Why Does Clothing Affect People's Perception Of Another Person ?

Recommended Posts

I have notice, on this theread we seem to be hung up on just the color of your clothing and not what your actually wearing.

I for example rarely get approached because i wear skirts an hosiery, so in my case the color matters very little because i wear something that is generally not acceptable for my gender to wear. now i wear in because i find it very comfortable and in my minds eye i'm attractive in it, while most people think i'm gay because of what i wear it has nothing to do with how i carry my self or what i'm doing, its fully based on what i actually wear. In reality i'm a smart funny individual who is fully straight.

so its really not about what the color is as much as what the actual clothing is.

So you're a straight guy who wears skirts and hose?

You should PM me.

Two things:

1. You can't go around naked.

2. No one goes on stage without thinking about what they're wearing.

One more thing:

3. Sometimes clothing makes people sexier than nudity.

1. Troodat.

2. I do all the time. That's the magic of "concert black."

3. Ditto++. See above posts in re: men in tights.

The point being...

1.) You can't "not" communicate ever... you even communicate when you sleep (what your PJ's look like, what your bed sheets are made of, etc...)

2.) While you can't help others judgement in an immediate sense (usually), you can alter their points of view eventually.

3.) One of the few parts of communication you can actually control about yourself is what you wear... Unlike say the sound of your voice...

4.) Knowing all this, if you wear all black, people are going to judge you, and you can perhaps alter their perception by being a "nice person" in black.

I tried for nearly 10 years to teach myself that "looks don't matter" and i failed. I think somehow , just genetically or something there is some part of human nature that has to at least base a bit of its opinion on appearance. If it was just a learned , cultral behavior i think i could have worked my way out of it by now.

That would include all aspects of appearance. Its frustrating as it seems somehow "immoral" or some such to me. But damnit, at a minimum i cant have a girlfriend that i don't find physically attractive or dresses like a slob 24/7. Should it matter? Probably not. I still try to get over this , but i'm not sure its possible. :cry

It's natural, thats why it so hard to over come. Look at nature. Even insects go on apperance... sure, there are many other factors... but damn near everything alive uses apperance to judege those around them. Whats the point of trying to throw out one of the most basic forms of communication? Human nature I soppose... arrogince really... Somewhow because we can rub two sticks together and make fire... be cause we have these nifty thumb thingys... we are somehow above our own nature. Clothes don't make the man, they just tell everyone who the man is.

Right but whats "natural" and what is "right" are not the same thing. Its natural for us to beat the hell out of each other when we get mad (or yell and scream or some other non-civil action)

We learn, to be nice/moral/friendly/smart as we mature/learn. I'm not sure becasue something is common, or cuturally acceptable that its right.

I don't nessisarly thing that makes it wrong either. But what feels right or what is common/natural i don't think really is a good way to judge correctness. If it feels right to go blow your load in somones face at work.. not sure that makes it a good thing. =D

"Well its common, or is something you "cant help"" does let us rest a bit easier... and then put it out of our minds. Not sure that either is a good way to decide if something is correct/fair/moral either. What is? Hell if i know.

as a scientist i find that to be very interesting. i study people i live an die by scientific method. i see it's application in what youv'e tried to do and in your failure there is much knowledge gained. i could only guess at how much weiser you must be for trying.

if appearnce is so important then we should all consider our own a little more as a favor for the rest of the world. unless it's like fuck the world then dress in all black.
