Animals And False Pregnancies

Recommended Posts

So my friend said she will ALWAYS make sure her female pets (cats, dogs mostly) have one litter before getting them spaid. She said she had a dog that didn't and it went through a couple false pregnancies! Actually got big....and with swollen teets and everything!

I suppose it would be good if this is true.....I had heard of such a thing but have never seen it for real. Assuming it is real, would you do this? Risk homeless kittens or kittens and puppies that end up in the pound if you can't find them homes, so one animal won't go through this?

And, have you ever seen this yourself?

Your friend is misinformed.

In my opinion no cat or dog should be allowed to reproduce on purpose. There are just way too many beautiful animals being put to death every single day. If anyone wants a puppy or kitten there are thousands in shelters waiting for homes.

She's doing exactly the opposite thing she should even to treat a false pregnancy. Treatment is to have the animal spayed. Having a litter won't stop it as it can recur in any cycle that doesn't result in pregnancy.
