To The Spelling Nazis

I was wondering something. Does the lack of apostrophes in words like "don't" and such irritate spelling nazis or is it just generally the poor spelling/grammar?

I do make at least what i think is a fair attempt to at least simulate decent spelling but somehow apostrophes and commas seems a bit out of my range to try and use properly.

Oh and i don't really mean "spelling nazis" as a insult, i think its fair for some people to be annoyed by others lack of interest in trying to make their intent clear by having horrific spelling... especially in an age of spellcheckers that take all of 30 seconds to parse even very long documents.

One "spelling nazi" thing that i think i am guilty of is user names. When joeblow isn't named Joe Blow, for some reason it mildly seems annoying to me. I mean that is in EVERY SINGLE POST.

Since pretty much any name you want is available and getting your name formatted properly is a 3 second job for a mod if you ask cant see why people have poorly formated usernames.

I think initially people might be expecting that maybe spaces dont work so they dont use them or that capital letters dont "take" so they figure its pointless.

Hrmm. I Probably need to get over that one, total waste of brain power.

You missed a couple of I's that should be capitalized since you are referring to yourself.

We are not perfect but something obvious will drive me nuts, especially if it's something I have done.

Hah. Wow , the capitalization of "i" didn't even occur to me. Damn spellchecker doesn't inform me of improper case! I feel betrayed.

Odd thing is i've been an avid reader all my life, you'd think that would be something that would help improve spelling and grammar.

I'll speak for myself when I say this. I used to be lazy when I posted messages, etc online. I would use dont, cant, Ill, etc omitting the apostrophes. Hell I would not put periods at the end of a sentence. But since I started writing poems, short stories I have quit doing that and have become more picky about it.

I'm fairly forgiving about any sort of spelling issues and it doesn't even occur to me to say anything about a persons spelling. But, sometimes I really think its almost an insult to my intelligence when virtually every word is spelt wrong.

Or... omg people that type in all caps. All caps I think is against the geneva convention.

A person that uses all caps should be forced to surf the web visiting every site that has pop ups but no software to block those pop ups.

The lack of apostrophes usually bothers me. Sometimes they're more important than you think. For example, "can't" means "can not" whereas "cant" means "the private language of the underworld" or "a whiny sing-song speech". Missing an apostrophe can change the meaning of the word entirely.

i don't capitalize letters, i try to correct my spelling as much as possible but ignore some simple typos now and then (such as teh instead of the, or an dthen instead of and then...). every now and then i miss a *'* and i may even OVER use *,* but when it comes to a letter i will make sure it is perfect. i use too many smileys and i tend to run on and on with a thought instead of breaking it up into paragraphs. i know i do these things but i just don't care

for me grammar is not as important in an im or on a message board. but in other things grammar is VERY important to me. i think it annoys me more when i know people just have no idea and they think what they are doing is correct rather than a lazy person like me just not caring.

I mean, many of those words aren't even pronounced the same... take your and you're. If you listen carefully, you can sometimes tell the people who don't know the difference, by how they pronounce them when they're talking.

Your = Yore. You're = Yoor. At least... that's how they SHOULD be pronounced. All the time. Regional accents notwithstanding. COME ON, PEOPLE!! IT'S PAST TIME FOR REVOLUTION!!!

Anyone who cares enough to read this thread might like to know, once and for all... "It's" is a contraction of "it is." Any time you can replace the word with "it is," it needs an apostrophe.

"Its" is possessive. Anytime you CAN'T replace it with "it is" and it implies inclusion or condition (The car's clock, its clock, The dog's leg, its leg, The night's coldness, its coldness), NO APOSTROPHE.

yes yes ditto all this. you forgot than/then. THAT bugs me. they are not said the same and they don't mean the same thing yet people don't seem to know how to use either and/or they only use one of them.

Usually it's only people using "then" when they mean "than." I'm not sure I've ever seen it the other way around. That one doesn't piss me off nearly as much as most of the others. Probably between the "yours" and the "itses" on my rage scale.

It bothers me a little, but not as much as it used to. I've noticed I tend to make errors myself when in a hurry or tired. That's made me a bit more tolerant.

I used to have an overwhelming urge to stop my car on the freeway and climb up onto billboards with grammatical errors and paint corrections on the signs.

I'm more offended by bad spelling than bad grammar when people are posting. I mean, everyone has an occasional typo, but you can tell when people just plain don't know how to spell. Laziness is unfortunately a key factor too. How can I take what someone has to say seriously when their post is full of spelling errors? Geez.

It does, however, on my Razr, when I text message it's like 4 extra steps to get an apostrpohe ... so I don't use them. It bothers me. My old cell had predictive text. I loved it ... but the phone itself sucked. So now I got a great phone with one minour little issue that bugs me. I deal.

Other than that (and actually even then), yes, it bothers me.

Wow... That's a great Idea... those people are always annoying.

On another note, I had the unfortunate experience growing up with an english teacher for a mom. And I've been lazy for a while but for the most part as long as the text is legible, I've no problem with it. I'm not going to be a hypocrate about items I find myself slacking on such as "cant" ect.
