Im going to use this topic as the "SETI@DGN" page.

Please keep the commentary directly about setting seti up or discussions about SETI@DGN. If you dont LIKE SETI or some such...Feel free to just start a new post please.

SETI at home is pretty interesting and has spawned lots of similar projects worldwide for people that want to help.

Basically there is tons of radio astronomy data recorded, but not enough processing power at the various academic/scientific research locations to process it all to see if there are any Extra Terrestrial signals embedded in all that data. (funding is virtually non existent)

So that's were the "at home" comes in. You download a free client that runs as a screen saver whenever your computer is not doing anything. It takes a small chunk of the unprocessed data, makes a pretty screen saver and sifts though the data. Then it sends the finished data back to seti@home.

No they haven't found anything yet.

Yeah theres several dozen different projects you could choose from. Just the cool kids know seti is best.

THIS THREAD FOR SETI @ HOME. Not any of that other chaff.

So far my gimp computer hasn't finished 1 seti work unit. Although i tried it way back when like 4 years ago and it took almost 35 hours for my old 486 to complete one. Looks like it will take about 5 with the new software and computer.

I use to run it at work all the time on one of the servers I had at my desk. Its amazing how fast you can crank out the units on a quad processor.

But then they had to go and make it so I couldn't do that any more. Something about using their bandwidth for non work related things or some such.

My ex first introduced me to SETI years ago. From what I remember him saying a large chunk of Michigan Tech Univ runs SETI. But, then he was an ultra astro nerd.

WOW!! Thanks Troy! I had that running on my first 'puter like 10 years ago... just the other day I was thinking "hey I wonder if that SETI home thing is still going on"... and then of course didn't get around to researching it. So it's helly cool to have the info dumped in my lap like this! Now, um... since you're pulling info of Hille interest out of the hat- how 'bout some strategies for teaching Aspergers kids? How to get rid of fleas w/out fogging the house? Maybe some job leads?

And you can get rid of fleas without fogging the house... i thought by er.. buying that crap that you drip on the dog at the supermarket.. not sure what it was called.

Hey i joined the team but it doesn't recogize me as a member whats up with that i have seti on my computer and it seems to be working fine now and i joined ...i just tried to join again and it won't let me it says I am a member already........I wanna be low man on the totem pole......GEEZ what does a guy have to do to get behind in this world....

Well I just joined so I prolly have zero... so you can officially feel special now!

& yeah I put Frontline Plus on all 4 cats... 3 are now flea-free but one still has 'em... he weighs 21lb so maybe one dose wasn't enough. More to the point tho, the fleas keep biting ME now. I vacuum the rugs daily & put flea powder on 'em... I don't think they're in the bed 'cos I only seem to get bit on my feet & lower legs. I'm wondering if it's safe to wear flea collars on my ankles... eucalyptus sounds like a winner tho, I could put some of that on my feet & ankles... thanks Dubh!

Sprinkle it around the house on the floor. Then after they are gone you can sprinkle it in the outside doorways to keep them out.

I think it just took a while for the program to recognize me and dig deep down into my computer and latch on to my hard drive......

Your in there some where. Just hasn't put you up there yet. Do you know if any of your running tasks have been submitted back as complete? Might be the system won't recognize you as being there until then. (just a guess)

You only have to be online for the d/l or u/l. Other than that you can run offline.

OK I'm showing on there now.... altho apparently I changed my name to "owner" without remembering it. I switched it to PombaG. so should be all good. I think my BOINC prefs are set to give Tanpaku priority over SETI, 'cos I have way more credit w/Tanpaku... gotta figure out how to even it up a bit. But in the meantime, all of you get to feel superior to me! Hey part of a teacher's job is building her students' self esteem... we aims ta please!

& Dubh, thanks so much for the eucalyptus tip... it's worked wonders. I mixed the oil about 40:1 in water & put it in a sprayer, & just spray down the rugs/floors/furniture several times a day. It's even safe to use on my wool aubussons... I was really fretting about putting chemicals on those. Yaaaaay!
