JaneDead
anyone see this? i watched it tonight (finally- have been waiting to see this forever). anyone have any theories to what it all means? i couldn't help but feel several different possibilites about it all - but none of them strong enough to make me feel certain what it was REALLY supposed to mean. i don't even think the people who directed the movie had an intention for it to mean any ONE thing. gothicmom
I enjoyed Vanilla Sky. I like movies that turn up real strange with lots of twists and you can't figure out what the hell is going on.
SomeDanGuy
I liked it too. Though it's been a while since I've seen it, so my memory of the details isn't great. You're asking about what meaning to take away from the movie in general, right, and not just what actually happened in the story? I usually just enjoy the ideas in movies and don't try too hard to look for the deeper meaning/lesson the director is trying to get across. (....not that there's much other choice with some of the garbage that's been coming out in the theaters lately :/ )
phee
I really liked the movie right up untill they tried to package and explain it in a little sci-fi box, it kinda moved like a psychological David Lynch thriller, but then they tried to wrap it up.... One of the reasons I liked Donnie Darko, Lost Highway, Muholland Drive, Picnic At Hanging Rock, was that they left it up to you, your interpretation, and your imaginiation. I felt kind of let down by the end....
Troy Spiral (13)
I've been thinking about checking this one out for a long time , but theres such a LONG LONG ... did i say LONG list of "to be checked out" films on my list that this one hasnt gotten there yet. Maybe ill just have to get it now and get it over with hehe. I cant say that a film that has "closure" is a bad thing for me. Mullholand Drive is basicly one huge "open end" , and i've watched that thing 4 times now, and like it. But if it did have a "resoultion" im not sure i'd decide i didnt like it. Maybe im a bit to left-brain, in that, even though the movie may end without really "closing" itself, it would be nice if i at least had the HOPE of figuring it out. Some movies are so surreal , that to try and figure them out is futile. But I do get irritated with movies that have "too easy" an ending , such as, a strangely happy ending comming out of nowhere, or all sorts of lose-ends getting cleared up in the last 10 seconds of a film totally out of pace with the rest of the story. Not to say this comentary directly has anything to do with Vanilla Sky, other than , it seems its "one of thoes kinds" of movies(?) If its donnie darko or 13 monkies style... that is... only really leaving you with 1 "main thing" to ponder, thats still fairly "closed" in my mind, rather than the "what the hell was that WHOLE THING about?" that some of the lynch movies leave you with.. heh
Troy Spiral (13)
Just looked vanilla sky up on netflix and for the rating it says : (out of a 5 star scale) Average of 431,343 ratings: 3.1 stars Average of people who rate like you: 4.1 stars Not that i base what i rent on the "nextflix rating" but it has , more often than not, steered me in the right direction (once i got above 500+ movies rated) hrmm
JaneDead
i agree phee- i didn't like the sci-fi explaination. i decided to not really go with that one personally.

JaneDead
i think the only reason it ended up being "ok" at the end after that sci-fi *twist*.... was the wake up david wake up and you see him wake up. but just see his eye ball. so you REALLY have no idea just WHEN he woke up at that moment. or if it that was him waking up at all... that makes you wonder and erased all the badness of the sci-fi twist from my mind. that sci fi stuff just made it silly imo.
