Fierce Critter
Watched this yesterday, and I'm watching the extra features now. Directed by Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed & Confused, etc.) A fun little movie. Not much to criticize. I kinda like stories/films where they show the unexpected, like kids who can rock pretty well. I enjoy Jack Black, and this was fun exposure to him. Definitely a light film. Predictable even. If I have a major critique (which I don't usually), it's the bad miscasting of Joan Cusack as the principal. I like Joan Cusack a lot, and just didn't buy her as a stuffy hardass who turns exhibitionist over a little beer & Stevie Nicks music. The extra features on the DVD include a making of short, commentary by both film makers and the kids, a music video of the main song, and more. It also includes DVD Rom extras, such as a trivia game (I got 23 out of 35 - disappointing for someone who used to kick major ass at Rock & Roll Jeopardy), a band name generator (Fall Sorrow Experience or something was the name it generated for me), and more. I was pleasantly surprised by two Michigan references in the extras. In the "making of" short, we learn the lead guitar playing kid is from Belleville, Michigan - my sister lives there. Also, there's a question in the trivia game that includes an answer of "Goober and the Peas", which happens to be the first local band I ever saw live in Detroit. Ahhh, my days as a Goober Groupie... :whistling: Oh - look for the interesting gyrations by the guitarist in Dewey's old band during their performance in the battle of the bands... Jon and I both looked at each other with raised eyebrows at that.
Troy Spiral (13)
When i saw the ads for this one , way back when, i thought "oh...my..god.. that is going to suck.." But it had nearly universal good reviews. Oddly , its in my DVD stack right now, probably will end up watching it in the next few days. Glad you enjoyed it. =)
gothicmom
My daughter loves this movie. She watches it over and over. We all enjoyed the movie. When ever my son, 6years old, watches it he tends to rock out for a few days!
fallennon
My mother rented this for me while I was bedridden in the hospital the month before I delivered my son. I was miserable to begin with, but I really didn't care for the movie. I love Jack Black, but I thought that it was slow.
Troy Spiral (13)
Watched this one yesterday. Fun movie if a bit too predictable. I especially liked the school principle characther for some reason. On the DVD there are several "cometaries" the Kids Comentary one is great. Its basicly the kids that were in the movie sitting there, giving their blow-by-blow responses to what happens on the screen. I almost feel like i know these kids personally after listening to them run their mouths for 2 hours. Its interesting to hear a 10 year olds take on what its like to work on a film and also how it interacts with "being a kid". The one boy says to the girl that played the prissy, band manager ... (paraphrase)"everyone in my grade thinks your hot.." and the idiot blonde kid says "hey who do you think would win in a fight me or the asian kid".. endless child banter on a DVD comentary is pretty interesting.
