Covered Songs

I was thinking, yes, I know it's strange, but anyway, I was thinking of some of my favorite covered songs, today, and I was just talking about this with a friend of mine...and now you have to pay for it. I will here list my favorite covered songs:

1. Iggy Pop, Sea of Love (album 'Party', 1981) (written by the Honeydrippers?)

2. Nick Cave, In the Ghetto (album 'From Her to Eternity', 1984) (written, Elvis Presley)

3. Billy Bragg, Never Had No One Ever (album 'Bloke on Bloke', 1997) (written, the Smiths)

Another obvious one~Sid Vicious, My Way (single 'My Way' June 1979, album 'Sid Sings' Dec 1979) (written, Sinatra)

Those that come easily to mind...

Favorites:

Wax and Wane, by the cocteau twins, as covered by the deftones *really, it's neat*

Shake the Disease, by Depeche Mode, as covered by Hooverphonic

Small Town Boy, by Bronski Beat, as covered by Paradise Lost

Metro, by Berlin, as covered by Alkaline Trio

Manta Ray, by the pixies, as covered by Man or Astro-Man?

Lay Lady Lay, by Bob Dylan, as covered by Here (based off the cover by ministry) *this song is AMAZING*

Things I hate:

Stripped, by Depeche Mode, as covered by Rammstein

Personal Jesus, by Depeche Mode, as covered by Marilyn Manson *thanks for reminding me, Paul*

I Feel You, by Depeche Mode, as covered by Placebo *sorry dave*

Enjoy the Silence, by Depeche Mode, as covered by... well, anyone really.

I'm seeing a trend here... but I will avoid breaking out the cover album that contains so very many hated Depeche Mode covers

Coma White, by Marilyn Manson, as covered by Apoptygma Berzerk *gee guys, thanks for taking a crappy song and not making it any better*

Ziggy Stardust, by David Bowie, as covered by Bauhaus

Okay, I'm spending too much time on this.

Perhaps more later.

Funny this gets brought up now... A group of friends from SG got together at my place recently for a Mix CD Exchange. My mix was a bunch of covers plus the originals.

Some of what I had on it:

Satisfaction (I can't get no) - Devo, Original; Rolling Stones

The Robots - Senor Coconut and his Orchestra, Original; Kraftwerk

I Fought The Law - The Clash, Orginal; The Crickets (Although I put the Bobby Fuller Four version on.. I can't find the original)

Ring of Fire - Wall of Voodoo, Original; Johnny Cash (I also like the Social Distortion version)

Dear Prudence - Siouxsie and the Banshees, Original; The Beatles

Ball of Confusion - Love and Rockets, Orginal; The Temptations

Blue Monday - Flunk, Original by New Order

Tainted Love - Soft Cell, Originally recorded (But not written by) Gloria Jones

Mallochai--Too many people trying to make careers covering Depeche Mode's songs and especially album, Violator; one can tell easily when someone isn't very into Depech Mode, because Violator is the only album that they'll know. I'll never be able to listen to Personal Jesus, ever again, perhaps not that entire record, it's on.

MB--Yes, that is a really fun cover. And I like any band who has a song called Corporate Anthem. Those guys are probably still playing in a garage somewhere, I just feel it.

KellyG--I sort of feel that cover bands just have an appeal like something which only exists to provide momentary entertainment and those groups are too successful attributively to whichever songs they are covering. An album from a cover band is like a novelty or something to me, I just can't take it very seriously. Nor can I take seriously an album where critics decide the best song is a cover from another band. Take that!

I liked Apop's cover of Coma White. :)

Also, Apop's cover of Fade to Black. Also, Apop's cover of Cambodia. Hmm.... Apop.... covers.... I'm seeing a trend. :wink

Also, I am not sure who does it, but I heard a cover of Land of Confusion that I didn't find complete offensive. Though, I had to laugh when the DJ had to explain to the listeners that it was indeed a cover.

Also, I not a huge fan of the cover, but some metal band did a cover of CXS - Deception. I just thought that was pretty cool.

I am not very good with names as you can tell.

well two of my fav covers are by the same band...

Deftones- The Chauffer (Duran Duran)

and

Deftones- No Ordinary Love (Sade)

next would be

Hooverphonic- Shake The Disease (Depeche Mode)

Faith No More- Easy

Zwan- Number Of The Beast (Iron Maiden)

just about anything Richard Cheese does (he's the guy who covers top 40 and popular songs loungey)

The Gourds- Gin and Juice (totally country with banjo and all. its freakin GREAT!)

Iron Horse's "Fade to Bluegrass" album is muscial excellent, its all Metallica songs done as bluegrass and its ratehr rockin scary enough

At The Gates- Captor Of Sin (Slayer)

So far, I feel that everyone has passed, except Kelly. Kelly has to stay after and sit in detention.

It seems like everyone hates Depeche Mode covers save one malcontent, but that's all right because I like the Johnny Cash, Personal Jesus, cover. New Order covers are really evil, as well. Lay off Joy Division, too--I've heard a Cure cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart and basically, I'm not mad at Robert Smith as long as I don't have to listen to that version, ever. But I think we all like it when someone covers a hip hop song. And Phee picked my favorite B-52s song, but I'm still going to seem offended. Fuck the man, down with authority.

I would also like to challenge everyone to find Iggy Pop's version of Sea of Love because it is indeed the best cover ever. And If you ever get married, you will need it for your reception. I am saving that record, just in case.
