Whos Actually From Detroit

i lived in detroit from the time i was born til i was about 16 then i moved back again when i was 18 then moved for a few months... back to detroit again... away, then back again. i did that a LOT over the years. lots and lots of moving and always back to detroit.

a lot of the time when i lived out of detroit i lived in cities that were just a few blocks from detroit (like grosse pointe, harper woods)

i have now been out of detroit without moving back for the past 6 years. and then i only was staying there for a few weeks so that doesn't really count i guess ;) the last time i REALLY lived in detroit was about 9 years ago i guess.

i guess i could have just answered this question with a yes or no. no i don't live in detroit, yes i used to and for most of my life thus far. :p

i believe i have said this before but:

i always think it is funny when someone says they are from detroit but don't actually live there and never have. i never tell people i am "from detroit" i don't even say i live by detroit even though i am just several blocks away from it. not because i don't want to be from detroit, i'm just not anymore.

and i think i told this story before too:

i was at a basketball game once with someone and these guys asked us where we were from, she said "detroit" and they were like "oh yeah, we live in detroit. where at in detroit?" she said "harrison township" :p

A lot of us when asked where' we're from say "Detroit" because people are more likely to know where Detroit is than, say, Taylor, Allen Park, Warren, etc.

Similarly, my husband says he's from Daytona Beach, even though he's actually from Ormand Beach, which is right next to Daytona.

And that's done across the country. Not strictly a Detroit phenomenon.

As for me, been a downriver rat my whole life. Lincoln Park, Taylor, now Wyandotte. I have partied, stayed the night, rehearsed, performed, got drunk, worked, and many other things actually in Detroit over the years, but never actually lived there.

My parents were born in Detroit and lived there until their 20's. A handful of relatives still live there.

I always find that annoying even tho I'm really trying hard to get over all my city vs. suburbs prejudices.

As for me, born & raised in Detroit (Boston-Edison area), & have bounced between there & here (Lansing) most of my adult life, except for the 5 years I spent in the SF Bay area.

i think that is fine when you are out of town or for people who are not familiar with michigan in general. but when you are talking to someone else who is from here and knows cities/areas i think it is silly to say you are from detroit if you are in harrison twp like that girl i know did. ESPECIALLY to people who live in detroit like these guys did.

exactly. I say I'm from "L.A." but I've never lived in the city limits itself, even though LA is freaking vast. Still, if you've spent the majority of your time in the Hollywood/Pasadena/Glendale/Santa Monica/Venice/etc etc etc area like I have, you say your from LA. If your south of the 60 freeway toward the beach communities (where I was born in La Habra) your from The OC. If your out in the high dessert or past the 215 freeway then your from the 909 or from Ontario or whatever. If your up in Tujunga or Tarzana or those parts your from The Valley.

every region has its own flavor.

I've never actually lived in Detroit. Been in the metro-area almost 2 years.

I tell people who live outside the general area that I'm from Detroit, and I tell people here that I used to live in Lansing, when I never actually did. It makes life easier, and most people don't care exactly where you live anyway.

I think that covers it :fun:

I LOVE Detroit!

It's so funny. So many people are SO excited for the kids and I. We have some really great things happening to us. And Detroit is one of them. I have met and made some of the nicest friends here. Most are actually nicer than the ones here in Baltimore. Frankly, even though we'll be living in Royal Oak, it's all the same to me. And I cannot wait.
