Cosmetic Surgery: On the Edge

A summary with some commentary. I much prefer the plastic surgery shows on Discovery Health over schlock like The Swan (though I'll still watch it).

Brazilian: Breast implants through the belly button. The doctor cuts open belly button makes a 'canal' to the breast. He has to be careful lest he end up in a lung or the heart. Empty saline cells are rolled up and put into breasts (under the muscle, actually) then pumped full of saline to the desired size.

The patient is young and the stretching of her skin from an A to a C isn't so bad. Hard to tell, but she doesn't look horribly out of proportion now. Of course, now she has two breasts that move entirely unnaturally. In fact, they don't really move at all and have that freakish perma-gap between them. Always, these things do not move. Whether she lies down, raises her arms, or leans over, her breasts will keep the same shape and position. It is freakish. [/rant]

Korean: Chin implant (going through the mouth), rhinoplasty (harvesting ear cartilage to remake tip of nose), cheekbone narrowing (peel away skin and muscle of forehead to access cheekbone, sawing then cracking cheekbone, pushed back, set) -- lost 1/2 inch in face width. Apparently, there's some controversy among Asians that she's 'westernizing' her look. The host spins it as 'balancing' her features. I'm not sure, she looked attractive before and looks attractive after the surgery. So at least the surgeon didn't turn her into a forehead-immobilized sideshow.

Surgery addiction: inserting jewels into the mucous membrane of the eyes. Dermabrasion, sanding off skin on your face to make your skin 'blemish free.' They showed somebody right after surgery, but not the end result. Doesn't look pleasant. German: plastic surgery to look 'ugly.' Has had doctors refuse to perform further surgeries on her. The host mentions 'some stars in Hollywood' not knowing when to stop with the surgery, hehe.

Only the bottom half of the German woman's mouth and her eyes move, she looks very freakish.

Host sez:No substitute for healthy diet and exercise.

Nice for them to note that.

American, Texan: Full body liposuction to shed 50 lbs. Normally, 6L normally removed, but 24L of fluid and mass being removed here. Using heavy sedation and pain killers, not general anesthesia. Epinephrine and xylocane pumped into area to be 'treated.' She can feel some pain, but will not remember it. 2.5 hours to remove 50 lbs. Must wear compression suit for 6 weeks. Size 22 to size 18.

After the procedure, she's still overweight. She still needs to diet, and, I imagine, can still regain the weight. She should've spent the money on a personal trainer and dietician. The host hinted that the surgery was a 'first step' for her to lose weight. Ugh, this should be the last resort.

5 improvements in plastic surgery

I couldn't type fast enough to list them, but they look interesting. Basically, it's performing procedures using less invasive techniques and using more precision so there's less scarring and better results. Plastic surgery is developing fast. If you're thinking of getting any make sure find a doctor up on the latest techniques. Looks like you can save yourself some unnecessary scarring and visible scars.

California: 58 year old woman. Six facial procedures in one sitting, 5-hours. Sagging eyes: bags and wrinkles removed (cut out, basically). Brow lift: removing tissue below hairline, scar is hidden under hairline. Sagging skin removed from below chin. Rhinoplasty. CO2 laser resurfacing around eyes.

Unfortunately, they only showed her two weeks after the surgery. She looked younger, but her face was still recovering so she had that stiff, botox look about her. I would hope once she's fully recoved that that won't be the case.
