I still play magic on and off but i've migrated to Magic The Gathering Online. Its cheaper (by a factor of about 2X or more) and there are games / tournaments avail 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You can play 9th edition theme decks for free with no login if you just wana check it out. You can play the theme decks for free , forever, but its a bit of a large download, dial up users probably will take like 20 hours to D/L it. heh.

The online cards are quite valuable , and if your fairly good you can win matches to pay for the cards "faster" than you could in real life due to the fact that games are available 24/7. More matches, more cards, less money thrown away, and more actual playtime.

Also yes if you get full sets you can turn in the online cards for real cards. Which, the online versions are much cheaper in a generalized sense (but still quite valueable) trading is easier online as well. So you could theoreitcally get the cards for cheap online, either by straight singles buying, trading or winning tournaments and then trade them in for the more valuable "real" cards.

The online versions go up in value at a similar rate to real life cards, its just a mental hump to get over the idea that onlne cards arent "real".

Just since i've been playing, which isnt long at all , i've seen many cards go from a few dollars to 10 bucks each. Some of the earlier cards like unhinged land and such that are now OOP have skyrockted in value.
