas Chansaw is also a classic, requires no suspension of any disbelief. House of 1,000 Corpses was a nice tribute to that I thought. Motel Hell was cheesy but good. Anyway humans are the scariest monster because we actually exist and some humans are just evil as hell for no other reason than it amuses them. I should add American Psycho to this list too. Also there's the computer A.I. gone wrong section that I almost forgot about. Virus, Hardware, and Fortress are all prime examples of that specific type of horror. Zombie / vampire movies where the catalyst is a virus rather than something supernatural are great also. Also a mention to Tucker and Dale vs. The Evil, because that was funny as hell and the only suspension of disbelief required is that those kids are actually that dumb. Pretty sure I went way past the five movie limit, but I don't like to limit myself. #sorrynotsorry
  20. I agree, those are two completely different things. The first really isn't up for much of a debate because we can pinpoint the first time it was used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goth_subculture#Origins_and_development The second is completely subjective apparently. I've always said though that being gothic is having the ability to appreciate the darker things in life. If you can find the beauty in wilted flowers then you get it. Goth music to me is either that feeling put into song OR music which is dark in nature and gives you that feeling (Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is a prime example of that. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is another.) You might think that they're the same thing but they aren't because people misinterpret the meaning behind music all the time. Not to mention that the lyrics can be dark and the song can sound happy as hell, or vice versa. An example of the first is The Velvet Underground's "Who Loves the Sun?" which with different lyrics would be a pretty happy tune. Or The Cure's "Lullaby" which doesn't really sound that bad until you hear the lyrics. I don't know, maybe neither are particularly happy tunes taken as instrumentals. Most people would probably call this metal. To me it's the gothiest thing ever though. To me it's not a genre of music, it's bigger than that. I suppose for most it's more of a "I'll know it when I see it" sort of thing though and they don't dig too deep.
  21. Exactly this I think the idea of it originated from the movie "Caveman" which was a scientifically inaccurate comedy on early life. It was slightly more accurate than The Flintstones, slightly. I think that was the first time a three letter repeated word was used to represent sex "zug zug." Oh look, I found the full movie in the sidebar. Now what you probably meant was the act of screwing a man to death. There are a few examples of this. A boy and his dog is a great horrible post apocalyptic flick. I won't go into detail but basically everyone in the movie is horrible and deserves to die, and a few of them actually get to! Found this too, although it's out of order chronologically. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OutWithABang I also remember seeing this on USA Up All Night, it was pretty horrible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannibal_Women_in_the_Avocado_Jungle_of_Death I didn't see it listed in the above, so maybe I remembered it wrong but I'm pretty sure they wanted to use the men as breeding stock. I also can't believe Duckman didn't touch on this topic at least once.
  22. Oh I remember this argument, it was fun. It usually devolves into "Gregorian chants were the first goth music," followed by "cavemen banging sticks and rocks together was the first goth music." I also like to think Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper contributed quite a bit to the sound and style. Cooper's early stuff especially.
  23. *gets more ass hair* The moral of the story is "be more specific." I also like the short story "I wanted a bike so I prayed and one never came. Then I figured out that wasn't how prayer worked so I stole one and prayed for forgiveness." What I'm saying is you need to steal some hair
  24. The fuck? Wish I could say I knew him better but it's probably better that I didn't. Still, losing just about anyone from the scene tends to hurt and we were always on good terms as far as I knew. Any details on what happened or funeral arrangements for those who might like to attend? Sorry for the late reply, I don't always see everything.
