I often wonder myself...

It should not Be called MTV / Music Television

It should be called RSTV / Reality Show Television

:confused

DO they still play Video's? I couldn't tell you when I last saw one.....although I'm sure it wouldn't be worth it anyways with the crap that is out there right now.

We need to reinvent MTV, but call it something else.

There was ONE down too earth cool girl on the my sweet sixteen segments.....she was adopted.

All the other ones made me sick with their attitudes and whatnot.

I hate that they push the idea to teens and preteens that your a nobody if you don't live in a mans and shop at tiffanies or can afford trips to cancun. Or look like you spend hundreds of dollars trying to look cool.

I watch it and cry, and then I change the channel.

Yes it was great in the 80's to early 90's. Then I hated it in the mid/late 90's all except for AMP.

Then I discovered MTV X. Then when my parents finally got a cable packadge that included it, MTV X turned into MTV J.

WHAT BULLSHIT IS THAT?

Now the only cool MTV is in Germany from what I've heard.

Jello had it right... MTV GET OFF THE AIR!

I consider VH1 to be better now-a-days. The only things I like that MTV provides is Headbangers ball, Beavis and Butthead, Aeon Flux, and The Osbournes.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remebr when VH1 was the channel for "old People".........

I agree VH1 has gotten better...... so welcome to the old people club :wink

Headbangers Ball was a joke. It was their excuse to threow the undesirables into a late night time slot. They could have played that great music any time like they did with that shitty top 40 music. They were too busy thinking what their sponsers would say.

I use to like MTV...when I was back in high school. I use to have my Dad record all the 120Minutes shows for me. They use to play a variety of videos and it was decent then. Now they don't play barely any videos and when they do its all that rap crap and booty music that sucks. It has really went down the shitter.

Can't say I was ever that crazy about MTV... so much wasted potential. Only things I really enjoyed were the old Liquid Television, Headbangers' Ball, & 120 Minutes. Now seems like endless "reality" shows & they all make me cringe- I just pray I wasn't that self-obsessed and obnoxious when I was that age. Seems like every show has a special producer whose sole job is to make sure every negative stereotype about young people is followed faithfully. & I gotta agree w/HH- the ceaseless promotion of crass materialism & shallowness is truly sickening.

We were complaining about this at work today.

I remember when it forst came on. "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first video, but my favorite was David Bowie's "Ashes To Ashes." It was my first-ever view of The Cure and Adam Ant. It's really sad that it became reality tv. Whatever happened to Music Television? Isn't that what MTV stood for?

Pathetic.

They also helped make stars out of Marylin Manson and NIN hence the mainstream's misconception about goth to this day.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

don't you still have to define "goth" for us? it was never made clear.

but yeah, never really got into mtv. i'd watch it more if it were videos and if the music wasn't shitty.

MTV in the early 80's: awesome

MTV in the late 80's/early 90's: Well, I defended it when they first started coming out with "shows" like Remote Control and the Real World. They still played mostly music although some were not happy that they broke the music up into genres (120 minutes/HeadBangers Ball/Yo! MTV Raps). If I had known this was a segueway into.....

MTV in the late 90's: Hardly any music at all, mostly shows. MTV2 is started to fill the void. MTV2 played actual music until recently, now MTV2 is no better than MTV. Amp was a decent show that started on MTV though.

MTV today: MTV has sitcoms, reality shows and shows about pimping out cars but Music Television barely has any music. Not only do they not have music, but their shows are perhaps the worst that American television has to offer. Ever. It's painful to watch some of that stuff. They have a show where rich parents throw their spoiled 16 year olds a lavish party. That's a show. Really. That is the premise of the show. Every week a 16 year old has a party and MTV films it. The 16 year old is usually extremely spoiled. One time the girl jumped on stage and was dancing, the bands security asked her not to be on stage and she yelled back "No one is going to tell me what to do on MY birthday". Then there is LAguna Beach, which is where MTV camera follow around some kids in California. There is dating shows where kids have to go on dates with the mothers of potential romantic interests. I'm not joking. Who thinks of this rubbish? MTV no longer plays any music that pushes the envelope - in the brief periods where they do play music. MTV had helped usher in hip hop with Yo! MTV Raps and set the stage for the alternative boom of the 90's with 120 Minutes and Post Modern MTV in which you could see The Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, Buffalo Tom, Bauhaus, etc.

MTV has gotten progressivley worse. I really wonder what MTV will be like in 5 years. They'll probably follow garbage men around and have them trick out their dumptrucks and compete against rival garbage men. Real World 37 will finally come to Milford, Michigan and there will be a reality show called 'Vigilante' about armed pedophilia victims getting violent revenge on the Priests, drunk uncles and gym teachers who violated them in their youth, Ashton Kuthcer or Jamie Kennedy will come out after each "hit" and yell "oh bitch, you just got X'd".
