Troy Spiral (13)
I have been reading this thread i'm just afraid to respond as then i might have to actually DO something. The comments are much appreciated, seriously. So far my huge diet plan is to actually pay attention to when i eat and not just go rummaging through the fridge whenever i'm sort of distracted/stressed. Didn't realize how >often:laugh: Its not like i'm eating like a bird and still gaining weight. Its fairly obvious to me "ok jackass... less pop... smaller portions... get some god damn exercise... ANY exercise, walking from the bed to the computer to the fridge and back doesn't count... less fried crap, more fiber...". I've been doing some of the above suggestions. Subway is pretty good and sure better than fettucini alfredo frozen dinners health wise. Requires $$ and ... omg leaving the house though. (and driving which, i can do but is a bit iffy sometimes) i'm trying to go for walks. I walk the dog, seems to help, because i know he wants to go out, its an added incentive rather than just me "willing" myself to go walk. The south beach diet is available on the internet, really though i'd summarize it and most all diets as "eat less BS foods, lower your calorie intake fucker". Its just the whole >doing it:unsure: I actually have a vic tanny membership that i think my credit card is still faithfully paying for actually... ugh. ' I used to work out 3-5 days a week (cardio and weight), that just totally stopped about 10 months ago. I also used to take multivitamins virtually every day for years which totally stopped at some point, probably not helping.
Troy Spiral (13)
Eat a whole bunch of fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to get out and walk a little every day. I didn't cut out pop like Al, but I did start drinking diet. Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew are great. =) They also make diet pepsi in strawberry and cream flavor. it's awesome! And I don't know if I'm supposed to find it cute that you sucked on frozen tv dinners, but the visual i got from that... heh. Couldn't that be dangerous if they had any meat or egg or anything? Yeah i've pretty much totally switched to water and/or diet pop... the sucking on the frozen dinners thing was me just being a dork. I got that from a woody allen movie. "Are frozen dinners all you have to cook in here?" "I dont cook em i just pull them out frozen and suck on them" (paraphrased) heh I went from 220 lbs. to 150 lbs. in 5 months. Lots of walking each day ( roughly 40 - 50 minutes ) Eat one meal a day ( anything you want just don't over do it ) A snack or two ( very lite ) is also ok And that's how I did it ~ everyone was shocked and thought I wwas dying from my fast weight loss but here I am today dammit! And - since then I have only went up 9 pounds in 11 years ( without exercise ) ----- it could work for you too. One meal a day in boot camp and them guys dont die. Sounds fine to me. Problem is i LIKE eating. One meal a day? Omg, sorta like telling a guy he cant masturbate 27 times a day anymore. I call shenanigans! fat free pretzels and popcorn. Flavored rice cakes....fruits and veggies....filling but not fattening. Omg.. what is that crazy talk. That stuff is actual food that people eat? I thought that was just the fake food they put out for doing food commercials and sitcoms and things. Do they make fried rice cakes?

LuluVox
I can definitely understand one's desire to lose some weight. Just do me one favor and be healthy about it...I recall seeing a slightly too-skinny Troy back before his hermitage began, still thinking he needed to lose a bit, and it made my heart hurt. Be good to yourself, young man. Edited September 30, 2006 by LuluVox
pomba gira
Really good advice from Pharoh & Critter... a lot of what I have to offer is elaboration on their points. Much of my weight loss in the past couple years was due to the appetite loss & metabolic change caused by interferon tx... so now I'm done w/that & my middle-aged metabolism is re-establishing itself, I am really having to pay attention to my diet, activity level, etc. WATER, WATER, WATER! If your body knows it's getting enough hydration, it won't try to store nearly as much. Diet soda isn't the best solution for a lot of reasons which I won't bore you with here. One I will mention is that a lot of the ingredients in diet soda actually make your body use more water to flush them out... which causes your body to try & store more water. Exercise is important. Find ways to work more physical activity into your daily life. Personally, if I did buy a gym membership I'd never make it there 'cos I'm such a lazyass about "doing things". What works for me is just moving more in general... taking stairs instead of elevators, parking farther from the store, setting things up so I have to move around the house more, getting things myself instead of having a student do it. I do the grazing style of eating, so if I do eat chips or candy or whatever, I get a little bit at a time so if I want more, I have to get up & walk to the kitchen to get it. I invested in a workout machine (Tony Little's Gazelle Elite- the one time I allowed myself to be sucked in by an infomercial) and made a point of leaving it set up in the middle of the living room so I couldn't possibly ignore it... once you fold those things up & put 'em in the closet it's all over. Walking outdoors will work better (that is, you'll get around to doing it more) if you find a place to walk that you really like... someplace that benefits your spirit as well as your body. For me it was a particular beautiful stretch of the Riverwalk up here, where I've seen blue herons, deer, foxes, wild turkeys, and lots of really big turtles. Walking there is something I truly enjoy, not just something I "have to do 'cos it's good for me". The Michigan Department of Community Health has a big campaign going to get people more active... they have some good suggestions here. AFA food, doing the grazing thing (eating smaller, more frequent meals) is what really worked for me. It doesn't take long for your stomach capacity to decrease. A full restaurant meal is too much for me now, I always have to take most of it home. Be more conscious of your eating habits, use pattern-breaking strategies for negative eating habits, and try to really enjoy what you eat. If you learn to think of eating as a special, pleasurable activity, you won't do as much unconscious snacking or eating to the point where you feel stuffed. Frozen food is not good because of its very high sodium content. If you look at the labels, some of them have as much as 40% of the sodium RDA per serving. All that sodium just makes your body retain more water. Get in the habit of thoroughly reading food labels. Just because food packaging says "healthy" or "low fat" or "all natural" does not mean that it's actually good for you or will help you lose weight. The ingredient list tells the real story. The problem with "low fat" stuff: in order for you to enjoy eating it, food has to contain a certain amount of either fat, sugar, or salt. If they make a food with less of one, it has to have more of the others, or else it will taste like sludge & you won't want to eat it. and yeah, rice cakes have got to be the most flavorless "food" ever created. It really, truly is like eating styrofoam.

Just do me one favor and be healthy about it...I recall seeing a slightly too-skinny Troy back before his hermitage began, still thinking he needed to lose a bit, and it made my heart hurt. Be good to yourself, young man. Its that whole goth thing. I think at one point in my life i found what i thought was the perfect girl... we got along great, she seemed attracted to me and i was certianly to her. Then i found out "i only date skinny guys". Ever since then , even though i try to push it away, the "a bit too skinny" look on guys, seems to be the only way im going to feel like im not a seadonkie. Never did quite get there , and no chance in hell of it now heh. Im a moose at this point. Grrr i need some sort of mega-extreeme lose 40lbs in 2 weeks diet. Part of the reason (other than my health issues at this point) that i dont go out, is i know i look like crapola. Everyone has posted some good advice. I think you actually put the most important factor though. Diet, exercise, etc only do so much and sometimes really have no impact if there is no motivation. Set short term goals, nothing major think small steps, and achieve them....... Its the long-term motivation part per usual. Very easy to get excited about something, hard to stay dedicated to it. Really though i dont think the problem for me is anything to do with the "specific" diet. Its just the fact that i eat too much, period. I watch a lot of documentaries... and whenever they are in asia there are like zero fat people. I need to go on whatever that diet is. I know , generally , what is good and what isnt. I just need to not shove the stuff in my mouth. The problem is i historically just never paid much attention to what i eat. It really wasnt that huge of an issue. All the sudden, i get in a car accident, im sedintary... lotta medication.. now my weight is all over the place. But still... put... the food down troy... back away from the foooood. Its really not the specific food choices, its just the volume. *grabs shovel*
Head Wreck
at the moment i'm doing the style of kalari payyat as used by thwe hindu monks in the north. for 6 hrs of week i am under instruction only one and a half hours is actually combat. the rest is meditation, flexability and physical stamina and strength. it only involves one excersise that involves a wieght (to build up the muscles on the wrist for twisting). its doing wonders for me. i havent dropped any physical wieght but i have lost a few inches of my waist and clothes are now hanging on me again (GAH need to buy another set of leathers). the only downside is this form of martial arts is extremely rare, and i'm not comfortable typing out the excercise sheet for people to use just that unless they have someone there to guide them to avaoid injury (my first session sent my lower abs into spasms) my rough diet plan for each day is fibre in morning, carbs for lunch, excercising 1/2 hr later, then protien in the form of white meats or fish in the evening to repair any damage done to the muscles during training (thats how muscle is built up). i'm in group 2 fitness now. as i improve the excercises will become more intense
