RosyBlue
Does anyone know where I could find a pet millipede? I work at a pet store (Petsmart), but we don't carry them. My store doesn't even have the option of ordering them. I tried the exotic pet stores in the area without luck. The only place that has them is Petco. Now no offensive if anyone on here works there, but... I really hate Petco. I went to go see the millipede and it was covered in parasidic mites. I mean tons! And they were feeding it carrots and iceburg lettuce, which makes me wonder if it's healthy. I can't get one till after Christmas, but I'd still like to know where I could find one. Can anyone help? Yeah I called both of them and they don't have any. I did find some at House of Pets in my area, though. Hopefully they'll have some after Christmas. Fierce Critter
My husband saw a millipede at a pet store and was concerned about the mites. We asked the staffer about that, and it turns out they live a symbiotic relationship. They mites serve a purpose, actually. And supposedly, the milipede will suffer without them. And, by the way, ICK. I can't stand those things.
Vampyro
Hm, of all the exotic pets I've heard of people wanting... I never heard of this... It can't be one of those little things you find under a rotting log in the summer time can it?? Is it a bigger breed? If you want one more power too you but... I just don't want an amimal that needs parasites to stay alive? That's just um... weird

We asked the staffer about that, and it turns out they live a symbiotic relationship. They mites serve a purpose, actually. And supposedly, the milipede will suffer without them. And, by the way, ICK. I can't stand those things. I know about the beneficial ones, but there are also paracidic ones too. The one at Petco had paracidic mites on it. Hm, of all the exotic pets I've heard of people wanting... I never heard of this... It can't be one of those little things you find under a rotting log in the summer time can it?? Is it a bigger breed? If you want one more power too you but... I just don't want an amimal that needs parasites to stay alive? That's just um... weird It's similar to those. What you're thinking of could be one of two different kinds of "rolly pollies." The black ones that you'd find under rocks and logs are very closely related to the millipede I want. The one I want is a Giant African Millipede. That link there is for millipedes in general. The one I want is dark brown to black, about 10 inches long as an adult. The reason I want one is because I like bugs, they don't bite, they don't sting, they're very low maintanance, they're vegetarians, and they don't take up alot of space with their tank. They do secrete a nasty liquid, but it's usually only harmfull if you get it in your mucus membranes. There's not many bugs or animals that I don't like. cptdeath
exotic pets is something i enjoy alot. at one time i had a giant tank filled with a dozen scorpians. one time my uncles had a stripped knee turantula and a giant praying mantis. the fight was crazy. the spider lost. the praying mantis is by far the baddest insect ever. it actually gleans genetic material to produce offspring with like qualities of its selected prey. if you get a chance watch a scorpian eat or a praying mantis wich you'll never see. it will change your life. you see the obvious connection between arachnids an crustations. the praying mantis is far from arachnid in apperance and much more highly evolved. i hear millapeades are some of the worlds most toxic and venomous critters you can ever lose in your house. besides the scorpions and a spider i raised for my x i don't keep venomous animals. i would recomend house of pets or savvanahs. about mites if one animal has them an there actually so abundant that there openly visable in daylight don't even walk through that store or all the animals at your house will get them an you won't notice for a month or so. to get rid of them you need this thing that sits over the tank it's an aresol bug repelent it looks like an air freshener set it on the cage on the screan with a bowl over the top for two weeks or more an the mites will fade away. if you have reptiles they tend to breed in large concentrations around the eyes and in the eyes. mites suck even good mites should go. bug begone strip jr. or something it's like 10 or 14 dollars. oh and people are animals who need symbiotic parasites to survive. look at your eyebrows under a microscope ewww. the praying mantis was 14 inches in length it imeadetly grabbed about six crikets in one arm and ripped all there heads of with the other arm in one lightning quick motion. it was so bad. so the spideer a fully grown female walks out to see whats up. the mantis looked at it unwavering confident. the spider reared up on hind legs and sprung foward with an audiable noise i can't make. the mantis flicked its arm out and one of the spiders legs fell to the ground next to it. the spider landed just after its arm did barying fangs deep into the mantis. the 14 inch mantis flared its wings out (all 4 of em) and with a back hand fliked the spider across the cage. with the same arm it flicked out agian an part of the spiders right leg fliked off before it landed on the other side of the cage upside down. i notice the trail of web from the mantis to the spider. the spider reared up again bleeding missing a limb and a half the mantis stood fast with a melting hole in its chest. the mantis waves one arm in a slow circular motion toward the spider. as the spider lunged foward the mantis walked backward adding in the other arm and picked up speed then three limbs hit the floor. the spider manged to get web on the arms of the mantis or ot would have lost all its limbs in a fraction of a second. the mantis hoverd over the twitching spider. the spider sinks it's dripping fangs into the mantis's underbelly and it backs up. then a deathblow both arms one up one down and two pieces of spider hit either side of the cage. they took the mantis outside and put in a tree. it fell to the ground a few moments later dead. i don't approve of such iresponsable pet ownership to be so calis with a life your responsable for but it was cool to watch an i didn't know better i was a kid an they did it not me. the praying mantis kicks ass. unfortanetly such a predator requires a large range like a great white shark and will not survive more then a few days in captivity so little is really known about them. there is a couple thousand year old style of martial arts based on the mantis in my expeirence it allways beats the crane style.
