Just A Thought

So I was sitting with my girlfriend and we were talking about how terrible city club was and it hit me, why doesn't someone around here just open up another club in downtown detroit like cityclub? As long as it is cleaner (which should not be hard) and such I am sure it would do alot better then CC and if done right could actually turn a profit. Just shooting out ideas here. I have always wanted to open a nightclub and are infact going to school right now to learn how to so maybe if I get the right feedback and the funds (which would be the hard part) maybe I will... Maybe I will....

Again, just a thought.

Many have tried, but they usually don't las too long. Getting a loan for a nightclub and having it end up a success in a downtown setting is almost impossible, basically pulling in enough cash flow to pay the rent/mortgage while being able to make something affordable is well simply not going to happen (anyone remember club blue?).

City on the otherhand doesn't have a lot of the issues that a new nightclub would have. First of all it has an almost legendary status in the underground as it was opened in the late 70's as a punkrock club, and has changed progressivly over the years. Second, the owner of the club also owns the whole city block (as well as several other blocks in the city) so he doesn't have to pay off anything, it's virtually all going into the business. And on top of all of that, they virtually do nothing as far as club upkeep, they barely ever clean or replace faulty equipment, and yet (until recently) people keep flooding in every weekend. This might change soon however as now in other big city establishments (CBGB's) are going down despite the history. The suburban clubs are actually giving it a run for it's money (Luna, Mephistos, Nectos...)

Anyway... that's why.... IMO

I have always hoped someone would buy that castle building around the corner (I forget what it's called), open up a kick-ass goth club and the Ramada would be condemned and demolished.

Some of the smaller ones do okay but I doubt another large club would make it unless City closed, because of many of the points mentioned in Phee's post.

Until then, I'll probably keep going to City when I do go out, because that's where the people I know are.

i loved nectos. i've been in filthier than the ramada. my own little "first club" (everyone has a first club that they will defend untill the death, i think thats why city club kept going in its state) was much worse, heck the couches had to be scruitinised before sitting, as the cliantelle werent picky on where they fucked or how they fucked (assume the worst mental image and tone it down a little) but the booze was cheap, the songs were played reasonably and it was allways amusing to watch the scabby uber-elitist "this is our club" goths fight over the darkest corner.

tried running a club once, but the club owners would only give us wednesday nights, the layout was better than the current club and it was clean with alcoves (us welsh love our alcoves to hide in) and sound blocking barriers to main bar. unfortunatly, wednesdays precede a thursday, a work, collage and uni day (dragging my ass into lectures on a thursday after arguing with owners wanker of a son who wanted dibs on EVERYTHING including the playlist and the DJ of his choice, esp as on his 2nd night he ran out the club sobbing as he was playing dance music in a rock club and i had a spat the dummy out at him)

The only way the club scene will change is if people quit worrying about their social groups. I've asked people for months why they never went to Mephisto's- the real reason- "My friends all go to CC." I get that answer with everyone. Want to see a club besides City succede- go hang out there instead. I heard on Saturday that some of the Mephisto's DJs are going to break off and start a new club. They need to start recruiting popular people now or just pay to fly Brenda and Head Wreck in every weekend for a while.

so you just described city club but with cheap booze and perhaps a decent sound system and/or better music.

bleh.

i've been going to mephisto's a little more lately. that place is really cool, just wouldn't go there on a saturday night because of all the people i know at city. and city is just a "bigger" atmosphere. i mean, there's a DANCE FLOOR, actually.

like necto. but not as far away for me.

(i wish i lived closer to necto)

  • 5 weeks later...

The things that City Club has over the other clubs is the ultra large dancefloor (the ones at The Ritz and Necto are the only ones that come close) the late hours (closes at 4:30) and the fact that it is an established mainstay in the alternative underground scene. The last reason is the main reason people still go I think.

I just think it's funny that people don't like CC because it's filthy, which it is, of course, and always has been. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was filthy when it first opened, too. The couches probably came pre-fucked on. Maybe they ordered them special from Japan. But, you're GOTHS, people! A little dirt (and rampant air-borne illnesses) shouldn't deter any of us! Goths are supposed to like the dark, dank corners of the world, and well, I'm sorry, but bacteria like those corners, too, and they were there first.

So suck it up!!!

You signed your 'Goth 4-Ever' card, and filthy clubs was in the fine print on the back. :wink

I agree. You kids are so squeamish. Someday Auntie Hille will tell you about the Freezer Theater, which made City look like a cruise ship disco. Or the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco... if you passed out there, they tossed you on the floor in this dank corner by the bathrooms.

LEGENDARY URBAN ALT CLUBS ARE FILTHY BY DEFINITION. It's part of the package, get used to it or go back to the 'burbs!

I actually talked to Mike, (owner of CC), about that. Apparently many have tried to buy that building but the city won't let it go because of its historical significance, however the city is basically broke and can't afford to restore it and turn it in to anthing.

Ive heard that the building has a price to it so im sure it could actually be bought

but as far as actually becoming a club and outdoing CC thats somewhat doubtfull

sadly the fact remains that CC being so dirty is part of its charm

if the did a sudden clean up of the place and changed it around to what would pretty much be a diffrent place and setting would all of the people who have been going for years on in want to still go?

somehow i dont think so people dont like change and CC remaining the way that it has for so long is the reason why people return there week after week

even when people do stop going for some amount of time its based on avoiding people or some other amount of drama but never because of the club itself

Wait- we're talking about the same "the city" that caused the Hudson's building to be razed after being presented with several viable and potentially profitable plans for restoring/developing it (with other people's $$)? Gotta be more to the story than that, even granting that the current regime seems to have marginally more regard for historical significance than previous ones.

Listen to this woman, she knows that of which she speaks.....

I've never been to CC, but any "Legendary" (by the way Black Flag used to play the Mabuhay Gardens no???) club I've ever been to has always been a filthy dive, just a famous one, including the Rainbow, the Roxy, The Whisky, The Viper Room, Gazarris, Madam Wong's, English Acid, the Troubedor, etc etc etc

Sure, it's dirty. But I can't say that I don't like going. It's where I catch up with a lot of you. I just won't drink there, and try NOT to pee there.
