Fierce Critter
OMFG - PSYCHE! I was in a McDonald's drivethrough today and thinking about Burger Chef! About how I believe they were the first place with a kids' meal with a toy. They always came with a burger, fries, drink, a chocolate sandwich cookie & a prize. There is at least one Hardees in the Detroit Metro area. My husband saw it while on a service run. I don't remember where he said it is. There is a Hot N' Now on Telegraph waaaay down in Monroe. Still open. The one on Eureka near Middlebelt is closed. The nearest Sonic is in Ft Wayne Indiana. We had them in NC, their slushies were particularly good. Jack in the box I haven't seen since my childhood here in Michigan. I seem to recall something called Borden Burger...

Fierce Critter
That's right. Burger Chef's were, for the most part, turned into Hardee's. And then, most of the Hardee's were turned into Tim Horton's. I was born in '68. So I grew up going to Burger Chef. One of my elementary school field trips was to Burger Chef. It was so exciting to see the freezer... ROFLMAO
LuluVox
Krystal and sonic (sonic is ok, Krystal ive never had) Krystal is just the White Castle of the South. Offer the same things, taste exactly the same, staple drunk-food, etc. Has any one noticed they are changing all the Rally's over to Checkers? It's about time! They're all Checkers down South (I'm from Georgia). I got up here and was like, "Uh, that looks like a Checkers, but it says Rally's -- what the hell?" Also, Hardees are known as Carl's Jr. in other parts of the world -- west coastish, mostly. And according to Wikipedia, the company that owns Carl's Jr. and Hardees did indeed buy out Burger Chef. Yes, I am at work, stone-bored -- can you tell?
HipsterDufus
I don't know if you guys had them on the east side of the state, but we had Rax over here. That place was awesome. Arby's-style roast beef, but it tasted WAY better.
mallochai
Yeah... Hardee's was my favorite when I was living near Benton Harbor. Then there was that whole going off red meat thing... but prior to it, the Frisco burger was fucking delicious. Carl's Junior is pretty huge on this side of the country (west side!). The thing about it... Carl's Junior and Hardee's are actually companies set up by Pillsbury to LOSE them money so that they don't have to pay as much in taxes. Tricky, eh? Draco1958
There's a Hardees on Coolidge north of 11 mile. I ate at the one on the Ohio Turnpike Sunday on my way to Cleveland. There is also a Sonic's in Columbus Ohio. Anyone remember Red Barn??
pomba gira
The thing about it... Carl's Junior and Hardee's are actually companies set up by Pillsbury to LOSE them money so that they don't have to pay as much in taxes. Tricky, eh? Burger Chef was the same thing- owned by PepsiCo I believe. I worked at one across from the old Olympia stadium when I was in high school. Ugh, I still remember how those hot-ass polyester doubleknit uniforms retained the smell of congealed burger grease for days. Only bright spot was being able to trade burgers for pot when I worked the evening shift. I remember a rumor that Jack-in-the-Box used kangaroo meat in their burgers. Even as a child I wondered how kangaroo meat could possibly be cheaper or easier to get than beef, but I guess most people didn't use that kind of logic 'cos the chain had to take out full-page newspaper ads denying the kangaroo allegations. Red Barn used to have the nastiest all-you-can-eat chicken imaginable... their chickens must've been raised on Zug Island or something. I also remember a couple White Castle competitors- White Tower and Top Hat. All over Detroit when I was a cub... back when McDonald's & BK were still trying to avoid the city.
