Disturbing Yet Brilliant Movies

Recommended Posts

Movies you might not want to watch again... but they can be pretty fascinating as well as give you trouble sleeping...

The film "Bully" by Larry Clark: Teenage suburban evil apathy at it's worst... creeps a person out... Same guy who directed the film "Kids"

The film "Happiness" directed Todd Solondz... strangely enough billed as a "drama/comedy" it's disturbing

because it actually makes 2 dimentional cultural boogymen into actually into 3 dimensional people.

"La Pianista" (The Piano Teacher) directed by Michael Haneke, nothing like some self mutilation and hot for teacher in French to make you feel.... strange...

"Begotten" directed by E. Elias Merhige, a dialogueless metaphysical gorefest that seems to stretch your brain and spirit.

I have more... I would like to hear about yours.

Eraserhead - David Lynch. Ive never felt so alone watching a movie. Totally enthralling. Very spooky.

I made the mistake of watching Eraserhead alone, in a huge dark house, after drinking half a bottle of wine at three in the morning. DOH!

Recently, I saw a French Film called "Demon Lover" (it doesn't appear to have a french title though). I watched it while lying on the futon at seven a.m. on a sunday, with sunlight peaking in through the curtains. It still disturbed me. It was full of backstabbing business people, sex, porn, anime, bondage, and violence. And Connie Nielson, who is GORGEOUS.

I found eraserhead to be tedious and uninspiring. It gave me the feeling he tried too hard to create a dark, artsy, shocking film.

Requiem for a Dream, that bothered me

That sums up my impression of Eraserhead. My brother insisted I watch it when he was in film school and very excited about it. It bothers me though when other people see profund meanings and I only see disjointed weirdness.

Perhaps I just didn't get it. ?

No, no....there is a meaning...you can find plenty of websites online explaining the meaning. Something relating to suicide and such. Even after finding out the storyline and the meaning of all the symbols in the movie, it still sucks.

You gotta remember, this film was made in the same time period all the abortion and womens' rights stuff was going on....and drugs...and a sort of 'questioning' of the church and faith.

Fantastic Planet

Chec-French animation collaboration from the early 70's. Utterly bizarre and ahead of its time (but not too far.)

The Holy Mountain

Alejandro Jordowsky's big budget psychodelic satirical odyssey funded by Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

However, these two are much more disturbing and strange rather than brilliant.

The Holy Mountain is fascinating... but a little hard to sit through

    • I am currently floored.   FedEx did a massive 6 box delivery to the wrong address.  I had an autoship order scheduled to arrive before this past weekend.  Nothing showed up.  I contacted the order site and they had a link for the order...a photo of all my boxes thrown in the snow and up the sidewalk of a residence that was not mine.   You would think that at some point, the driver would have looked at the delivery address after they kept throwing box upon box at this location with no shelter from the elements.  They didn't even knock on the door to inform the residents that massive 65+ pound boxes were left all over their walkway.  Nope.  Just dumped them, took a photo as they were walking away and left.   I wonder what the person who found all of those misdelivered boxes must have been thinking when they saw them.  Maybe they kept everything to use, distribute or sell.  No idea.  No claim was filed on that end as of yet.   Fortunately for me, one of the sites that I ordered from, replaced everything at no extra cost.   Unfortunately, now I'm concerned for the other items yet to be delivered.   Needless to say, I'll be watching my notifications like a hawk.
