Today we saw Pan's Labyrinth which I loved... beautifully shot & even a happy ending! I am very much into fairytale themes & re-interpretations so I probably would've liked it even if it weren't so visually entrancing. This was my first foray into a movie theater in about 10 years, so it was also interesting just being in a contemporary movie house and seeing how they've evolved from the stark, utilitarian mall multiplexes of the '80s & early '90s. They are really into creating a total experience nowadays- just like the old movie palaces of the 1930s-50s (like the Fox).

Happy ending eh?

Maybe... maybe not....

Yeah... Why Paint Cats, that's the 3rd one... first was Why Cats Paint. My sweet but gullible stepsister (who sends me every dumbass email hoax that comes down the pike) sent me an email that's going around about Why Paint under the impression that it's a "real" book (which the email implies) . I gently pointed out how difficult it would be to get any cat to sit still for a paint job like the ones pictured, among numerous other implausibilities. But yeah, those books are all hilarious... such a great send-up of these "artistic movements" that take themselves waaaay too seriously.

Forgive me, but I don't see how anyone finds that ending happy, even if one interprets the ending on a positive note. Of course, I've had this argument with Nienna since we saw it, but to me, the whole film is quite horribly Depressing. With a capital D.

It was a happy ending because she made it out of the mundane world into her true kingdom.

That's one way of looking at it, and probably the most accepted one, to be sure.

That's not the initial impression I walked away with, however.

I am heavily into literature & film of the fantastic so that's the easiest & most natural way for me to see it. We're all different tho, that's what keeps the world interesting & makes it fun to discuss films like this.

But even if I just look at it as "she dies at the end"... that's prolly a better fate than being a traumatized orphan in Franco-era Spain. But I guess that POV depends on whether or not you think death is the absolute worst thing that can ever happen to someone... I don't but I have a pretty different outlook on that than most people, so I wouldn't expect most people to agree.

Since I came down with a chronic case of unemployment I have had a bit of time to read...

so..

I have recently read...

*The Color of Magic

*The Light Fantastic

*Sourcery

Pyramids

*Carpe Jugulum

The Fifth Elephant

The Truth

Night Watch

Monstrous Regiment

and I am currently reading

Thud!

All of the above are by Terry Pratchett. The ones with the * are books I have read before.

I have also re-read the following:

Before the Begining (Our Universe and Others) by Martin Rees

and when it's time to go to sleep I get in a bit from...

Medieval Civilization by Jacques Le Goff

DVDs:

Band Of Brothers (Miniseries)

Saving Private Ryan, every episode. Insanely high production values. Highly Recomended. Much more engrossing than SPR. But done by the same "team".

Rome: Season One (HBO TV Series)

Awesome. Especially if you do some resarch about the time period. Amazingly well done & historically acurate. Lots of sex & violence to boot. =P

Battlestar Galactica: Seasons 1-2 (Sci Fi TV Series)

Amazing show. 5 stars. A few weak episodes but more than made up for by the rest.

The Miracle Worker (Movie) 1962

Actually couldnt keep the tears in on this one. Wow.

Books:

Undstanding The Koran by Mr. Mateen Elass

Short easy read but really, really halfassed summary of Islam. Pretty crappy. If you want a quick-easy summary of Islam "The Secrets Of Islam" is much better. (and has pretty pictures =P)

The Fabric Of the Cosmos by Brian Greene

Just started it pretty good. Origin of the universe for dummies basicly.

I am currently reading Evelina by Frances Burney. I'm almost finished with it. Afterwards, I'm looking forward to reading whatever my little heart desires as I will be officially gradeeated! Yeah!

The only thing I've been watching lately is the Angel and Buffy series. My life is dull, yes, it's true.

Still working on Deadwood. (DVD, HBO TV Series) Very smart writing. "Hardcore" western... meaning realistic zero-law universe. "Deadwood" being THE historical gold rush lawless whoring thieving killing raping town. Don't watch it with the kiddies.

Just finished "Atheist Universe" by Brian Mills (book, massive update from the previous version) This is my 3rd one on the subject. By far the most clearly laid out , will probably read it again. And no im not an atheist. Not yet anyway. I read all kinds of this stuff all over the board.
