A Tech Support Dream Come True

Recommended Posts

So, all day I have to talk to customers. In my store and on the phone. I want to keep my customers calling and coming in... so I have to be nice. Smile, Nod, Fix the Problem, Take thier money. Over and over again all day. Anyone who have ever worked a support desk or retail knows some of my pain. If you have ever worked a small pc shop you know exactly what I am talking about.

The problem comes in when you realize the people you have to help are just that, people. People, when thier computers are not working, SUCK. Yet, you Smile, Nod, Fix the Problem and Take thier Money. All while never ever loosijng your cool. No matter how dense they are. No matter how much the annoy the piss right out of you.

Not Today.

Not with the "person".

I lost it.

After the 10min on the phone. After he had asked like 50 questions and cut me off after one word of my answer to each....

"Dude! Shut UP! I can't help you if you wont shut your mouth long enough for me to answer you. Now, if you can just listen to me, I will try help you. If you can't shut up, I'll give you the phone number to the computer shop across town and hang up. Can you do that?"

"Yes Sir."

"Good, now this is what you need to do...."

5min later...

"I thought I told you to shut up?"

An hour later he came in and bought a new video card.

That felt really good. My co-worker was in shock.

Sometimes ya gotta break the rules to get the right results...

I finally got a used harddrive I've been waiting for from a friend earlier this week, so yesterday I decided to put all the bits of my old computer back together with this new (to me) harddrive. It all goes back together without much fuss... I go to start it up and ... I get a few seconds of fan noise and then silence. Nothing... After doing a little research and head scratching... I figured it had to be hardware related. Sure enough, I discovered the processor fan was connected to the wrong pins on the motherboard. (There are two that are exactly alike, one on either side of the processor location.) That got me part of the way started up... still had an error concerning the floppy. (Which I didn't initially install) So I pulled one outta my main computer and once installed, it worked fine (After recovering and installing a new system.) This morning I just had to work out some silliness with the graphics card thinking there was more then one monitor.

Sorry to jack your thread Mark... I was just happy to fix it myself without too much sweat or blood involved. :-)

Mark I have to say I envy you.. In a way.. I mean I couldn't do it. I get so fucking annoyed just playing Mr. Fix-It with all of my friends. I'm probably the only person in my entire town (it's a small town but hey) that knows what the fuck they're doing with computers. I've been working with computers since I was 5. The best part is when someone asks me what is wrong with their computer and I try to tell them and then they ARGUE with me because they think they know how to fix it?! Then fuckin fix it yourself and don't bother me!

One of my friends wanted me to teach him how to work on / build computers.. I laughed and explained it's not something you pick up overnight and it's not something I have the time to teach you.

I just can't stand dealing with ignorant fucks when it comes to computer tech. I could never handle IT. Fuck that. Fuck that with a 10 foot pole. I'd rather be a closet nerd. I wish people would stop bothering me to fix their fucking pieces of shit.

And, I should really start charging people to fix their shit. I can't tell you how many computers I've reformatted in the last 2 years. Especially when I was in college, I was doing 3 reformats a week fixing fucked over piles of crap that are so bogged down with viruses and spyware. I suggest to most of these people to stay off the fucking porn sites. But ya know how that goes.. They gotta have their "free" (free is a relative term) internet porn. Whatever.
