Bye Bye Detroit.....steven Returns To La

As most of you know I left LA a few years ago and never looked back.

But I'm going back next week on the 9th.

I got a call from Mom.

Nacho (my Grandfather, who's name is Atanacio but we call him "Nacho"...no shit) has cancer.

In his kidney, which they are removing while they explore to see if there is cancer anywhere else in the area. He's in his early 90's. Thats pretty old for advanced surgery but its a literal do or die situation.

So in talking to Mom at one point she says "Mijo, I dont know what to do"

Translation: Steven come home.

Mijo (Mee-Hoe) is sort of spanish slang, for "My Son".

When my mom starts getting serious she usually switches to spanish.

My grandfather is a cool old man, has seen alot, done alot, lived a very honerable life and can hold his head up in how he carried himself. So if the worst happens and he does not make it, I will not grieve the way you sometimes normally grieve. What I will do, is stand there amongst my cousins, many of which are hardcore career criminals and gang bangers, and lift a glass of Tequilla to him and say farewell. And consequently any typical mexican family life picture or thing you've seen on TV via Carlos Mencia or George Lopez will be going on EXACTLY as you imagine it and there will be me among it all, remembering with some serious depth, that I am a Latin man after all.

Man....family stuff is a trip.

And if he does pull thru the surgery, I want to be there when he wakes up, because they took my kidney too once, and I know exactly how he will feel and how to contend with it. And I want to talk to him about it before he goes under, in case he's scared. At that age, I'd be a little scared. Mom told me another thing about that too: "Mijo, Nacho has gotten really quiet"

Translation: Steven come home.

Brenda my love, I will unfortunately be missing you on the 9th, I'll be in the air on my way back where I come from, I bought my tickets yesterday. but toast me once (Tequilla is fine) if you remember, because I would have been there to see you at CC, but I have something that I have to do....

oh, and I've decided to tell only 2 people that I'm coming back to LA.

I DO miss people, but it's tough to feel the pressure of needing to visit when you have other things going on.

I will see my God Daughter Marcie though. She is in her mid 20's and is incredibly gifted and strong and beautiful and although she's not my flesh and blood daughter she has been "my baby" since she was a very little girl and next to Laura she knows me better than anyone on earth, through both my Lost years and beyond, she has seen it all and never lost faith and once had the teen audacity to call me a "Gentlemen", which therefore became the challenge of my life.....

And I might spend an evening in Hollywood, by myself, to walk around and make quiet peace with some things. And that's about it. The rest of the time will be with the Familia.

And that's the latest news in Camp Steven.

I'll try to check in while I'm gone.....

That really sux man, I lost my grandfather in August this year, my other grandfather had 2 strokes in October, and his wife, my grandmother, has just been diagnosed with cancer in the pancreas - primary or secondary they do not know yet, but it's bad either way. Good luck in L.A, it won't be easy, but it will be good to be among family.

Take care

It sounds like he has lived a full life, and one he can be proud of. I hope he recovers and has many more years. I'm sure he will be comforted to have you there, especially since you have been through the exact same surgery.
