Too Many Pu-Pu-Pu-Pu-Pu-Pu-Puppies

So I'm a music ripper. So file-sharing is the RIAA's main complaint. Hey, they get paid a certain amount of money PER burnable CD bought, so I honestly dont know what their beef is.

Yep, I did a research paper on the pricks. They've got no real ground for whining about file sharing and music ripping. After all, just what Don Henley said...... it's the music industry's fault.

Anywho..... what types of music do you have on your computer?

I admit to having the occasional Pop song in my Music folder..... but I have songs from artists raning from Kansas and Don Henley to Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Assemblage 23 and Wumpscut..........with the occasional Switchblade Symphony, KMFDM, Velvet Acid Christ and Skinny Puppy mixed in. There's lots of other songs by artists I've downloaded and I am in dire need of burning them to CDs but that's not the point.

I'm just curious..........who here downloads music and what types of music/artists do you have downloaded? ;D

Heh, I'm a DJ and I DJ with my computer.

10,243 files total spanning about 50 GB

I have everything under the sun almost including stuff I hate just in case.

I can see the RIAA's viewpoint though but if it was the artists that were getting paid then I would justify getting a CD since most of the cash goes to them.

I also don't buy CD's from artists I don't like but I have to DJ because I get requests for it. I won't support them.

I can almost guarentee that if I book a band I either buy a CD to support them or they just give me one cause I'm a DJ. When Attrition came through I bought their entire catalouge (12 CD's and a comp) for 1/2 price because they still had to cover production costs on them.

I also know it's no where near the holidays but http://www.whatacrappypresent.com/ is still awesome.

BTW as far as the CD-R's go yes they do get cash from that but it isn't much. They will get more from retail CD sales. Also I don't believe they get royalties from ALL CD-R manufacturers and I'm also not sure if this is true for DVD-R/RW media.

EDIT: All of my mp3's are illegal since whatever I have on CD I don't need in the system. Audio quality is better from the CD so I prefer to use those.

Also I prefer to use IRC and FTP to get them since it's harder to be traced through those. They just busted a DJ (in sweeden I think) with 50,000 files durring a club raid, I think they gave him the shaft.

If this Attrition IS the Attrition I'm thinking of, then you are a lucky guy.....I like their song "Two Gods are Better than One." (( Compilation CD 'Projekt' )).

I'd figure that all my MP3's are illegal too, I DL off of WinMX, but I dont file share because I somehow managed to make it that people cant DL off of me. I dont know what it is, but all their downloads just cancell out..... ;P

To me, honestly, I think the RIAA is being a big baby about file sharing and music piracy. I am seriously getting sick and tired of hearing nothing but 50 cent, Ludakris and Usher..... what happened to Mandi Moore, No Authority and Hoku? People can dance just as well to Pop as they can to hip-hip and rap. (( Eminem is the only rap I listen to..... period )). And, artists today apparently cant produce music as good as they used to. Nowadays, it feels that artists are made, not discovered......the only 'discovered' bands I'm hearing of are Rock like Breaking Benjamin, Velvet Revolver, Jet and several others.

Also, I pirate music because I lack the funds to go out and buy the albums I want.....apparently the RIAA doesnt understand that. Of course, when I finally manage to go out and buy some burnable CDs...................

.........you get the point.

Warning: I get crazy about RIAA and file sharing discussions. The idea that sharing information is infringing anyone's rights is ridiculous. But, best to stay away from that topic, because I get stupid. You've been warned in case you feel like pushing the buttons. In fact, I already have replies to comments written that all I have to do is copy and paste. Chances are good, I have one written for your poor argument.

With that said, I currently do not have a lot of stuff sitting on my computer. I have things broken down into catagory. I have stuff organized by record lables, then by misc artists. In record lables, I currently have a folder for these lables:

Ad Noiseam

Ant Zen

Cold Meat Industries

Constellation Records

Ninja Tune

Projekt

Mirex

Normally I have a lot more than that.

In artists, I have quite a range of stuff, including most of the currently hot stuff in the breakcore genre. I have quite a bit of rockabilly, drum and bass, some ambient like Lustmord. I have bunch of Muslimgauze on there for some reason. Rachel's, Shinjuku Thief, Death In June, Current 93. I have some rap and hip hop on there too, mostly underground stuff.

Yeah I have a hard time that Velvet Revolver was "discovered", I keep calling them Guns & Roses 2.0

As far as CD's go, I will support bands on lables with no affiliation with the RIAA. I can't stress how important it is to support the indipendant struggling artists. Especailly when they go on tour (because thats usually how they make the money to keep going if they're working off a shoestring).

I don't download any mp3 for free that wasn't offered free from the artist themselves or a company representing the artist.

I really don't see how hard that is to understand.

I guess artists and musicians generally have a different perspective on the issue than people who can afford a $2,000 computer and DSL, but can't stand to spend $10 on a CD or $9 to go see a movie.

I used to dub tapes when I was a wee tyke because I was dirt poor...if that's the case...the voodoo will not get you. However, if you are just a cheap skate that is pissy about all the "horrilbe corporations trying to infringe on your 'right' to distribute their products to the world free of charge"...you are not going to get any sympathy from me. If mass media pisses you off...just stop caring.

I generally troll around iuma to download music, as well as looking around on artists' official sites to listen to music. Right now I'm listening to PSYDOLL.

It took me a little bit, but the title of the thread is from a Primus song, yes?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Yes it is, quite a fun Primus song too. ;D

"Too many puuuuuppies are trained to kill."

And Symmantix, honestly I DO understand where you're coming from. My personal, current situation consists of me barely able to afford to keep my Jeep's belly full of gas. I even have to find a second job soon to help keep up with insurance payments as a payment made right now would drain my ehcking account completely.

As far as Mass Media goes, I scoffed when I saw that Paris Hilton is starring in the remake of "House of Wax." Now THAT'S some serious apathy towards Mass media. However, all hear is rap and hip-hop and I am seriously missing the good stuff like Richard Marx, Heart and Journey. So I either steal CDs from the parents' CD collection and keep them myself (( I did this when my dad received Wilson Phillips in the mail.....I immediately claimed that CD mine )) and I did it with my mom's Journey CD.

Plus that, most of the music I download is music you'll rarely find in mainstream stores like Target or Meijer or Walmart. I was actually surprised to see 2 KMFDM albums at the local Barnes and Noble. My jaw nearly hit the floor. But no.....no VNV Nation for FarrIL's amusement. No sirey!!

Also, I have come to one conclusion......despite the fact that it's clogging my harddrive, all that music I've downloaded is expanding not only my musical horizons but my inspirational horions as well. If I hadnt downloaded WinMX to find better luck with music, I never would've adapted so much with the Cruxshadows' "Binary" or other such songs. If I had a fortune in my pocket, it'd go to revamping my music library and buying plenty of CDs of artists I like.....and artists I like even more because of DLing their work.

Scary Guy, blame my parents. ;P

My mother got me listening to Richard Marx, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Rod Stweart, Cher and a bunch of other 'soft rock' artists. I went to the Josh Groban concert with my mom and stepdad August 8th when I could've gone to DirtFest with my sister to see CellDweller.

My dad got me into Journey, Heart, Kansas, Don Henley, Ted Nugent, Damn Yankees, Santana (( a little bit.....I'm not TOO fond of them )), Matchbox 20, Melissa Ethridge and some other artists.

The rest my sisters made me listen to. Jeri got me into Martika, Madonna and a few bits. Allison got me into Papa Roach, Seether, Chevelle........the list goes on. I think Allison is the reason I listen to Techno.

So yeah...... I'm not just a mix of VNV Nation, Wumpscut and Suicide Commando with a taste of KMFDM, Switchblade Symphony and Nickelback......I've got plenty of genres I listen to. It's just a matter of mood..... oO

I'll totally tell that whole story some time. It's not the same without the accent.

Being that Myself and Phee paid for the entire production of the DGN CD and quite a bit of effort went into it - I would be irrevocably pissed off if I heard that someone was filesharing because they couldn't afford the $5 to buy a copy. That is at least until we break even...but honestly even then, I don't think I would take it very kindly.

Btw, all the artists on the DGN CD submitted their work with no expectation of receiving any $ for it. Any funds left after the CDs are sold (about $200 if completely sold out) will be used to assist Troy with hosting this community.

This is totally understandable, as you have a vested monetary interest in this. Much as a record label does.

How do you feel about file-sharing in general? Does your experience with putting out the DGN CD change your views at all?

I have always been against mass filesharing. I tried kazaa one time and kicked myself for even doing it. Sites like myspace music and the old MP3.com were great for people looking to expand their horizons as it is the artists that choose to put their work out there.

Since the DGN CD, my view hasn't changed it has only served to give me a more personal look at the industry's side of the coin.

I honestly wish I had the musical talents AND equipment to make music.

But then, I lack the creativty to create awesome lyrics. I guess that I'd have to say that VNV Nation is a big inspiration for me, they're lyrics give out so many messages. ;3

But yeah.......if I wanted to be more known, then let the music-rippers share my music files. I'd only be a musician as a hobby and still be doing my sciences. I'm more of a graphic designer though.

And DONT get me started on art theivery (( in the sense someone takes your artwork and claims it their own ))

*side note*

I really like Josh Groban.  He has an amazing voice.  I first heard/saw him on PBS at Christmas time.  He was amazing.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I saw him in concert on August 8th..........I KNEW he would open with his song "Oceano" and he did. Made the perfect beginning to one wicked-spiffy show. ^^

  • 4 weeks later...

good question...what IS on my computer?

at first peek:

Cocteau Twins, Nina Hagen, Einstürzende Neubauten, Funker Vogt

FSOL, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Pizzicato Five

Project Pitchfork, The Orb, VNV Nation, Wumpscut

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

second glance:

1000 homo DJs, Apoptygma Berzerk, Nightwish, The Art Of Noise

Banco de Gaia, Lords of Acid, Skinny Puppy & Electric Hellfire Club

Leæther Strip, The Kelley Deal 6000, The Cult, Diamanda Galas

Pigface

I have just under 30GB of music. All either ripped from what myself, friends or family purchased.

Hmm...I'd say not more than 150 from (online) file-sharing.
