HipsterDufus
So yeah, we pretty much bought too much house for how much we could afford and now my escrow payment has increased $100 a month due to increased property taxes/insurance. Bye bye 401(k) deductions. Either we sell this place, or I need to get a better job and um, yeah, you guys know what the job market is like in Michigan. Not to mention the housing market is in a decline, so it'd be virtually impossible to get what I want out of it. It's not even like we lead extravagent lives or anything. I've probably spent a total of $50 in new clothes in the last 12 months. Ugh, I'm just frustrated. I already am in over my head and this isn't going to help one bit. HipsterDufus
Looking at my property taxes, those are what really killed me. It's my first year in the home, so they graciously decided to readjust them on me. And, of course, those aren't negotiable.

Fierce Critter
Sigh. I can definitely feel your pain. I'm sorry. We bought our first house in NC. Ended up house-poor, and almost ended up in foreclosure. Luckily, we sold it within 30 days of listing it. But I know how nerve wracking it can be to have to dump every penny into your home, and then have more bills hit. Best of luck.

I know here in Lincoln Park if your property taxes go up and you feel the increase is wrong, you can appeal to have the house value reappraised. Sometimes they over raise the house value and you can get them to change that. Worth checking into.
HipsterDufus
Thanks for the friendly responses and advice, everyone. I think I've come up with a solution, even though I don't really like it. I'm probably going to have to sell my '04 Saturn Ion. I only owe about ~$7500 on it and it's worth about $11500, so I could use whatever profit from that to buy a junker car and eliminate my car payment altogether. I have to take some personal responsibility for bettering my financial situation as best I can.
Homicidalheathen
My husband wanted to jump the gun and buy a bigger house now that things are going well. We have the medical bills payed off but still have two past due loans to pay off. I wanted to wait. I think it is a good thing we did, you just can't be to sure about the future. I want the garage and second bathroom but this will have to do for now.... Have you thought of taking in a boarder?

I bought a house for privacy and taking someone else in would eliminate the only reason that I'm even keeping the house (besides the fact that I don't have enough equity in it to make it worth selling). I'll live. I'll just have to make some compromises. I can live with a crappier car.
