Hello all. I just found this site and signed up today. I'm new to the Detroit scene, having moved to the area from NJ. I'm just starting to look for local clubs, concerts, etc...

I'm happy to have found this board as there seem to be a lot of intersting people on it as well as great information regarding the local Gothic scene.

Glad to be aboard.

Blake

Thanks for the friendly welcome everyone.

A bit about myself, hmmm...

I would probably say if any of you saw me on the street you wouldn't think I'd be into the goth scene, as I really don't dress it nor do I have the look. I tend to dress pretty casual, jeans and tee-shirt to sweater. I usually have a flat top, though recently I shaved it bald to see what it looked like. I liked it but am growing it back out again. It's probably because I was always too heavy for anything that looked good. Now that I lost a lot of the weight maybe I'll try some things out.

Musically my interests run the gambit from Goth (obviously!) to Folk to Heavy Metal to Industrial, etc... Just about the only things that I'm not into are country and rap, neither do anything for me. My favorite artist is Tori Amos, not goth I know but I love her.

I'd also say that I prefer bands with a female vocalist. My friends joke that it's just because I'm attracted to the various singers, that may be the case in some instances I guess, but it has more to do with the fact that I find the female voice more appealing. The female voice just sounds more interesting, if that makes sense.

One thing I'm looking forward to locally is seeing Hungry Lucy in May at the Labrynith. The Labrynith site actually lead me to this community.

So while on the topic of female musicians, can you all recommend any local groups that I might enjoy? Back in NJ I had a local favorite that I saw in concert many times, sometimes the local bands really are shockingly good. Back there it was Tapping the Vein (NJ/PA band).

Thanks again everyone for the welcome.

Hi Blake,

As for local band suggestions id point you over to the music forum, i know to many of the artists involved in many local bands and tend to bow out of the "local band critique" at least online. But youll probably find a lot of good suggestions around, as well as find people more qualified than i to make suggestions about "detroit area bands".

Probably my strongest suggestion as to "the scene" would be, if you have the time start comming to our regular weekly "DGN Night" at city club (sticky thread in the nightlife section every week about it) as well as just poking aorund the various forums here.http://www.detroitgothic.net/index.php?showforum=5 I along with several other DGNers are down there every saturday pretty much. Hunt one of us down and you'll be "in the scene" very rapidly via the "Blake this is X , X this is Blake..." introductions that will most likely ensue.

Many of us dont nessisarly "look the part" of goths, so if thats a concern, dont let it be. Especially with DGNers, we are a very friendly and welcoming lot for the most part.

At any rate, welcome, glad you found the place, hope you stick around, and if you know anyone else that might like the board, drag em kickin and screamin on over as well.

I recommend Ether Aura. They are a fairly new local band and have 2 songs on the DGN COmpilation CD. Pick up a copy for yourself, it is only $7.50. (shameless promotion)

BTW, Welcome. I very much enjoy female vocalists too. Mostly because I like to sing along and I just don't sound right singing to Rob Zombie.
