Detroit Tigers

I still have a little soft spot for the Tigers. I was 7 years old in 1984 and I played ball in St. Gertrude's little league back then. I count being at game 4 of the world series as one of my best childhood memories and the following game, in which they won the World Series (their most recent), was like magic at the time for me (forget about all the riots with people tipping over cop cars in the street and burning them, afterwards).

I don't watch television, nor have I for some years...but I do keep up with the Tigers a bit, I even kept up with them through their 12 consecutive losing seasons, one of which tied the all time worst record. This is my dirty little secret. -I usually go to a couple games a year, and I'm used to being able to go there with a friend and share a flask or have a cigarette and not have to worry about anyone catching me, because the park has been so empty...because they were such a rotten team. I didn't think I'd go to games after they closed Tiger Stadium and I still get teary-eyed thinking about that place...I can still remember how it used to smell, you know, it was just so...masculine. -It's amazing to me...how that building with those white walls can remain so pristine while all the other buildings around it are marked with graphiti...it's like a holy place to Detroiters and everyone knows it, nobody touches it. But anyway, I go to the games still and I still keep up via the raido or papers and I can't believe I'm looking at almost the same team of low-lifes we've had. Those idiots, they're winning, and the park is full of people...who no longer have to sip whiskey to make it through. It brings back memories.

I'm not sure if these guys can win the Series this year but they've had some magic, and they'll deffinately be in the playoffs. I can't count them out. Which is unbelivable for a Detroiter to be able to say.

So...I suppose this thread is sort of a random tribute to my innocence...and I just feel it wouldn't be right to end it in any other way then by saying Bless you boys. There, I said it.

^No, man, YOU confused me by saying that in her lifetime "Technically they have (well American, not national)". lol.

They won the World Series in 84 which would be the total MLB title, both for the American and National leagues; in 87 they made the playoffs, but they did not win the American league championship series...but since in 84, they won everything, it was all I could think you were talking about.

I'm just going by http://www.baseball-almanac.com/ws/wsmenu.shtml

In reality I hate sports, but when our home team wins the economy picks up which is good for everyone here.

Yes, all that aside, do you see how if you scroll down to 1984 the Tigers (American) are in bold font next to the Padres (National)? That means the Tigers played San Diego that year in the World Series and won.

i have a soft spot for the tigers as well that came from 1984/85 though i was 10/11 back then not 7. and i am didn't play for st. gertrudes but i did play for my school softball team in 7th grade (when i was 12) and we lost every game but one where we won because the other team did not show up (and our coach took us to dairy queen... actually i think it was just me and mom that went with him to dairy queen and i got a blueberry blizzard).

and we all got trophies at the end of the season though i have no idea why or what they even said as i took mine apart some years ago to keep only part of it, but then i think i threw it away or something like that.... anyways go tigers! and go 1984/85! some of the best years of my young life. when i am old and lose my mind i hope that i think it is 1985 forever ... :blink
