Speaking of singer/models, anyone hear Milla's album "The Divine Comedy"? Good stuff. I really like it.

it is shockingly good. can't judge a book by it's cover with this album!

a bunch of the others people mentioned, +

2nd on the ladytron

client

Patsy Cline

Karen Carpenter

Enya (OK... cheesy, but for producing her own stuff and overlaying as many as 100 overdubs to get her unique sound)

and ALISON effing GOLDFRAPP. *sigh* my blood pressure's going up just thinking about her ;-)

Siouxsie Sioux

Christianna (Mephisto Walz)

Tina Root & Susan Wallace (Switchblade Symphony)

Liv Kristine Espenes (Theatre of Tragedy)

Christina Scabia (Lacuna Coil)

Chiasm

ever listen to liv's band after theater of tragedy, leaves eyes. its good metal plus its with her husband alex whos taller then, tall, it makes beauty and the beast metal that much better. maby i just like the band so much ever since they played at irock. and i couldnt help but hit on the merch girl who i think was her daughter. :p

and yes beauty and the beast metal is a genre. nightwish made it popular. but i tend to lump tristania and epica into it. my playlist has tons of female fronted metal. magica bye far is the most unique one as its the few times iv heard a power metal style with a female fronted singer that does not have that gothy feel to it

Roberta Flak

Nightwish (the old AND the new)

...too bad I'm late to the thread. L7, Warlock, Drain STH, and Liv Kristine are all on my personal list too.

And, yeah, still waiting for a female guitar soloist that's on par with the giants like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Also, a female bassist on par with Cliff Burton, Les Claypool, or Geddy Lee will earn me as number 1 groupie of all time. Just sayin. And if said bassist had red hair... just might have to build a shrine in the basement. jk ...maybe....

I saw those guys at G3 back in ... 2003 I think it was. Amazing.

Have you heard the guy Michael Manring (yeah yeah, I know; not a chick)? The inventor of the hyperbass. Check out Thonk (or any other album really, but Thonk is the only one I've heard). It will blow your sox off.

And I'll build the dungeon in mine to keep her locked up safe and sound. Mwa ha ha ha ha!

YES..

..and Doro Pesch (of Warlock). I love her--I just LOVE her. Did I mention that ICH LEIBE Doro Pesch? Oh yeah, I think I did. :)

As for a KILLERMOTHERFEKKER female bass player, have you forgotten Sean Yseult (of White Zombie)????

I haven't heard any of her solo work... guess I'll have to look into it.

See if you can find anything from a late '80s/early '90s band called Phantom Blue. Speed metal band. Nicole Couch is one of the greatest guitarists I've ever heard and her bandmate (recently deceased) Michelle Meldrum was damn near her equal.

...and check out a Brazilian guitarist named Badi Assad; what she did on her first two albums with just a nylon-string and no overdubs - you won't believe it even once you've heard it.

Those that haven't already been mentioned (as far as I noticed):

Sarah McLachlan

She always seems to have a down-to-earth demeaner. She is incredibly feminine - and basically is an example of how feminine does not equal weak. The best song (to my knowledge) is "Black" that appeared on the X-files soundtrack. Also, she started the Lilith Fair and raised about 7-million for charity - that ought to at least merit a mention.

Emilie Autumn (http://www.last.fm/music/Emilie+Autumn)

I just discovered her. Her style is awfully erratic, but interesting and well done. I listen to her and I'm constantly saying: Is she trying to be Gwen Stephanie? Is she trying to be Tori Amos? ..... etc. She seems really versitile.

Rosemary Malign (http://www.myspace.com/msrosemarymalign)

I've always enjoyed her attitude of seriously attempting to make her gender a non-issue (contrary to Sarah McLachlan's approach). At the same time, she partakes in a "scene" that most women (and men for that matter) are afraid (I mean - like REALLY afraid) to be a part of. Her "music" is extreme - really really extreme. (Her opinions are her own.)

Now - why is it whenever we talk about female artists someone has to wish death on Yuko?! Seriously, if you don't like performance art and think it's stupid - just be that way then. Making fun of her singing is like making fun of Bjork's clothes. If you don't "get" it, don't worry about it.

...in my defence...I was not laughing at her singing...there are so many other things you can rip on her about...

..but she is a Beautiful Humanbeing on the inside...even if she did wreck the Beatles...& right when it was getting really good..& SHE WAS THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE CAMLES BACK..so to speak..

She was just in town about 4 weeks ago, handling the alto vocals for Delerium. Wasn't really a fan before then, but she really got it done. :)

No, you were not making fun of her singing - someone else did in this thread.

I don't know a lot of Beatles history - but it generally makes me suspicious when people blame a woman for the actions of men. The Beatles decided to break-up. Why not blame the Beatles? I suspect that she has just become a scapegoat beause she is weird and the stereotype of the "woman who takes my male friends away" is easy to lay on her.

In experimental circles, we discuss Yuko in her own right. She's a performance artist who happen to be married to a member of the Beatles. I think one of her more interesting works is when she gave the audience scissors and had them cut off pieces of her clothes. Singing in a burlap sack was pretty fun too.
