Car Accident

I'm driving southbound on John R. by 19 mile and traffic is heavy. I am trying to get to my Weight Watcher meeting, blasting "Shelter" by Icon of Coil. There is a red car in front of me and a white van in front of it. The white van puts his left turn signal on and stops. The red car in front me slams on the brakes and swerves right, but continues to swerve until suddenly it flips over in the ditch. The van pulls over and so do I and I notice people moving around inside. Other people park on the curb and they help the people out the car. The first one pulled out is a little girl about the age of 2. They pull the mother out, and so I rush around the ditch to give her some support while they pull her boyfriend out. Everyone made it out with minor injuries. I asked the girl what her name was and told her mind. She was shaking so badly I put my arms around her and held her til the ambulance showed up. The little girl was fine. She wasnt even scared. The boyfriend asked the little girl if she was okay and she said, "Yeah. Car fall down." It was so scary. I talked to the boyfriend and he said he thought the van was just driving slow but in actuality it had stopped. He said he looked away for a second but when he looked back he would of ran into the van if he hadnt of swerved, but he lost control of the car and thats when he flipped over. A police officer then pulled me aside to take my statement. I talked to the owner of the van and he said he didnt even know what was going on. I never got to talk to the people in the car again, cuz the police told me to go after they took my statement. I just thank God that everyone made it out okay.

Watching stuff like that can really get your adrenaline going... or worse.

About ten years ago I witnessed a woman get hit by a car at the track I raced at. The car had spun, flipped over a guardrail, hit her and dragged her about 50 feet. She was killed. The imagery from that is still as clear as the day it happened. :-(

I also witnessed an accident on 696 a few years ago. An older gentleman lost control of his car after attempteing a lane change. He tagged a van at the rear corner. It spun and rolled in fairly heavy traffic. I was on the phone immediately with 911 and then pulled over to assist. There was a young couple with a 3-4 year old child. They were all belted in and we got them out. Shaken.. a few scratches.. but otherwise fine. I was happy for that. They were very lucky not to have gotten hit by one of the other cars after rolling.

One thing to remember if you're involved in something like this... ideally you shouldn't move people if injury is likely and there's no immediate need to get them out. (Like fire) There's always the risk that you might injure them further (Think back injuries) if you do so.

I have seen some real bad accidents where I know someone died, if not 3-5.....and......it just makes my want to drive slow, take it easy.....let people pass me.

The last one was caused by someone getting all impatient and passing someone in a hurry......that causes more loss of life. So your a few minutes late.

Big frickin deal, at least you arrive alive.
