completely follow your point, and pretty much agree. i think the key point is the "early age" comment, and "appropriate and significant" are good descriptions. however, what do you do when non-contact discipline has no effect? (honestly, what would you do? you can't just give up if non-contact punishment doesn't work, so what could a parent do?)i think one (no more than two) well-placed swat(s) on the butt would not be too extreme. more an attention-getter than a punishment, like "hey, i'm not f**kin around kid, pay attention!". and again, consequences need to be learned early, corporal punishment after they're grown reinforces the wrong idea. hope that's a little clearer!

strumming a little guitar & wondering if i'm gonna get a call tomorrow for some contract work tomorrow at my old company...

to be honest, i think a lot of the problems with today's kids stem from the lack of ability to utilize "corporal punishment" with children anymore. now, in no way am i saying parents should beat their kids, but damnit, a "time-out" is *not* going to get a kid's attention after a certain point. kids now, think their parents are a bunch of wimps they can run roughshod over, because there is never a punishment for their bad behavior. there is no healthy fear of authority anymore. i'm also not saying that every kid needs it, but i do think that, as bad behavior escalates, punishment should as well. of course, i have no idea where to draw the line on it, legally speaking... spanking? switches? belts? wait...i bet i'm turning some of you on now, aren't i!? and yes, i realize i don't have kids - i can still have an opinion on the subject.

when i started my "cut", i calculated out to 26.7% when i rechecked after about 4-5 weeks, i was down to 25.8%, i think. just make sure you take the measurements at the same location each time, so they're comparable. i like this method of checking progress, for the simple fact that muscle weighs more than fat, and it can be discouraging to not see the scale move, even when you're making good progress! btw, the feeling cold issue? might be that you're not getting enough food, and your "furnace" is shutting down. you can't stoke a really big fire if you don't add wood (fuel) to it, right?

fyi, it's fruit and/or veggies - you should be getting a bunch every day, but it doesn't have to be both every day. of course, if the only fruits/veggies you're getting are from sushi, you're likely going to run into a vitamin deficiency (and honestly, probably an issue with a lack of fiber). as for gaining muscle while losing body fat, that's typically called "beginner's gains", and will eventually stop if you're not doing any form of weight lifting. it's better to keep an eye on body fat, rather than weight, although tracking both can be beneficial. here's a page that uses various body measurements to estimate body fat percentage. BF% calculator. also, if anyone is "hitting the wall" on their weight loss, try upping your calorie intake by just a little bit (maybe 200 cal/day) it can actually "stoke your furnace" so to speak, allowing you to be more active. be sure you're getting enough protein too - estimates are 1-1.5g. protein for every pound of lean body weight you have. calculate this by multiplying your actual scale weight by the inverse of your calculated BF% - for example, a person who weighs #200, and is at 25% bf (roughly where i am) would calculate their LBM by multiplying #200 x 75% = #150 lean body mass = 150g protein min. in order to maintain/not lose their muscle mass. umm... sorry, went off on a tangent there, didn't i?

good question - i've no idea!?

go for a quick 1-mile run, and then a bout of hill sprints. i have a love/hate relationship with hill sprints, always look forward to them, and like how i feel after them, but while i'm running them, they're the suckiest thing in the world!

put a new battery in my car today so i could start driving it instead of the truck, but i still can't get it started. the power just dies completely when i turn the key over! like, no clicking, no engine turning over, just *turn key* = all dash lights/radio/dome/everything dies. looks like i'm gonna have to take it to a mechanic... -
moderately disgusted with child-like behavior. i wish people would just grow up.

wow. "shout" is one of my fave albums, as are "smooth noodle maps" and "total devo". (hell, even "new traditionalists" and "freedom of choice" are pretty awesome!) don't get me wrong i love the older stuff, but i think they only got better with every album. it's true though, there are some pretty big differences in style after "oh no..."

that calorie range isn't too bad, actually, but if you find yourself hitting a weight-loss plateau, you may want to *increase* your calorie intake. i know it's counter-intuitive, but it can help support more activity on your part. i don't mean jack your calories up a ton, but maybe up to 1600 or something, especially if you find yourself constantly tired, or getting run down/feeling sick, etc.

really? i have trouble finding anything of theirs that i *don't* like. (although i'm still deciding whether or not i'm crazy about the ez-listening stuff!)

BMR = basal metabolic rate, it's the rate your body burns calories at it's current weight, if you were to be completely sedentary for 24 hrs. so, basically, how many calories you burn simply to exist, for your organs to function... i have *tons* of info on this stuf, (including an easy BMR calculator, which can also include an activity multiplier based on your lifestyle, to estimate the amount of calories you burn in a typical active day - in fact, i've posted a lot of it in the past, in this forum. if anyone would like, i can dig it up again!

honestly, that's less than a *small* shake at mcdonalds, though - and breyer's is soooooo much better! (small shake = 16oz, 6 servings ice cream < 14oz.) oh, and btw, my total calories for the day was still only 2500 or so. my BMR is higher than that, so i'm still in a caloric deficit!
-
after having behaved for the last 5-6 weeks, averaging less than 2000cal/day, i broke down & bought ice cream - i've had 3 cups (that's *6* servings!!) tonight! still my lifting numbers are up, my running times are down, and i'm down 6-7 pounds since feb. 16th. i guess i'm allowed a cheat day on my diet, huh!?

i feel like a fat fuck right now!!

and to address this, which seems to be referring to supposed favoritism on the board... people who tend to have a track record of harmonious interaction on the board and no real history of any rules-violating issues are shown a little more tolerance when a post is questionable; a member who has a history of jerk-like behavior will garner much less. someone who has a history of being talked to by the mod staff, or even of having their warning levels raised should know better.
