I agree with some of the comments left at the bottom of the article: If they need more revenue tax road use (mileage) or increase taxes on larger/heavier vehicles which are the ones doing more environmental and road damage, anyways. For someone to criticize fuel efficiency is pretty short sighted.

That's kind of the equivalent of saying "the problem we have with stem cell research is it could end up putting wheelchair manufacturers out of business".

"Contemporary and forward looking", my ass. The "contemporary and forward looking" approach would be to start brainstorming alternate ways to generate the potential lost revenue. The two that Marc mentioned are the most obvious, but I can think of at least 3 or 4 more without even trying... so I don't see why it's such a stretch for Mr. Econ Prof/Oil Company Shill.
