Don't do it if it will hurt your mums feelings. Wanna know my legal name? Its easy.....you can look it up in public records. I was Wendy sue. Now I am Windy Rochelle. There. The secret is out. I feel better. Why did I change it? Just one to many times someone recited that 'a boy named sue' song to me and I got mad and changed it. And my name could be worse. At least I took what I was given and made it mine. That's why I'll be reluctant to change my last name if I ever marry. I never liked/used my middle name too much, so maybe I'll do that Hillary Rodham Clinton thing and replace "Marie" with whatever my last name is. There would be no individuality. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually in cultures where naming is an adulthood rite of passage, children have an informal name which is usually something kawaii, along the lines of "little mouse" or "little frog" or "laughing boy"... an individual name but still recognizable as a child's name. Then at adulthood they choose or are given (usually by community elders or whatever flavor of ritual specialist they have thereabouts) a "real" name. I really hated all 3 of my names for a long time... but always felt like changing my first name would be disrespectful to my mother, & changing my middle & surnames would be disrespecting my ancestors. Then I found out MaMa named me because of books she was reading at the time... so I felt like by giving me this name she gifted me with her love of books & learning, & also her verbal skills. So that's a good thing. Plus I value my individuality now... and you certainly don't run into a lot of Hilarys... & even fewer Byrds & Waddleses. (note to Detroit people: no, we're not related to Mother Waddles) And since when is jasmine a spice? Isn't a spice something that's used to flavor food, not just as a fragrance?
