  3. By NICOLE PELLETIERE 3 hours ago Good Morning America Mom's Mock Santa Letter to Misbehaving Daughter Goes Viral (ABC News) Little Lydia Vincent was risking being on Santa's naughty list this year. So in an effort to correct her six-year-old's behavior, mom of two Kandi Sue Vincent decided to send a message. "She hasn't been very well behaved," said Vincent of Evansville, Indiana. "I saw someone on Facebook who wrote their child a letter from Santa. My husband and I thought it was a good idea so we decided to do it." Meet the Mom Behind Viral Letter to Daughter’s Stepmother After printing the letter on fancy paper, Vincent had her daughter read the note aloud: Dear Lydia,I am sending you this letter to let you know that as of right now you are on the NAUGHTY list. You have 10 days to straighten up and behave to try to get back on the NICE list. This means no more smacking your sister, or talking back to your parents, you also need to clean your room. I will be watching and getting reports from your parents, I had them give me access to the cameras in the house so I can keep a better watch. I’m watching, Santa Claus After the initial shock wore off, Lydia vowed to change her ways. "She was quiet at first and then she said, 'I have nine days to get on the nice list,'" Vincent told ABC News. Much to her surprise, Vincent's brother shared her Santa letter on Imgur.com. The post has received over 2 million views in just two days. "I put it up on Facebook, but I had no idea my brother shared it," she said. "I'm sure there are people out there that'll say I'm a horrible mother, but I just want Lydia to earn her Christmas. I'd rather do that than be the parent who cancels."

  5. How baby whale shark ended up in a pool Saga of tiny filter feeder includes its capture in the Maldives, demands that it be released, a brief dip in a resort pool, and freedom with the name 'Blue Flower' December 01, 2014 by Pete Thomas Baby whale shark being released in the Maldives; photo via Eco Islanders Maldives When a baby whale shark was discovered swimming in the open sea on Sunday in the Maldives, it was a big deal. According to a local news report, a whale shark that young had never been spotted in the region, and the find fueled speculation that whale sharks breed in the area. It was regarded as a “joyous occasion” by a local research center. However, when the 1 1/2-foot critter was captured and later shown to be swimming in a resort pool, it was distressing to conservation groups because whale sharks are threatened and protected, and do not belong in captivity. Baby whale shark enjoys dip in a resort pool; photo via Eco Islanders Maldives The docile filter-feeder whale shark was hand-captured by employees from Ganhei Island Resort, and originally said to have been kept only temporarily in holding tanks before it was released at the urging of conservationists. But later in the day, photos surfaced showing the whale shark in a saltwater pool at a neighboring island, swimming with resort guests. Alarm bells were sounded and phone calls were placed. Young snorkeler ponders a dip with baby whale shark; photo via Eco Islanders Maldives Whale sharks, which when all grown up are the world’s largest fish, migrate seasonally to the Maldives, a popular scuba and snorkeling destination. They’re extremely valuable as tourist attractions, and if babies are being born in the region, researchers say they should be left alone. “After the supposedly ‘successful release’ story we were startled when photos of the baby whale shark in a pool popped up on the Internet,” reads a Facebook post by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. “So investigations continued.” It turned out that instead of releasing the whale shark, an attempt by its captors was made to sell the animal to the owner of another resort on a neighboring island. However, that person demanded that the captors take the whale shark back to where it was caught, and set it free. Resort guest swims alongside baby whale shark; photo via Eco Islanders Maldives The whale shark was placed in the saltwater pool for only 10 minutes, before it was recaptured for its voyage back to where it was originally caught, but that was long enough for it to be photographed, and for those photos to be shared via social media. “He gave them money for petrol and urged them to release it outside Gangehi,” stated Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. “At 13:15 they started their engines, and considering the boat ride, it must have been released around 13:40.” The saga does, in fact, appear to have a happy ending. The baby whale shark was released after being cataloged in the Maldives database as WS217. Researchers will be able to identify the whale shark in future years, if it returns and is spotted. It was given the name NOOMAA, which in the Dhivehi language translates to blue flower. Eco Islanders Adventures, an environmental consulting and monitoring group, stated on Facebook that it was pleased with how things turned out after talking to one of the captors. Part of the post reads: “They had no bad intentions and guaranteed that they finally released it back where they found it… after a journey to Bodufulhudhoo and a dip in the pool in Mathiveri. “He said they [the captors] love the environment, and did not harm the baby.” It’s worth noting, perhaps, that the fishermen who captured NOOMAA had been out collecting floating chunks of trash, because they attract other species of sharks that could present a danger to swimmers. Whale sharks, which are found in tropical seas and can measure 40 feet, eat mostly plankton and pose no threat to humans. 6. A Surfer Accidentally Stepped On A Shark's Head -- And It Bit Him The Huffington Post | By Carla Herreria Posted: 11/03/2014 3:52 pm EST Updated: 11/03/2014 4:59 pm EST Always look before you leap, especially in potentially shark infested waters. That's the lesson Australian surfer Ryan Hunt learned last week. Last Wednesday, at Wallabi Point in New South Wales, the 20-year-old had just finished surfing a wave when he stepped off his surfboard into waist-deep water, "and then stood on a shark's head," he told Australia's The Today Show. At first, Hunt thought he had stepped on a rock, but then it latched onto his foot. When he tried to kick the shark away with his other foot, it bit down again then swam up between his legs. Hunt told Daily Mail Australia that he tried pushing the shark down with his hands and that it appeared to be 10 inches wide, although he couldn't tell what type of shark it was. His friends helped him out of the water and a local man on the beach helped him dress his wounds, according to reports. On Thursday, Hunt underwent surgery for deep cuts and puncture wounds to his left ankle and foot. “It could have been a lot worse," he told Nine News. "I got off pretty lucky, I mean I still have the foot.” The optimistic surfer even took to Instagram to share a graphic photo of his injury (below) and some new-found wisdom. "Apparently," he wrote, "sharks like feet." Hunt also told news reporters that he'll "definitely be surfing again as soon as I can." That's a step in the right direction.

Found the story before it is deleted or moved: Japan To Restart Nuclear Power Plant Under Fukushima Safety Rules | By MARI YAMAGUCHI Posted: 11/07/2014 9:37 am EST Updated: 11/07/2014 9:59 am EST TOKYO (AP) — A governor gave final approval Friday for a nuclear power plant to restart in southern Japan, the first to resume operations under new safety rules imposed in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi meltdowns caused by an earthquake and tsunami. Kagoshima Gov. Yuichiro Ito said the two reactors at the Sendai Nuclear Power Station would be restarted despite concerns among some local residents. "All things considered, I must say that we still need to rely on nuclear energy, and it is extremely important for us to steadily carry out the plan," he told a news conference hours after the prefectural assembly endorsed the restart. The Sendai reactors are expected to go back online early next year following on-site checks by regulators. Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority gave them passing grades in July under stricter safety requirements that factored in the lessons of the Fukushima meltdowns. At the Fukushima plant on Friday, three workers were injured, one seriously, when a steel railing fell from the top of a tank being constructed to store contaminated water, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said. The workers were not contaminated with any radiation, but one was unconscious and was airlifted to a hospital. He later regained consciousness, while the two others had less serious injuries. Massive amounts of contaminated water continue to leak from the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors, hampering the plant's decommissioning, which is expected to take decades. All 48 workable reactors in Japan have been off line for safety checks or repairs since the 2011 disaster, except for two that operated temporarily for about a year. The Sendai plant would be the first to restart under new safety rules imposed after the Fukushima crisis. The plant's host town, Satsumasendai, has already voted to restart the plant. The governor's endorsement completes the required process of local consent. Some residents were not convinced by the decision. At the prefectural assembly on Friday, the chairman's announcement of the yes vote was nearly inaudible as about 200 citizens in the audience shouted their opposition. They stood up, some holding "NO" signs, while others shouted "Protect residents' lives," and "Shame on you," according to the Kyodo News agency. They are particularly concerned about several active volcanos near the plant after a recent fatal volcanic explosion in northern Japan demonstrated that eruptions are virtually unpredictable. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been pushing to restart some of the 48 reactors, saying a prolonged shutdown will hurt the economy. Japan is heavily dependent on imported sources of energy. Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoichi Miyazawa, who visited Kagoshima to urge the governor to support the government's energy policy, applauded Friday's announcement. "Gaining local residents' understanding is very important," he said.
