More to the point... I like Steven and Pomba... the color of thier skin has nothing to do with the people inside unless they let it.

how to put this thought into words...

best I can do...

I don't let/allow racism and predjudice to affect my actions or words... even when those same evils come from inside me.

Steven is Steven

Pomba is Pomba

they are not "that mexican guy" or "that black girl"

thier my friends... and they just happen to have a different racial heritage than I do... why would I let such a trivial thing affect how I feel about them? Why would a friend force me to be in a situation that would illicit those thoughts?

actually, that's what the first post was about. something like...

I feel that culture- not race- is the thing to celebrate. There is no "white" culture, nor is there a "black" culture. There are varieties of European, African, Asian, Polynesian, Hispanic, and American cultures AND subcultures for us to choose from. Why limit our cultural celebrations to white and black, and why praise some skin colors and hair types over other physical traits?

It is in the best interest of all of our cultures to remove the insulation that says only "whites" may celebrate European culture and only "blacks" may celebrate African culture.

so by MY logic and beliefs, steven can celebrate his culture by inviting YOU out for tacos and coronas, and you can celebrate YOUR culture by inviting HIM out for a night of bach, beethoven and brahms at orchestra hall.

i don't see how you could have "white" pride any more than steven could have "light brown" pride. skin color ain't it. at all.

dude, most of what you were doing seemed to be bitching. say what you will about providing "references" and stuff. all you gave us were stories about racist assholes. yeah, we know it's out there, but what do you propose to DO about it? i actually have a plan, and it seemed like you were arguing against it.

and even if you turn white, NEVER get a jetta. at least not an early model. they suck.

I suppose that's fair enough.

I didint produce a list of what I "do"...or have "done", that's also true, but it seems (or would seem?) a bit self elevating. Perhaps I thought you would just give me the benefit of the doubt.

If it helps, I guess I can rant off a list of foolish "check me outs" but you allready know certain things about me Brass:

I DO get involved in other people's lives and have doen that for years. I HAVE given of myself for the benefit of others, including physically (who wants a kidney?) and monetarily (cars, shelter, groceries, toys, clothes, furniture, yardwork, housework, gruntwork). I am both a mentor and a mentoree, andn I promise you that both arrangements are often very uncomfortable. I DO have a very wide range of intimate friends of varying religions, philosophies, colors, sexuality and lifestyles that I share a great deal of personal time and information with to include bar romps, road trips, family trips, weddings, deathbed AIDS intercessions (try that sometime, it's both frightening and severely humbling to pray with a person covered in oozing sores), divorce counseling, people trying to kick junk, barbecues at Camp Steve-O, etc. etc.. I HAVE gone to other countries (mexico) and worked in compromising situations (Orphanages) in order to understand with greater depth. I've eaten more soul food in Watts and Compton than you'll ever consume in your life and I've been to more black revival fish fries than you'll ever know and doesent everything I just said sound silly and set me up for ridicule? Lots of people do wonderful things. But lots of people dont. In fact most people, dont.

Sorry if I sounded like I was bitching. I would never reccomend to anybody to invest of themselves if I likewise had not done the same. I really do live the lifestyle that I claim Brass, and I beleive that real change has a price but I've seen it happen many times. I was trying to pick at a scab here, because I was trying to push the boundry a bit.

Look.. I'm the guy who talked to Steven about the fact that I have issues with Mexicans. I do everything I can to overcome those issues and never let them come out openly. I suppress them.. invalidate them internally... which gets really damn hard when Steven throws his mexican heritage into a conversation where really.. it has no bearing. I never feel the need to point out how white I am.. why does anyone else have to point out how brown they are?

told you before, I respected your transparancy on this struggle. I actually received it as a gift, that you would share it with me, thought it was pretty gutsy, and gave me reason to hope.

you are a rarity by the way. Very few people would be so up front.

as for my Mexican Heritage coming up in a conversation where it has no bearing....(had to chuckle on that one a bit)

First: I process things thusly, being that I am what I am:

A) from a male perspective, being that I am a male.

B) from a Christian perspective, being that I am a Christ follower

C) from a Latin perspective, being that I am Mexican

I'd have to go back and re-read all my junk (and who has tiem for that???) but with the exception of some semi serious points I was trying to make, I'd assume that most of my Mexicanisms are said in jest. Its sorta like a goth being all...."Gothy"

Dont let it bug you. that's a big waste of time and a replay of some very old tapes.
