Im going to be in my dads wedding in may, i have to go out and buy all new makeup because. . .well my collection consists of black eyeliner, maybe a few really dark eyeshadows and past that im pretty much hopeless. Does anyone know of a company that might make something that would be appropriate but maybe something i could mix and match to wear again? As far as price my dads paying for it so its not to much of an issue but at the same time the makeup i typically get, lasts me forever cause i rarely wear it. Thoughts?

If you didn't want to have to buy new make-up, maybe you could get your make-up done for that day and not be stuck with things you aren't going to use later on.

What sort of look are you going for? The typical "wedding make-up" look, or can it be a little flexible? That might help answer your question.

i thought about that but there isnt anyone that can do it in the area that im going to be (very small town). i have friends that could do it for me but that doesnt help much when im going to be 3 hours away for a weekend. i think my theme (since they told me to do whatever i want for the most part) is going to be kind of 50s. this is my dress and im thinking im going to get extensions and do pin curls (i think thats what theyre called) and then rolled up on the side. so its pretty flexible as long as its not just black. the only advice she could give me was i could use her makeup and have her do it for me but shes uber tan and wears all browns/tans/neuterals and those would look HORID on me because im so white. the only thing i really have to go on is that its a black and white wedding with small (very small) purple accents. :doh

this sucks, im so not girly

oh yea and i need a good blush color to cause im lost on that. this is me so that you have an idea of my skin tone

I like your hair idea. I'm pretty pale too, so most blush looks dumb on me. The best way to figure out what color blush will look good on you is to pinch your cheeks. I would also advise against shimmery blush because that makes most people look oily.

You are absolutely beautiful, so I wouldn't do too much make-up because that will take away from your natural look. With the wedding being black and white, that leaves a lot of room to play with different colors, and with the mention of purple accents, I would say to stay away from purple make-up. Well, maybe, depending on the shade of purple.

Is the ceremony going to be in the morning, afternoon, or night? The later in the day it is, the darker make-up you could do (without being black). You can still use black eyeliner, and just off-set it with a lighter eye shadow. You could do gray, which you could mix with your other things later. Silver could even work.

I don't know...Brenda will know! hehe

good luck!

And if I haven't said so yet, MAC.

Boys who wear fake eyelashes work there, so you know that shit's good.

I don't know how much time you want to spend on this, but all of the makeup counters at the department stores will do free make-overs, and of course give you a listing of the products that they used. So, tell them what you're looking for, have them do your makeup, wear it around for a day to make sure it doesn't run, or make you break out or any of that, and then go back and buy it!

For my own wedding, I did that at the clinique counter. In that case, money WAS an issue, though, but I was so very clever...I went during bonus time and got a Clinique bonus for basically each item that I bought and then sold the bonuses on Ebay, so in the end my makeup cost like $10. But without selling it on Ebay, it would have cost close to TWO HUNDRED! Then again, I bought like EVERYTHING.

As a former MAC artist, I can say with all honesty that it's NOT all that. The only decent items are the Fluidline liner, the shadows, and the Lipglass. And even then, you can find better in less expensive lines.

I'm pretty much in the minority here. But as I don't have a lot of $$ to spend on makeup, I do well with over-the-counter stuff you can buy at any wal-mart.

Brenda sounds like she's got you covered. But if you want some advice on specific products to pick-up if you just want to go the Maybelline, Revlon, Max Factor route, I can tell you my favorites.

And, holy cow, I just found a website all about 50's make-up and hairstyles. Check it out: http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/fashion-wh.htm

Even when I can afford it, which I can't these days, I have a deep aversion to paying retail for almost anything. You can find department store & boutique lines on eBay for a fraction of the retail cost... including sample-size containers of the MAC pigment shadows. I get all my Urban Decay and Iman stuff on 'Bay.

(I know I sound like a makeup snob... I'm really not... but... I like very intense & unsubtle color, and drugstore lines just don't provide that on darker skin. For example, none of the big drugstore names has a dark purple lipstick that actually looks dark purple on me)

I think that would be perfect on you... you would want to go with subtle eyes and red mouth

Sally's Beauty Supply sells Palladio... I love the stuff & I can wear it for anything - hope that helps ;)

love their brushes... affordable & pretty good quality

some of that Savvy stuff at Sally is nice too- they have a to-die-for cake eyeliner which is not an easy thing to find these days

oooook next question, am i more of a dandelion or a peach?

also what can you tell me about lip stains?

Lip stains can dry your lips, want to be sure to use gloss or moisturizer with them. Don't know that a stain would really work with the '50s look, but will defer to Brenda (or anyone else who actually knows what they're talking about!) on that one!

I was enamored with lip stains for some time. I still keep a couple bottles around.

Indeed, they can be drying. And they're not particularly hardy - they fade quickly throughout a day of wear.

Also, if you have any trouble at all with bleeding (lip color moving from your lip to the skin/face around them), they're not for you.

If you're going to go the retail route, I highly recommend Maybelline Superstay Lipcolor. Brenda recommended it, and upon her suggestion, I tried it. It's FANTASTIC. It will stay on your lips for 8 hours or more, it's softer than other all-day lipcolors, and they have a couple reds that are suited for the 50's look.

A close second is Cover Girl Outlast. I used them until I tried the Maybelline, and still use one of their discontinued, deep red colors.

Kevyn Aucoin was godlike... a true bright spirit. Face Forward is a work of genius. After I read it I cried because he sounded so wonderful & I would never get to meet him (yeah, OK, I was sappy even before the falling in love thing).

I just wonder who has control of his estate. ISTR he didn't want a signature line of makeup or tools because he hadn't found enough stuff that would meet his standards... & I'm pretty sure this line didn't launch while he was still living. Could be wrong, though.
