Don't get me wrong - I absolutely love makeup, but it's pretty incredible how they take an ordinary woman and stretch her neck out to impossibly long lengths, shave her shoulders out of the picture and make her look like a completely different woman.

That's pretty disturbing. I mean, she looked really stunning after they did the hair/makeup, why'd they have to enhance her with the computer?

Well. Ok, I know, they did it because they were filming a commercial about the evils of advertising. <D But I've heard they do "airbrushing." I never thought they'd actually adjust face/neck proportions like that.

Yes, they definitely do. Not only face/neck but the entire body too.

A team did a seminar at my daughter's high school. It wasn't just about that, but also about how advertisers market cigarettes, etc. and general advertising tactics.

They showed photos of the model's face and body before and after the airbrushing/makeup/photoshop treatment and you would never know it was the same person when they were finished.

What is considered "airbrushing" now is pretty much everything altered on a computer. They seriously can ad and subtract, tint and fade anything.

There's really no point in having models anymore. You can't relate to them because what you're seeing isn't a real person.

I'm getting to love my big ass more and more with seeing this stuff around.

I would rather be a little overweight, and healthy, than skinny & feeling like I m gonna die if I dont eat like 3 cheerios a day....when i was in school i knew a girl that had such a bad eating disorder, that she only ate 3 cheerios every day ...till she collapsed from malnutrition...i hate how the media makes everyone think that they have to look like a model....& like yous said..they arent even real ppl anymore...........

Woah.

That was trippy.

I remember reading a while ago (sorry i don't remember the title of the book) that the typical runway model is 23% below what is considered a healthy body weight. Interestingly, at 25% below healthy body weight the Red Cross considers a person malnourished and often at that point tries to deliver nutrients to an area. How hysterical would it be to see some Red Cross volunteers handing out rice at the next Gucci show? heh.

I'm underweight for my age and height..... by at least 10 pounds, and if not 10, more like 20.

After the Uruguain model collapsed and died after her stroll down the runway, there's been talk of a ban on thin runway models. They basically said anyone with a body mass index less than 16% was considered too thin. Last time I checked, I was nearing that border, oddly enough. With a body mass index of 20%, even I smile when I see bigger girls looking gorgeous.

I already know there are a few things an advertiser can fix about my body.

My legs arent muscular, and my boobs probably arent big enough. And let's fix that untoned stomach.

Sorry, but I prefer the pin-up look over the stick look anyday.

So says Miss Underweight, I'd rather be HEALTHY than dying. Therefore, I'd pick meat on the bones over Mass-Graves-of-Auschwitz thin anyday of the freaking week.

I've seen this film before and this is why I like saying that I prefer my photos raw and unedited. Even if there IS editing done, it's kept at a minimal level. Patrick, aka PlasticPuppet, DID edit my photos in photoshop. However, I compared them to the raws..... basically, all he took out was the plug socket in the back. My body was not altered in any way. Maybe the tone adjustments, but my body was untouched.

My last shoot, with Rodney Castro, he happily gave me every photo, in raw format. NONE of them need editing! ALL RAWS and NO NEED for altering!

But alas, the world of advertising is a cruel and heartless world, laughing and pointing fingers at anyone with low self-esteem.

Thanks to the corporates, we are now all considered fat, overweight, ugly and undesirable.

Eh, fuck 'em.

Big props to Dove. I'm gonna have to start buying their products just to show support for the "real beauty" campaign... it kicks ass in all ways.

'm sure that ad was a real eye-opener for a lot of people. Wish I could hack a loop of that into some of those "Ana" sites. Although those poor deluded girls would probably just take it as a challenge to damage themselves even further. I was sooo glad when Madrid wouldn't let models who were below a reasonable weight for their body type to participate in the big season opener shows. Then the fashion industry had the nerve to whine that they were being unjustly blamed for the prevalence of eating disorders.

BF, the computer enhancement was not just something they did to emphasize the "evils of advertising". As Onyx said, major alteration of face & body proportions is standard procedure in advertising. They may have been limited to just "airbrushing" at one time, but not now that major tweaks can be done cheaply and easily with graphics ware. Look at ads where women are wearing jeans- do you really think there are that many women out there with that bizarre long-waisted body type? I'm always trying to explain to my students that what models look like in ads is not what they "really" look like. Some really warped ideas are becoming ingrained in society, not only about beauty but about what's "normal" bodywise.

Onyx, what org. was behind the seminar? I would really like to get in contact w/them.

I'm not sure. It was last year some time, but I'll ask my daughter tomorrow and see if she remembers who they were or has any of the materials that might have a name on them.

If you check the videos displayed right next to the actual movie, there should be one called "Killing Us Softly 3" which is also about the advertising industry and what it does to people.

I suggest you watch that one too.

I've long wished i was a girl in certain situations. One of them being the extreme makover. I've seen this in action in real life with a few female friends of mine and i was like GOD DAMN!! =D Especially if you throw in some figure altering sharp clothing.

These two lesbians girls that lived down the street from me when i lived in A2 that were basically like my 2 overly sexual moms and along with my friend paul introduced me to this whole Gothy/Andrgony scene really could pull off some amazing stuff. And i mean "normal" makeup and clothing , similar to what you see in the links onyx has there.

Honestly even though there is a lot of "cleaning up" you can do with a guy, the heavy application of hair/makeup/costume for girls is so over the top at times far beyond what you could ever do with a male. Mainly just due to the fact that "costume/makeup" that is clearly visible on men is not acceptable (other than at the club that is lol). Would be nice to have the option of basically creating a total facade that was acceptable in public. (once i finally surrendered to the cultural/evolutionary idea that looks matter *bows head in shame*)

Actually WTF am i talking about, like i would take the time unless it was a wedding or something. Takes me a freakin hour + to get ready NOW. Gone are the days when i would spend 3 hours getting gothed up just go go buy some books at borders.

Definitely.

thanks Faril... I remember seeing the original years ago... this one is even more intense.

BTW when I looked it wasn't next to the "Evolutions" frame but if you run a search at the top of the page, it will be in the first 3 hits you get

Anyone who thinks they aren't affected by advertising, try the experiment of going on a two-week media fast. I guarantee you will notice some definite changes in the way you view people and the world. You don't even have to cut out all media to notice it... even not watching any TV for a couple weeks will do it.

I watch very little TV but when I'm in a period when I do watch more, I start noticing that I always WANT stuff... not just desiring specific material things, but this constant nagging feeling that I should be out trying to get something. Maybe that's just me... I kind'a suspect not, tho.

My daughter wasn't able to remember who they were and she didn't have any materials from the seminar. If they happen to return this year I'll be sure to find out the details.

I ran across this & thought it was a good example. Look at how petite this woman is. You can tell by how short her legs are... and they're shorter than they look 'cos she's wearing heels. Now look at how long her torso is. No way is that natural, they've stretched her waist by (visual equivalent) 2-3".

So they either turned her into a grotesque mutant, or she's actually proportioned like that.

Either way, what a hideous face.

Thanks, I was trying to remember the name of that video. Back in college I saw Jean Kilbourne lecture on Killing Us Softly 3, and it was the first thing I though of when I saw that ad. Very interesting and disturbing.
