heh... living in Flint or Gary would definitely be dangerous for me... I'd prolly kill myself within a month. Those are about the most depressing places imaginable.

But yeah, this is one of those things that's pretty meaningless unless you have detailed info about the ranking criteria. I'm wondering how they chose the cities-? Doesn't seem to be based only on population... there are cities missing that I know are bigger than some on the list.

Even narrowing it down to "violent crime" doesn't give the whole picture. There's a difference between a place where people are likely to jack some random stranger walking down the street, and someplace where people are just prone to shooting or stabbing friends, neighbors, and relatives during drunken altercations.

A few years ago I remember some sort of violent crime survey where Detroit was #1. Somebody's being a slacker! :laughing

I have a feeling the most violent parts of the city bring the statistics way up. (There are definitely a few places in or near Detroit where I wouldn't go, but for that matter there are places like that in most large cities).

The reason I kept asking

"Violent crime?"

Is because honestly, I would be surprised if that were the basis looking at the order of the cities on the list.

They could be including petty crimes and stuff like some ass stealing your laptop when you're not keeping an eye on it.

Or car break-ins.

FBI figures, so *probably* violent.

Probably. Not that I know or anything, because the article doesn't say.

So why is it so important to you that I accept subjective data without context? And how could it be SO difficult to find the figures that they compiled this list from?

Edit:

Notice how high Sterling Heights is on the list. It was actually number one some years ago, and you can thank my mom for that. She's head of the records department. According to her, it's not so much the actual "safety" of any given city (duh), as how the dataset is considered. As with every dataset, every research study, every survey, everything. A list like this doesn't tell us all that much without context.

These lists are compiled every year, by several different entities, and I can't remember ever seeing one where ratings for "safety" weren't based on violent crime statistics from the FBI. Other types of crime get thrown in if they'e talking about overall quality of life, or just crime rates in general- and even rankings of cities by "crime rate" are usually broken down into violent and nonviolent or property crimes. Knowing all that, I really don't see where it's so far-fetched to assume this particular list is based on violent crime.

just my .02
