roads were surprisingly good today, considering the snwostorm that came thru last night... the sky was a brilliant blue, the sun was full and strong, the clouds had this beautiful rainbow sheen to them, (looking thru my sunglasses) and the swirling snow made little sparkling faeries dance in front of my face... it was a really nice visit...

We shared VD over Mexican.

No, not Steven, this OTHER Mexican.

It's a restaurant actually, and it's right in my neighborhood.

I had tacos.

He had burritos.

And I drank a raspberry margarita, cuz nothing says VD like a pink margarita!

And, because we're social butterflies, four of our friends joined us up there. I love VD.

i stayed in bed and watched weird shows about marriage - fat fiancees, russian brides, american soliders and korean women. i say weird because well it was weird. in the last one the USO had "bride school" for the korean women in which they taught them things like table manners, how to make thanksgiving dinner and you know the essentials like stove top stuffing and campbell's soup mix. the fat fiancees one was people in uganda i believe it was? the hima people fatten their women before they get married. basically they make them drink a gourd full of milk every hour and sleep for several months. the fatter the more beautiful they think they are. they equated it to cows. that a fat cow was a better cow, just like a woman. and something like cows are equal to women. :p

when i see stuff like i did yesterday i am SO thankful i live in america. ;)

We didn't go out or do anything "special"... just had a nice romantic evening at Tokagemaru's place... exchanged gifts (I got Lolita Lempicka perfume, he got 2 pairs of silk boxer shorts & a book about breasts) & snuggled. Very nice but the most wonderful part was just having someone special to be with on Valentine's Day after 5 years of being alone (& 2 before that of being as good as alone). Remembering how sad & lonely I was last year made it even more of a blessing.

That's one of those cultural things that doesn't translate well... the idea is that cattle & a desirable woman are both measures of wealth, i.e. an asset to the family they belong to. So the comparison with a cow is not a pejorative as we would think, equating a woman to livestock... rather it stresses the value of the woman to the family. It is difficult for us to "get" this because (a) in modern western societies the family is a consuming rather than a producing unit, and (b) our focus is on the individual rather than the family as primary social unit. So the idea of an individual's value to the family being so important is alien to us on a few different levels.

"Fattening room" traditions are also demonstrators of the wealth of the bride's family... being able to keep a family member totally non-productive while giving them enough food for 2 people for a few months at a time shows that they are people of means. I prolly don't need to add that the bride's ability to gain weight quickly is a demonstrator of her health, fertility, and all the other related stuff that "beauty" is almost always an indicator for.

when you've been togethor as long as Lola and I have, you tend to bi-pass alot of surfacy valentines schmutz and get right to the nitty gritty of what Valentines day is REALLY all about:

Bucca De Beppos.

Beskettis.

With meatballs.

oh hell yes.

Dessert: tiramisu, the good kind, not that out of the box nasty stuff.

Red Wine.

gotsta have the red stuff.

and then coffee with dessert.

then back to the Chez Steven for more dessert......

That sounds a lot like the day i had yesterday, /sub bucca di beppo with this "waves" place in st. clair shores.

It was like cuban/spanish/mexican/hawaiian/seafood. It didn't know WHAT the hell it was. The ambiance pissed me off. The food was pretty good though.

And there was much bowling. Best valentine's i've ever had, honestly =)

Since I was on day 2 of my usual 4 - day cold, consisting of a constantly running nose and going through about a box and a half of tissues, I didn't do much.

I made myself a pretty red heart necklace the days prior, with a matching pair of earrings. I should have worn them in bed with my white nightshirt.

Jon couldn't get to work due to snow and our crappy S-10. So he ended up going out to get me soup from a local diner, a box of Puffs Plus tissues (even with those, my nose will be torn apart by the end of this thing) - and a card and a big heart-shaped box of Russell Stover candies, my favorite. :)

I haven't touched the chocolates yet. My sense of taste has shut down for at least another half day or so. :(

Back to bed. Snif.

Best Valentine's Day - ever! Seriously, it was. I spent a wonderful evening with a wonderful man that I love deeply...

A wonderful man??

Who is this guy?

And while we're on the subject,

did you have said wonderful evening before or after you and I spent time together.

I can't compete with wonderful men.

My goal is to just beat average. :wink

Did you totally skip the "WITH" part in my statement?

I had a wonderful time WITH you (you being the wonderful man I was referring to in my previous post).
