Kids may find teachers a tad more upset when they screw up on a test. The Dept. of Education just launched the first federal program that uses bonuses to motivate teachers who raise test scores in at-risk communities, awarding $42M this month to 16 school systems. Any fears that teachers might cook the books to score a typical $5,000 payoff? Not to worry, says Chicago's school chief, there are statistical analyses in place that spot testing irregularities, presumably better at catching Cheaters than those used in the past.

Damn, there's more to be worried about than just cheating. They already did shit like that for the MEAP when I was in school- they would spend weeks doing nothing else but "preparing" us for those goddamn stupid standardized tests so they could get their extra funding or whatever. At least I went to advanced science/math/tech for half the day and our teachers knew we didn't need to waste time on that shit.

Improving education in historically shitty districts (DPS, anyone?) can be a damn minefield...

OH I agree. My kids said there was nothing on that damn meap test that really helped them learn anything useful and they spent weeks on it......instead of something better for the kids......they just worry about funding.
