FERNDALE, Mich. (AP) — High winds toppled a flagpole in an interior courtyard at an elementary school Monday, striking and killing a 5-year-old kindergartner during recess, school officials said.

The accident happened about 1 p.m. at Roosevelt Primary School in the Ferndale School District in Detroit's northern suburbs. The school has about 370 students in kindergarten through third grade.

No others were hurt, said district spokeswoman Stephanie Hall. About 15 other children were in the courtyard at the time, and they were escorted into the building while the principal and a teacher comforted the girl.
