Onyx
Very interesting (and frightening) articles in Time magazine this week about how India has completely taken over many tech support and phone support positions. I almost never get anyone based in the US when I have to call a company anymore. Just now I had to call Real Networks and they also have outsourced everything. Most are hard to understand. It's a whole different sentence structure. I had to spell my email address over and over. I find myself avoiding calling if at all possible. I believe the last time I got a US based person when I called a company was when I called T-Mobile. It seems this is something we will all have to deal with. There don't seem to be too many US based support people to call.
Der Nister
Very interesting (and frightening) articles in Time magazine this week about how India has completely taken over many tech support and phone support positions. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yet another reason why people with those jobs should start looking for new work, soon no Americans will be doing that. But they might find work in that field if they move to India.

Screw these free trade Republicans. Reversing NAFTA is my first and primary concern. CAFTA? NO WAY. I would also make sure we reform the American auto-industry so we don't have to settle for crap cars. And yes, it absolutely sucks calling to India. I am sure someone from Pakistan doesn't want to talk to an American who barely speaks Pakistani.
Scary Guy
Last time I spoke to an american was down in the southern states calling WOW tech support. I think I posted about it recently. I'd have rather had someone from india because they probably would have been LESS OF A PAIN IN THE ASS TO DEAL WITH! WOW, great service, lousy tech support. One other reason to become a mortician, THEY CAN'T OUTSOURCE IT!

The last time I called WOW for tech support, the guy was a complete moron and he STILL had that air of superiority going on. We scheduled an appointment because he couldn't help me diagnose it over the phone, so I just fixed it myself anyway later after I remembered how to do it properly. I cancelled the stupid appointment. I also had to call Cingular a bunch of times last week cuz my phone went wonky, and I spoke to an American every time. They were helpful and polite, but it bothered me that they used a script to try to empathize with how "frustrating" it is to have your phone malfunction. Some of them even tried to giggle or sigh to make it sound convincing and that was bottom-shelf lame.
Scary Guy
"Ha, you think that's bad? I talked to a person in the US about my cable modem. It went something like this. Them:"What seems to be the problem" Me:"Your DNS servers are down" Them:"are you connected through a router" Me:"That's not the problem" Them:"Sir are you connected through a router" Me:"yes, but that's not the problem, the problem is your DNS servers are down" Then she goes into this pre recorded speach in her mind about how she can't help me if I'm connected through a router. So I asked to speak to someone who knew more than her, she said she couldn't transfer me but I could hang up and call back, so I did just that. Next person was a guy, and I told him the problem. He said "I have to talk to the tech depratment about it" and put me on hold. While on hold a friend on line gave me the IP addresses for SBC Global's DNS servers. Which I promtly hung up and put them into the router, bypassing the WOW defualt DNS servers. Kinda surprising that it's running even faster than before. Pages load up pretty quickly. So I had to solve my own problem and talk to aggrivating tech support, this was like last week. At least if they outsourced it to India they would know what a DNS server is lol. Some kid there got their MCSE certification when he was 8. It gives college graduates trouble."
kellygrrrrrl
I think it is horrible We gotta look out for our own here. In just our small In State Corporate Office, we've let go 100's of American Employees that are now out of a job. I mean, nothing against India or anything...
