Playstation from old to new

Anyone else still play PS1 games?

We got our PS1 years after they first came out. As a result, a lot of the games we bought were already used and a year or more old.

We've had a PS2 for about 2 years now, but I'm still playing some PS1 games. I just replayed Parasite Eve II 'cause the first time I played it, I screwed up so bad through the entire game, I couldn't beat Eve at the end. It was nice replaying it and taking her down, and getting the "happy ending".

I have Vagrant Story and Dino Crisis on hand, too. I'm thinking about playing DC next, though I don't know if I feel like something so close in nature to PEII.

I'm torn. I have BloodRayne, Primal, and Exile, the 3rd Myst title, also waiting to be played. Part of me wants to forget about the PS1 games before I've even played them, and move on to the PS2 games I have waiting. The only PS2 game I've played thusfar was Legacy Of Kain, and loved it. But it didn't make me feel like I couldn't still play PS1 games I was interested in.

I dunno.

I don't have any of the "new" generation of game consoles. Wouldn't be worth the price, for as little as I play. I still have the PS1 and a shit load of Dreamcast games. I generally had PS1 for RPGs, particularly like Final Fantasy Tactics, and Castlevania, Symphony of the Night. Dreamcast, on the other hand, is for all of my Streetfighter/fighting game needs, and I love many of the car driving games. But! But! The reason I bought the Dreamcast was not for Dreamcast games, but to run my NES emulator! So, if I am sitting around playing games, which is rare, there is a very, very good chance I am actually playing 8-Bit Nintendo games. I have a sweet disc with some 2000+ roms, and I have played the shit out of that thing.

I'm seriously thinking of getting one of those rom carts for my Gameboy so I can play all my NES roms on it. Would be worth the $100 to me, as I would seriously play the shit out of it.

There are many titles that have carried over. The good thing is that PS1 games are compatible with PS2's. Sooooo, eventually, if you felt up to it, you could get a PS2 and then have the best of both worlds. (Usually, the only requirement is that you have a PS1 memory card.)

The best game ever made did NOT get published originally for the Playstation. Nor, surprisingly enough, was it published for the old NES, may we all bow our heads in reverence.

The best game to ever cross my control pad was for the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System. I have just two words: Chrono Trigger.

Best.

Game.

Ever.

And they were smart enough to re-release it for the Playstation. Go Square.

Ginny - you missed something in my post there. I've got a PS2.

Daniel - that's pretty cool. I sold a huge lot of original Nintendo & Sega games last year, and got hooked on Sonic the Hedgehog while testing everything. They just put out a collection of all the old games last year for X-Box and I think it's out for Playstation now, too. Have to pick that up sometime.

I had wanted a Dreamcast, and got one with a bunch of games from a yard sale last year for $12.00. Ended up not keeping it, though.

I have a Nintendo 64 sitting here JUST for the purpose of playing the Xena game they made for it. Loved the one they had for Playstation, and have been wanting to play the N64 one. Got the console from a yard sale for $5.00 and found the game at a flea market a couple weekends ago for $2.00.

I just picked up a VERY cool disc for PS2 that has a lot of the old Intellivision games on it. So cool playing Snafu, Space Battle & the like again. I just wish the 2 Tron games were on it, but probably had licensing problems with Disney or something. Oh, well.

Gave Dino Crisis a shot last night, and hated it. I thought the gameplay was kinda retarded compared to Parasite Eve, though I liked the fact that there were actual character voices. PE could get pretty... lonely? should I say, all that silence except for sound effects and some music.

I think I'll go fire up that N64 so I can play that Xena game and then sell it all off.

 Sorry about that, FC. You're very correct; I did, indeed, miss that.

Shade is right. Chrono Cross is one of the best games I've seen for Playstation. However, I must throw out the Final Fantasy series as well. The first one I ever played was FF7 and I was instantly hooked on it. While the graphics are somewhat dated in today's day and age, it's still a worth while game to look into.

I found myself disinterested in the FF series because I can't stand games that require you to be/fight as more than one character.

I'm gonna give my copy of Vagrant Story a shot. If I don't like it, it's on to one of the PS2 games I've got on hand.

(The Xena game sucked. Turned out to be a Mortal Kombat-style fighter game - boring.)

I still love alot of PS1 games... mostly the Final Fantasy games or the Chrono Cross (originally for old school Nintendo)/Chrono Trigger combo. The graphics aren't as gooey, but it seems like sometimes the stories are better.

If you're not a fan of the FF series because of the combat style, you may not like Chrono Cross then because it is similar as you have a group of three people with others that you can switch out with. However, the storyline is still wonderful. Sometimes it's good to play through a game just for the story.

You might even enjoy the Devil May Cry series as it's a one character game (no group).

My ex loved the Devil May Cry series... I have no hand eye coordination so I had to passively waych him play it, but it seemed like a fun game.

I'm playing Shadow Hearts: Covenant right now. It's, again, one of those where you control multiple characters though. (And for PS2) It's a great game though... the first one is too!

Oh yeah, I have loads of PS1 games and still play them ocassionally. In my eyes, it's the best console ever, just because of the amount of creative games available. You just don't see games like Aquanaut's Holiday or Intelligent Qube anymore. I typically go back and play the original King's Field about once a year.

The last PS1 game I played was Dragon Warrior... VII? I lost count. Nice RPG that showed graphics aren't everything. But Vagrant Story is one of my favorite games of all time, both from a style and a gameplay aspect. Great story, good pace (for the most part). I played through both on my PS2, after all the newer, "better" games came out.

I also bought an N64 just for Pokemon Puzzle League. Great game.

I'm enjoying Vagrant Story for the most part.

Some things are confounding me, like why the analyze spell never seems to work. And why you can combine to make just about anything except a barbut.

And I'm sorta 50/50 on the whole "assemble weapons & armor & shields" thing. Part of me doesn't like how it stops the action, but part of me is enjoying that sort of "puzzle" aspect of the game.

And I get a little frustrated trying to make sure I've got enough of things to fight various elemental aspects of creatures. That's where I think they got a bit excessive. Could have just stuck with needing weapons/shields that had experience in the types of creatures you fight along the way and made things less confusing.

I think they did a wonderful job overall with this one, however. So my complaints don't go so deep as it might seem.

And it's the first time I've come across an animated character I SERIOUSLY have the hots for. Sydney Losstarot is enough to make me run for the darkside.

Vagrant Story does get pretty complicated. I restarted my game after realizing that using only one weapon just wouldn't work. Three weapons seemed to work well. As long as you space out what enemy type you kill with each weapon so that they're three steps away from each other, it's not too bad to build them up.

This game may have the most complex weapon/armor system ever. The replay value is insane, if you're the type that has to max out everything. I may have to find my copy and play it again, if I can find my old PS1 games.

Oh, found this in a FAQ:

1. How does Analyze work?

For those from the Final Fantasy school of thought, Vagrant Story's method of scanning an enemy's statistics is a little strange. Instead of having stats quickly scroll

across the screen after Analyzing an enemy, the battle continues, and one needs to open the Status menu and tap the R1/L1 buttons to cycle between Ashley and all the enemies in the room. You can view any given enemy's equipment without having scanned them first, using this trick, however, you won't be able to see the stats or components of their weapons and armor without using Analyze.

2. How can I improve the success rate of Analyze/Unlock?

The higher your RISK, the higher the success rate of these spells - the formula seems to be +1% success for every 2 points of RISK. Conversely, higher RISK will increase the damage Warlock spells inflict, but decrease the chances of said spells hitting.
