Do You Have To Have A Passport....

Recommended Posts

The travel initiative requirements will be rolled out in phases. The proposed implementation timeline is as follows:

*

December 31, 2006 – Passport required for all air and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

* December 31, 2007 – Passport required for all land border crossings, as well as air and sea travel.

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

1.

Proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver’s license, voter’s registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.

2.

Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver’s license.

All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.

Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

If you are a dual U.S./Canadian citizen you should always present yourself as a Canadian citizen when entering Canada. However, U.S. citizens should use their U.S. passports when entering or leaving the United States.

Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry.

actually, they just pushed the date even farther into 2008 (I have been watching this very closely since it involves me greatly) but soon yes you will need a passport. Insane? Yes. Stupid, maybe. Protects the people of the USA, doubtful. All it does is force people to go out and buy these things, greatly more money for the government because these things have to be renewed very often and costing upwards to 100 bucks.

It's not really that one needs a passport to get into to Canada so much as it is that one now needs a passport to get back into the States. I've gone over with a friend not to long ago and the American border guard almost put him in jail as a John Doe, because he didn't have a passport. On January 1, I believe the new law regarding passports to get into the US from Canada goes into effect. I'm not sure there is a "sister" law regarding entrance into Canada from America.

Don't you have to renew a passport once a year? That would be 100 bucks a yr just to visit canada once or twice? Not good for the economy. I don't think the US wants us going over there to spend our money is all. Or bringing back drugs...i think it may have more to do with fear and the drug trade.

Passports are good for 10 yrs and then have to be renewed.

cost is about 85 bucks. They recently raised the price so I'm not so sure.

You can file for a passport at the post office. You will need a (2)pics 2"by2"

of yourself. Also, 3 peices of I.D. Then file your one page peice of paperwork.

They run an extensive background check and you will receive your passport via mail

in 6-8 weeks or a reason why you have not received it. Good luck.

Its not easy being a player with a passport. (had to sick and twisted thing that I am)

I beleive our border with Canada was the only international border in the world where passports were not required; it's not really such a terrible thing, that the American government has started requiring passports. Why is it that so many Americans don't have passports, anyway? I suppose Americans don't value culture much, or least not any culture other than their own...which can hardly be called culture. What the fuck is wrong with people? -There's a whole world out there. Travel.

I got into the bahamas with a birth certificate. and i'm probably one of millions of americans who just can't afford international travel. =P i mean, if you would want to take me to italy or japan or anywhere else, that'd be flippin' sweet.

Well, you need $$ to travel....I don't have that.

I suppose one day when I have that....I can travel, then I will think about culture and travel!!

I suppose my drab attitude towards the subject is due to the fact that I cannot travel, because I do not Have $$ cha ching.

First. Kelly: Bite your tongue, woman. Canada has some fantastic places to go and visit. Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Newfoundland, etc... Like... what's yer hangup???????????

I've got a lot of family there and visit fairly often.. so this is not really an optional thing for me. It makes some sense that travel between countries should require a passport. On the other hand, the European Union is working towards easing border crossing requirements aren't they?

I have had nothing but problems with customs.

They do not like me.

Pre-911 as well....I can only imagine how it will be now.

I took a foreign exchange student from France over there once...just to get some city scape fotos for her, and so she could see Detroit from the other side.

Little did I know she FORGOT her passport....

We were in custody for hours....I talked to the lasy at the counter debating back and forth with her explaining my situation.

She debated back and forth with me.....

then at the end of the conversation all I had to do was fill out some small forms....

She couldn't have told me that from the start?

I wouldv'e filled out the damn paperwork.

Ok...I can understand the issue with the passport and blah blah blah....but if she would have told me to fill that damn form out, I would have...instead, she kept me waiting for hours, made me feel STUPID, and humiliated me.

the 1st time I ever went to the Casino, was the 1st time I ever went to Canada on my own.

With a group of folks.

We were at the booth and put a little piece of paper in the winshield, and pointed and said go that way....

That way was the exit.

to get into the main roads.

Went to the casino.

Came back a week later, and apparently, we evaded customs...that little piece of paper?

It was a little flag that ment we suppose to go and get the car raided.

So this time, they told us to go that way again...which was the customs thing.

They had like 10 people tearing the car apart, impounded it, and Strip searched us to find NOTHING.

I had a bottle of vitamins.....they thought it was drugs.

Because we avoided customs they apparently thought we were drug smugglers.

They tagged my license so that if I should show face again, I will only have to go through that again.
