Is our 1st ammendment right being violated? Is there too much stuff being Censored?

Care to give examples of what you mean?

Something that bugs the shit out of me is when people tell protesters of the war to shut up and support the troops. This sort of messege is subtly and not so subtly endorsed by the current administration. It's not outright censorship but it can have a similar effect for some people depending on where you live and who your neighbors are.

i go pretty back and forth on this.

for example music on the radio-

i think swearing should be allowed but not suggestive things. such as rape, murder, etc. or racist terms.

but over all i don't think music should be censored at all. just on the radio as it is something you listen to, driving along... i don't think you should all of the sudden be listening to something harmless and then hear something howard stern like out of nowhere from the djs. or something like gangster rap (though i like some gangster rap just not on my radio with my kids in the car)

on tv i think full out nudity should not be on "regular" tv- like 2, 4, 7 but by nudity i mean like "sex" type nudity. i have no problem with swearing as long as like i said up there ^ it doesn't suggest something horrible. this is all before prime time i mean. after that i don't think children should be up watching tv anyways ;) i censor what my kids watch anyways and they are not allowed to even watch much as it is (i have channels blocked etc) but i don't want to have to block out EVERYTHING so i think some channels should just remain "cleaner".

now when it comes to the internet- i don't think anything should be censored. as in you should be able to look at or listen to whatever you want. unless it is something like a message board, or myspace for example- then i think censorship is up to the owner of the website and i am all for it in that case. (for example, on myspace, i should not be seeing hard core porn videos on people's pages- which i have- since the site is for people as young as 14. that should NOT be allowed. and it is not, but it still happens.)

movies i don't think should be censored. they have a rating and as long as you look to that as your guide to what you are about to watch- why censor it? i don't let my kids watch anything alone unless it is g or pg and anything else i watch first to see if it is ok or not if it is something they want to watch and i am not familiar with it.

I wouldnt let my daughter watch anything alone regardless of ratings.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

well i have 3 kids and i don't do that for all of them. but i will let my 10 year old watch anything g and almost anything pg. i don't let my 2 or 4 year old watch just anything because i don't know how they might process it. so for them, i will watch it first or at least with them.

Censorship in any form is wrong. People should be completely free to express themselves however they see fit.

Well except for nudists, or at least the men and the ugly. Everything else is fine.

OK to be more specific, nothing should be sensored unless it overlaps the rights of other people. Unless the other people are complete pussies and are just offended by said content, then they can always walk away.

It's hard to determine what counts as a captive audience, and social trends contribute to what's acceptable to be exposed to BRIEFLY before you're given the chance to walk away, and what's unacceptable to be exposed to at all.

Let's say you flash people in a nursing home. They can always close their eyes, right? Problem is, they will have already seen your goods and it will have offended some of them.

Let's say that instead of flashing them, you're swearing at them. Like, in their faces.

"Fuck you, you gray cunt motherfucker!"

Definitely a captive audience, definitely infringing on said gray-cunt-motherfucker's rights.

What if you just passively curse? I actually got in shit for it at work a couple days after I started. I would say "fuck" and "shit" and stuff, not directed at anyone, and my supervisor grinned and said, "Don't curse!" once, so I assumed he was kidding.

I pissed him off the next day about something unrelated, and as part of the conversation with the HR director (who's a friend of mine), he tattled on me for swearing. I'm serious.

From Hannah: "He's not allowed to say the F-word, and you're not allowed to say the F-word, so please refrain from it."

IN A FIBERGLASS SHOP.

Of course about a week later he was swearing at the machines again. Fucking hypocrites.

As far as language goes, that's bullshit... or poppycock I should say. http://www.sho.com/site/ptbs/prevepisodes....id=s2/profanity Really good series there.

As far as flashing old people goes, or flashing anyone for that matter, that's fine too. Hell that Futurama where Prof. Farnsworth goes nude (I'm pretty sure that happens in more than one episode too) didn't even phaze me.

Most of what is offensive is just because it's that shocking. If nothing is sensored, and everything is seen, then eventually nothing will offend anyone anymore and we can get past all this nonsence.

Seriously, was driving down the street one day and there was this fat (I mean morbidly obease) woman in spandex walking on the sidewalk. Now THAT was offensive and there probably should be some type of law against that. But hey you see it enough and get used to it, then who cares?
