Repairing Win98se

Recommended Posts

The old Win95 have the option to repair itself from the CD but that feature was removed for Win98. A friend told me how to make Win98 repair itself but can't remember the trick. Something about going thru the add/remove program. Does anyone know this trick? I loaded the kodak software for my camera then loaded the software for a sandisk 8-n-1 reader. Problems began shortly after. IE exploding, Windows explores going poof etc. I removed the sandisk drivers but the problems are still there. I don't want to have to reload the comp again so any help would be appreciated.

I would just try reinstalling Windows 98 over your current installation. Basically, what it'll do is replace all of the system files but leave your registry/my documents/important files intact. DO NOT REFORMAT YOUR HARD DRIVE (at least, not yet). Win 98 sucks donkey balls. But that might at least get it in good enough shape to operate again.

Reinstalling over your current WILL rewrite the registry. Try the following.

• Go to the Control Panel

• Click on Tweak UI (Tweak UI is on the Windows 98 CD incase you need to install it)

• Find the Repair tab, using the arrows on the right to get to it.

• In the drop down box, select Repair System Files

• Click on Repair Now

My recommendation would be to get a diffrent OS since even Microshaft doesn't support this any more.

I went ahead and reloaded Win98. Wanted to be sure the sandisk drivers weren't going to be a problem. Already had everything backed up from the last reload so wasn't much of a problem to move a few files and reload it. It's just that I have so many programs to reload that it's a pain.

Huh. I've never had any problems with the old programs losing their settings, so I assumed the registry was intact. It's been such a long time, that I could definitely be wrong though. I would have used this as an opportunity to upgrade to a new OS as Dubh suggested.

In the future, you can re-install 98-ME OVER itself without damaging the registry by booting off a floppy, putting in the 98-ME CD and typing the following.

setup /p f /is /ie /iu /iv

</geek>

I have the cab files saved on my hard drive. Can I do it from them or do I actually need the cd?
