Do you guys think that it's too early for this new movie, World Trade Center? I dont think it is. I think that it needed to be made. Some people think that it needs to be made, but it's too soon. Still others think that it should never be made at all. What do you guys think about it?

On that day, as much as people think of the unity we felt afterwards, we were all alone and scared. I think everyone is going to deal with this as an individual. All feelings are valid toward this movie.

I completely agree with your opinion on this topic!

I think it's a damn shame that our society has to turn EVERYTHING into entertainment. It's like nothing is real for people unless it's on TV or a movie screen. There's a line in the novel Carrie to the effect that events "... have to be bronzed like baby shoes... so everyone can forget about it". I guess I'm old fashioned but it just strikes me as really unseemly. Not to mention that the real lessons of the events will go unlearned as long as people can take refuge in cheap "triumph of the human spirit" sentiment.

Too soon? it's been almost 5 years!

Anyhow not that I really want to see it made because it just sickens me that everyone tries to make a buck off of every single tragedy that occures on the planet. I'm surprised they didn't make one about the huge tsunami, and I heard there is one about Katrina in the works.

There is one for Katrina already? You are right about making money though. I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt come out with one about the tsunami. sooner or later they probably will though.

if they're making it, there must be enough of a demand for it, and if there is, what's wrong with giving people what they want?

(for the record, i won't be going to see it...)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Can I ask why you arent going to see it? Just for curiousity's sake?

my ex moved out of our house and in with her long-term boyfriend the night before, so that morning was my first morning without her.

and then the planes hit...

bad day all around...

besides, i prefer to surround myself with thoughts and ideas that encourage me, and lift my spirits, rather than help me to dwell on past negativity - one of the reasons i don't read (very few at least) negative news articles or watch any broadcast/cable news programs.

How is this any different from making a movie about Pearl Harbor, the Great Depression, the Civil War, or any other tragic event?

Not saying whether I think it's wrong or right, I'm undecided on most movies based on historical tragedy, but come on guys. You knew they were going to make a movie out of it sooner or later. I'm sure it won't be the last. Just be glad it's not a cheesy made-for-TV movie with bad acting and effects that look like lego-blocks.

If they really wanted to show they did this for the people who lost their lives and not make a buck, they can keep a portion of the money to cover their costs in making this movie and any remaining money can go to any 9/11 memorial being made.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

that would be a great idea

Some movies about historical tragedies have something to teach us. There is a lesson to be learned from the tragedy that they are showing us (better to read a history book, but sometimes you just want to watch something, right?). Tora! Tora! Tora! is a decent example of this. While not a film classic, it portrays with a very critical eye the mistakes and foibles that brought the United States and Japan together at Pearl Harbor. The film was cautionary in its tone.

Though I haven't seen it yet, and I suppose I will reserve final judgment, to me World Trade Center seems like jingoistic pap. It doesn't seem like it has any rea lesson to teach us, just gives us uplifting everyman-American hero crap.

You expressed it much better but that's pretty much what I was trying to say... portraying any historical event in this smarmy, rah-rah way doesn't teach anyone anything, just glorifies and reinforces the attitudes that contribute to tragedies in the first place.
