Fierce Critter
I woke up this morning with pretty severe pain in my lower back. This didn't overly concern me because I've had ongoing problems with a sore back in the morning for years. Saw a chiropractor for it and that helped for a while, but I stopped going. It's been pretty good for the past few months or longer. But this seems different. Ordinarily the "back pain" I typically get goes away once I'm up and walking around. But this isn't getting better. And I've realized it's actually more on my left side, than on my spine. It's not really on my right at all. I've been trying to ignore it and go about my business today, which entails a lot of bending over, squatting, etc. as I do some projects and housework. But at one point after squatting, I actually cried out upon straightening up it hurt so bad. That's not like me. And now that I'm sitting here, I'm realizing the pain is even radiating down my leg, hurts pretty bad actually in my thigh. I'm wondering possibly if this might be kidney, and not my back after all. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of pain, or kidney problems? Input, please. If this isn't better by tomorrow, I'm going to the doctor, if not the emergency room down the street. It's that bad. (And this happened overnight. Had a bad stomach yesterday, but nothing severe.)

Rayne
Sounds like a possible kidney infection ... or you threw your back out. Strained muscles suck. I've had so many after my car accident I'm on permanent perscriptions for pain and muscle relaxers. ... I've had the kidney infection caused back pain too ... feels much the same. BrassFusion
I sure hope it's not your kidney. Could be an inflamed sciatic nerve, maybe? That happened to me when I was 20 after I slipped and fell on some ice. Didn't start hurting till a week later, though.
Fierce Critter
WebMD indicates kidney. I have no associated urinary problems, at least not the kind I usually hear about when people talk about kidney infections. It's totally on my left. I did nothing in the past couple days to bring on any sort of back pain or strain. Damn, this hurts.

I was hospitalized in January (the freaking day after New Years!) for a horrible kidney infection that got into my blood and infected it. I was crying I was in so much pain. I never had any other symptoms other than the back pain. I never knew I had it.
pomba gira
Sounds like a kidney infection. A kidney infection isn't necessarily a sequella to a UTI... can be, but can also appear out of nowhere. And of course UTIs aren't always symptomatic, either. Feel better lovey! Troy Spiral (13)
Really not enough detail to guess at what it is. But if its both sides, lower back just above the hips is the suck-all spot for backpain confusion since it could be muscle or kidney issues. Both me and my mother have had both "back problems" and kidney problems there. (mine associated with too much drugs , hers with cancer) If you can stretch and (lightly!) massage the area without the pain intensifying the whole while (its gonna hurt a bit either way at first) but muscle/nerve problems usually get better after massaging/stretching that area for awhile. While the kidney problems might get a little better, generally the pain continues all the while your massaging that area. But still its pretty foggy unless your pissing blood or can remember specifically getting a "kidney punch" of one sort or another. Doctor is a good choice on this one. Fierce Critter
Diagnosis: Sciatica. If you don't know what it is, basically the sciatic nerve, the biggest in the body, runs down the spine, across the butt and down the legs. Sciatica is an inflammation of the nerve, and sometimes a pinching of it. We're not quite sure how it happened, what brought it on. I have prescriptions for Motrin and an antibiotic, and I have to go down the street to the hospital for a back x-ray. Other than that, she recommends rest with a heating pad, and says that it should go away in a few days. Fingers crossed. I'm glad it wasn't kidney. Though this is a potentially re-occurring problem I really hope doesn't linger or happen again.
